Now, back to our story ...

Glenn’s POV –
After a few hours, Rick had managed to organize everyone into groups – scouring the prison, looking for walkers and any additional threats. With the fence secured, now the building itself had to be surveyed for damage. Luckily, the prison was mostly stucco, stone, and brick, so the fire eventually died out; only smoke remained from the smoldering ashes. The explosions had actually collapsed the back part of the prison; blocking off the opening that was once there. Tyrese had come out earlier to tell me how sorry he was about Maggie, and told me that the fence and prison was secured. I thanked him for the update, but at that moment I really didn’t care. All I could think about was Maggie. It had only been a few hours, but it felt like a millennium.

I waited outside sitting on one of the tables, going what happened over and over again in my head. The anxiety was overwhelming; I couldn’t wait to figure out what the hell we were going to do.

We needed to get Maggie and Beth back as soon as possible; I wanted her back in my arms today!

There was still several hours of daylight, so I figured we’d work out a plan and head out. Carol found me and told me that The Council was having a meeting inside and that I should come in. I followed her into the library where I could see everyone was there; they all sat there in silence. Everyone just stared back at me; they all had the same sympathetic look on their face. Everyone except for Daryl, who sat up on top of a table in the corner of the room, his legs crossed, sharpening a knife. He moved the steel blade back and forth on a rock; the sound of it sliced through the deafening silence of the room.

“Go ahead and have a seat, Glenn.” Rick motioned to one of the seats at the table.

I just nodded and took a seat across from Hershel; his eyes looked blood shot and the rims were red. I could tell he had been crying too. I had been so consumed with my own anger and grief; I just realized that Hershel had lost both his daughters to this attack.

“Hershel … I’m sorry. So, sorry.”

I hung my head low; I felt like I had failed Maggie. I had failed Beth. I had failed Hershel and the promise I had made to him to protect his daughter.

“It’s gonna be okay, Glenn. We’re gonna the girls back. Don’t you worry. Isn’t that right, Rick?”

He turned to Rick waiting for a response.

“Listen … we’re all sorry that this happened. He paused and looked around. “And, we are going
to get the girls back. I want you to all know that; this ain’t over for us.”

Rick seemed so confident; however, as I looked around the room at everyone’s faces; they all looked so defeated. Except for Daryl; he just looked like he was about to explode. Rick had held him back earlier from running after them boys, and I think he was still fuming about not going after them right away. I knew Daryl would be on the same page as me; we needed to get them back … and soon!

Not a moment later Daryl chimed in; angry as all hell.

“I’m gonna head out in an hour. Anyone that wants to come with me can, but I ain’t waitin’ around for y’all … I’m goin’ after them. And, ain’t a one of you gonna stop me.”

He glared at Rick.

“Listen, Daryl. We all want the girls back, but we can’t go off half-cocked without some sort of a plan. We don’t even know for sure who did this.”

“Are you fuckin’ kiddin’ me? You know it was him. Who else would do this to us?”

Daryl jumped down off the table; he held the blade held tight in his right hand by his side.

“We don’t know that for sure, Daryl.”

Rick tried to calm Daryl down, but he wasn’t having any of it.

“You’re gonna try and tell me that some other group came in here and kidnapped Maggie and Beth? You must be outta your fuckin’ mind. It was him – The Governor! That sick fuck has our girls, and God only knows what he’s doin’ to em. You all know what happened at Woodbury. I ain’t gotta spell it out for ya. I’m not gonna let Beth spend one night there.”

“Where, Daryl? Spend the night where?”

Daryl looked back at Rick angrily.

“Dunno. Guess I’ll have to track em.”

“Uh huh … track em. You don’t know how far and what kind of resources he has now. It might not be as easy as sneakin’ into some half guarded town like last time. Maybe it will, but I doubt that will be the case this time.”

“Don’t care, Rick. I’m not gonna let Beth get …”

Daryl started to break down; he couldn’t even get the words out of his mouth. He didn’t have to; we were all thinking the same thing. He had kidnapped two of our women, and we already knew he was a rapist. Daryl didn’t want that to happen to Beth … and, I didn’t blame him. It was a horrible feeling to know that the woman you love has been violated like that and you weren’t there to stop it from happening.

He pinched the bridge of his nose to catch some of the tears before they could fall down his cheeks.

“I’m not gonna let him touch her.”

“We all know what happened at Woodbury and none of us want that to happen again. Not to Maggie or to Beth. We’re gonna get em back … okay?”

I jumped up and walked over to Daryl’s side.

“I’m with Daryl. I say we go today, tonight, whatever. But, it’s got to be soon. There’s no tellin’ how long we have before he does something to them.”

“Well, I gotta believe that if he wanted them dead; they’d be dead. I don’t think that’s why he took them. If it is The Governor were talkin’ bout; I think he took them … so we’d go after them.” He paused and looked around.

Hershel looked up from the table; he was barely holding it together.

“If it was The Governor and he wants us to go after them …what does that mean? What does he want?”

“Well, most likely … it’s a trap. A trap to get us to leave the security of the prison walls and get us out in the open. It’s a pretty simple and effective military tactic. Once we’re out in the open; he’ll employ whatever means he has … to kill us.”

“And, then what? If his goal is to kill us, then what about the girls? Will he just kill them too?” I replied.

The concern and worry Rick was feeling was written all over his face.

“I’m not sure bout that. I don’t think he’s planning on killin’ them. Why would he?”

“What are you sayin’ Rick?” Carol looked over at Rick. “What would he want with Maggie and

“He’s obviously been watching us; he’s planned this for a while ... I think we can all agree on that." He paused and looked over at me. "And, he waited until Maggie and Beth were beyond the main gates before storming in, so I don’t think this was the spur of the moment. It’s calculated.”

Rick put both his arms up; his hands cupping the back of his head.

“Damn!” He exhaled deeply. “Is it possible? … Is it possible he might suspect … ya know?”

Rick turned to me; his hands fell to his hips as he waited for my response.

“Suspect what?”

“About Maggie … and the baby. If he’s been watchin’ us … maybe he suspects the baby … is his?”

“No! No way! How would he know anyways?”

I looked back angrily at Rick for even suggesting it.

“Well, I think it might be a possibility.” Rick’s head hung low and he looked at the ground when he continued. “I think we gotta consider the possibility that he knows somehow.”

Daryl became enraged and shouted out, “Fuck this shit! Whether he knows or doesn’t know … what difference does that make, Rick!”

“It makes a difference because if he believes the baby is his; then we’ve got some time. He’s not gonna hurt Maggie if he thinks she’s pregnant with his child.”

Jesus Christ!” I just could believe what was going on.

“How could this be happening?”
I kept thinking to myself.

“And, what about Beth? What about her? She ain’t pregnant with his child. What’s he gonna do with her?”

Daryl seemed to be growing more and more agitated by the minute.

“Don’t know Daryl.”

“Yeah, well ‘don’t know’ doesn’t work for me. Beth’s on her own with him …”

Daryl started to cry, he whimpered through his words.

“What about Beth … and our baby? What’s gonna happened to them” He continued to cry.

Carol shot up from her chair. “Jesus Christ, Daryl! Beth is pregnant!”

Daryl didn’t respond, but Hershel did.

“She is, Carol. I confirmed it. She’s about 3 months along now.”

Rick now understood how dire the situation was. Both of the girls were pregnant and not in any condition to be hostages of that madman.

“Oh my God …” He scratched the back of his head. “I didn’t know. I'm ... I’m sorry, Daryl.”

“I ain’t gonna let nothin’ happen to my family. I’m not gonna lose them too.”

“I’ll go with you, Daryl.” I looked up at Daryl letting him know I was down for whatever he had planned. “I’m not gonna let anything happen to Maggie; not after what happened last time.”

A voice we hadn’t heard from chimed in from the back of the room; Michonne walked in from the shadows where she’d been listening to us.

“Ya can’t leave. Not now.”

Daryl responded harshly to her.

“What? Ya ain’t gonna help us rescue Maggie and Beth?”

“Of course I will. You just can’t leave now.”

”An why the hell not?”

“Because … Rick was right … it is a trap.”

Daryl sheathed his knife and walked over to Michonne and stood just about a foot away from her.

“An how the hell do you know that?”

“Cause … I caught one of their wounded men in the woods behind the prison, while I was checking the perimeter. He hadn’t gotten far. He said he was trying to make his way back to a rendezvous point …didn’t tell me where that was, but he did tell me that there’s others out there still. They're waitin’ for us to come out ...” Michonne looked around. “You can ask him yourself if you want to … I got him tied up; brought him back here.”

“Why the hell didn’t you say somethin’ earlier?!!”

Daryl basically yelled in her face, but she just closed her eyes and took it. She understood Daryl was upset; he didn’t mean anything by it.

“I just got back. First think I did, was come up her to tell y'all about it."

“Well, where the hell is he?” Daryl fumed.

“Cell Black A – Death Row.”

Daryl stormed out of the room, and I followed closely behind him.

“He’s wounded pretty bad …” Michonne yelled out to us.

I could hear Rick yelling to us as he followed behind us.

“Daryl! Glenn! Don’t do anything stupid!”

“Oh, I ain’t gonna do anything stupid. No, I’m gonna fuckin’ kill him!”

“Now, Daryl. I know you’re hurting; we all are. But, ya can’t just kill this guy!”

Rick ran up and grabbed Daryl by the shoulder and spun him around. Daryl took a swing at him and Rick ducked; the punch narrowly missed him.

“Stop! Just stop it!” Rick tried to calm Daryl down. “This guy is with the group that took the girls … and, we need information. We need to keep this guy alive so he can talk and tell us what we need to know.”

Daryl was enraged; he tightened his jaw and nodded his head - he understood. He didn't like it, but he understood.

“Okay? We need him to talk. We can’t just kill him.”

I didn't blame Daryl - I wanted to kill him too; for being a part of that sick fuck’s group, for being a part of something that caused me to lose Maggie. But, Rick was right. We needed a plan, and to get that ... we'd need information that only this guy could give us.

“Alright, Rick. So what should we do?” I finally asked Rick.

“Let’s get in there and see what information he has to give, and go from there.”

Michonne finally caught up with us.

“That’s why I brought him back; I knew he would be helpful … maybe give us some more information." She paused and looked at Rick. "Might take some convincing though”

Rick looked over at her; he looked concerned.

“How the hell did you get him to tell you all that stuff, anyways?”

“Just with a little prodding.” Michonne gave a slight smile. “Like I said, he’s wounded. He’s in a lot of pain … didn’t take too much to get him to talk.”

Rick gave Michonne a disapproving look; he obviously didn’t like Michonne’s methods of getting information, but she didn’t seem to care at the moment.

Michonne nodded for us to enter into Cell Black A.

“Go ahead, you’ll see.”

Daryl jaw tightened and his eyes lowered as he reached for the knob and opened the door and we all walked in. Immediately we heard the whimpers of the man Michonne had brought back; they echoed throughout the empty cell block.

“Is anyone there?” He called out.

Daryl growled. “Yeah … someone’s here, motherfucker.”

The door slammed behind us.

“You said he’s wounded, Michonne. What’s wrong?” Rick whispered to Michonne.

“Gun shot.”

Daryl took off towards the cell and he arrived there first. As we approached, I heard Daryl say under his breath, “Ahh, shit!”

His comment and the look on his face told me that this guy was a little more than wounded – he was dying.

I walked beside Daryl and peered in. The man appeared to be in his late forties or early fifties and he had a gun shot wound to his abdomen and his blood had soaked through the cot and was now was blood pooling below him on the floor.

Michonne turned to Rick.

“He ain’t got long, so y’all should get what you can from him now. He won’t make it through the night.”

Rick lowered his head into his hand and rubbed his face.

“Alright. Can you please go get Hershel and bring him down here? I want him to come take a look at this guy. Maybe we can keep him alive a little longer.”

Michonne nodded and walked out of the cell block.

“Hershel.” Rick leaned in close to him and continued. “I need ya to keep him alive as long as you can. We need him to talk, so do what you can while you’re in there.”

Hershel nodded and entered the cell. Daryl and I stayed close to the barred door, keeping guard and listening to the conversation.

“Hello ... My name is Hershel. I’m gonna take a look at that wound you have there, if ya don’t mind.”

The man nodded. “Okay.”

Hershel sat down next to the cot.

“What’s your name, son?”

“Ow!” He grimaced as Hershel began lifting the cloth that had been placed over the wound; now soaked with blood.

“Name’s Greg. Greg Nicotero.”

Hershel examined the wound. “Alright, Greg. Do you think you can lean over a bit?”

Greg nodded and leaned to the side. Hershel took a moment and then told him to lie back down.
Hershel gave him a small reassuring smile.

“Well, Greg. Looks like the bullet went straight through ya … won’t be needing to fish any bullets out of ya.”

“Is that good?” Greg looked up eagerly at Hershel.

Hershel nodded yes.

“Go ahead and lean over to the side again for me. I’m gonna clean the exit wound and bandage ya up.”

As Hershel began to clean the wound, he began to try and talk with the man. Daryl and I looked at each other; both of us were hopeful that this guy could give us some information that would be helpful.

“So, ya mind tellin’ me what you and your men were doin’ here today?”

Greg looked back and remained silent.

“You know … those were my daughters your men took.”

The man seemed empathetic for a moment, but he still didn’t respond. I could see the lack of communication between Hershel and this guy Nick was getting Daryl all revved up; ready to burst into the room at any moment.

“It was a rescue mission.”

“Rescue Mission? For who?”

“The Governor.”

The Governor! M heart sank and I closed my eyes. My worst nightmare had come true. He was back, and he had Maggie again ...

I looked over at Daryl he was leaning against the wall with his head tilted back resting on the cement behind him. Even from where I stood, I could see his eyes glossy and blood shot.

Rick must've noticed how disturbed Daryl was and walked over to him.

“Calm down, Daryl. Just let Hershel talk to him. The man’s probably not gonna live through the night, maybe he’ll come to reason with him.”

Daryl grunted; obviously unsatisfied with Rick’s answer. And, all I could think about what was happening with Maggie right now. Where she was right now, if she was okay, if he had hurt her … it was driving me crazy.

I started to pace back and forth down the hall as I realized – this whole thing had been planned. God knows how long he’d been planning it, but I had failed to protect Maggie, again. I started to feel completely overwhelmed. I didn’t think I had any more tears left in me, but to my surprise I did. I found the tears just leaked out and streamed down my cheek.

I looked over at Daryl again; he looked to be deep in his thoughts - he was completely stone cold. I could tell he was just waiting for his chance to wring this guy’s neck.

But, we both just waited and continued to listen to see what this Greg guy had to say to Hershel.

“He told us all about it, ya know?” The man became angrier as he continued. “I know what you all did. Destroyin’ the town, takin’ the rest of the survivors here. Don’t think I don’t what y’all did – cause I do.”

“And, what exactly is that, son?”

The man’s face contorted in pain.

“Been keepin’ those women and children prisoners here. He told us all about it.”

“Now listen here. The madman you call The Governor is not who he seems to be, trust me.”

“Ha! … why would I trust you? I’ve been with the group for 6 months now and he’s been a strong leader; never seen him do anything but help our group survive.”

“I’m tellin’ ya, he ain’t what he seems.”

Greg shrugged his shoulders; indifferent to Hershel’s comments.

“Now listen here, son. There are no prisoners here. Just peaceful people attempting to make a life.”

“Sure. Like I’d believe a word you have to say.”

“That man you’ve been following is the one who killed all those people from Woodbury; not us! He killed them all in cold blood. And, we didn't capture those people, we saved them and brought them back here and have been takin' care of them ever since. You don’t know the half of it, son. This ain’t what it seems, this is a war. And, you don’t even know who you’re fighting for.”

Hershel stopped bandaging the man and stood up.

“I can’t help you, son. I just can’t. That lunatic kidnapped both my daughters …my pregnant daughters. I can't help ... not unless you tell me why!”

Hershel paused and waited for a response that never came. He stared at the dying man and continued.

“I can’t do this anymore.” And, he began to walk out of the cell, when finally then man yelled out.

Hershel abruptly replied.

“What?” He turned around. “What do you mean hostages?” Hershel walked a little further back into the cell. “For what purpose?”

“I can’t tell you that, old man. I’m sorry.”

Hershel’s jaw tightened; his body tensed as he turned to leave.

“Well, I’m sorry too … if you can’t help me find my daughters; I can’t help you. Sorry, but I can’t do it.”

Rick tried to stop Hershel from leaving the cell.

“Hershel, we need more information. Please.

“Rick, I cannot save this man’s life knowing he’s responsible for my daughter’s kidnapping. I can’t do it. Not unless he gives us some information we can use.”

Hershel and Rick were talking still within ear shot; Greg must have heard their conversation.

He called out to Hershel.

“He’s gonna offer you an exchange! Your girls for the prisoners from Woodbury.”

Rick walked passed Hershel into the cell and sat beside the man. He leaned down close and grabbed a hold of the collar of his shirt.

“We need more information than that. What can you tell us about The Governor? Where has he taken the girls?”

Greg squirmed on the cot; the movement was causing him quite a bit of pain.

“I can’t tell you that. I’m not really sure where he took em.”

Daryl couldn’t take another second; he ran into the room. He stormed in the room and pushed Rick to the side; throwing him into the wall. He jumped on the cot and began to punch Greg in the face. I ran as fast as I could and quickly helped Rick pull him off the guy.

Rick and I continued to hold Daryl back as he screamed at the man.

“That’s a lie. I don’t believe you for a second. Where the hell did he take em?”

Rick looked over at me.

“Get Daryl outta here, Glenn!”

Daryl started to squirm and tried to lunge for the man again.

“No! Not til this piece of shit tells me where he took my girl.”

“This ain’t helping. Get him outta here!”

I pulled Daryl outside; not just because Rick asked me to, but because I wanted to talk to him by myself.

“Hey, Daryl … calm down.”

Daryl shot me a look; his eyes bored through mine.

“What the hell, Glenn?”

“Well, now we know … we know that psycho’s got Maggie and Beth. Question is … what’re we gonna do about it.”

Daryl looked at me confused and then he responded angrily. “What? You don’t want to wait around and see what Rick has planned?”

“No … I don’t. I’m with you on this. I wanna get Maggie and Beth back tonight if we can.”

Daryl seemed to calm down a little. “Good … glad to know we’re on the same page.”

“Of course we are.”

“Might take some persuasion to get this guy to talk. Ya alright with that?”

I knew what he meant.

“Yes. I am. I’ll do whatever it takes.”

He tightened his mouth and nodded his head. “Good.”

Rick walked out of the room.

“I think that’s all were gonna get from him for right now.”

“That’s not good enough, Rick. I wanna talk to him.”

Rick looked worried.

“You sure bout that?”

Daryl nodded.

“Careful, Daryl.” Rick then turned to me. “Glenn … there are some things that you cannot come back from. Just know that going in.”

Rick patted me on the shoulder; his eyes told me he knew we were about to possibly cross a line, a line we had done our best not to ever cross before. Unfortunately for this guy, the ‘humane’ thing was out of the question right now. We needed information, and we needed it now.

Daryl and I gave each other a knowing glance, as Hershel walked out of the cell. He motioned for us to walk away from the cell door.

“Hershel?” Rick paused and waited for his response.

Hershel exhaled deeply. “Looks like this gunshot may have hit an organ, so there’s internal bleeding. He’s lost a lot of blood and his blood pressure has dropped, significantly.”

Hershel looked at me and Daryl; he looked really worried. Then, he turned back to Rick.

“He doesn’t have much time ... Two maybe three hours if we’re lucky.”

Rick put his hands on his hips as he thought about what to do next.

“Can you stabilize him?”

“I did everything I could, Rick. The wound is just too big and he’s lost too much blood.” Hershel then turned to me and Daryl. “Get what you can from him boys. You ain’t got much time.”

Daryl nodded and slung his crossbow over his shoulder and walked back towards the cell. I followed behind him. Daryl turned around and looked at me.

“You sure you’re ready for this?”

“Yeah. Like I said, whatever it takes.”

Looks like Glenn and Daryl are going to do whatever it takes to get their girls back. Should be interesting to see how far they are going to have to go, and if they will be able to come back from all of that …

So, let me know what you think; like it, love it, hate it ... let me know your thoughts. If you've got a moment, please leave me a note or comment on your way out ... I'd love to hear from you all :-D

This story is amazing! I love the way you're having The Governor be more like he was in the comics... poor Maggie! I also like that while this is mainly about Maggie and The Governor, you've put some Bethyl in there. Can't wait for the next chapter!
