Although, we didn't hit the review challenge of 5 reviews before posting the next ... I had chapter nineteen finished, so I figured I'd just get it up instead of waiting ;)
Note: This chapter has a "guest character"; The Walking Dead's Executive Producer/Special Effects Make Up Designer, Greg Nicotero ;)
Now, back to our story ...
Daryl’s POV –
Hershel looked at me and Glenn; he looked really worried. Then, he turned back to Rick.
“He doesn’t have much time. Two maybe three hours if we’re lucky.”
“Jesus!” Rick put his hands on his hips as he thought about what to do next.
“Can you stabilize him?”
“I did everything I could, Rick. The wound is just too big and he’s lost too much blood.” Hershel turned to me and Glenn. “Get what you can from him boys. You ain’t got much time.”
I nodded; I knew what had to be done. I slung my crossbow over my shoulder and walked back towards the cell. Glenn followed close behind me. I turned around and looked at Glenn; I wasn’t sure if he had the stomach for all this.
“You sure you’re ready for this?”
“Yeah. Like I said, whatever it takes.”
As we approached the cell, I could here the guy coughing; sounded like he was hurt real bad. I didn’t think it would take much, but I was prepared to take it as far as I needed to if it would save
“Knock, knock.” I tapped on the side of the cell.
Greg’s eyes widened. “What the hell do you want? Where’s Hershel?”
“Hershel will be back in a bit. Until then, you and me need to have a little talk.”
I looked back and saw Glenn standing near the cell door. He nodded, letting me know that I was clear to go to work.
“Listen, man. I ain’t sayin’ another word. Not til Hershel gets back.”
“Well, he ain’t gonna be back for a while.”
“Listen, I am not gonna say shit. Not until that doctor of yours helps me.”“You think he’s gonna help you? You are your men are responsible for takin’ his daughter. He ain’t gonna help you?”
“Well, he better. Cause if he don’t, I’m not gonna tell you what you came in here for.”
I looked back at Glenn. Obviously this guy thought he had a card to play here with us. Medical help for information. What he didn’t know was that Hershel said there was nothin’ more that could be done.
“We need to know where The Governor took Maggie and Beth.” Glenn called out.
Greg looked over at him and laughed. “Like I said … not another word til Hershel patches me up.”
This son of a bitch was really on my last nerves.
“I didn’t want to have to hurt ya man, but I will. He’s got my girl, and I ain’t gonna let him hurt her.”
He really shouldn’t have said that …
Before I knew it, I was on next to the guy. I grabbed him by the collar and pulled his head up off the cot and slammed my fist into his face a half dozen times.
“You piece of shit! You tell me where they took em! You tell me now!”
I could feel Glenn pull me off the guy. Glenn threw me into the wall and I stumbled as I lost my footing and almost fell to the ground.
“What the hell, Glenn?!”
Greg laughed. “Ha! Is that all ya got redneck? Gonna take more than that to scare me. Now get me Hershel!”
He coughed and spit to the side of his cot; blood covered the inside of his mouth. I knew I had
clipped him real good a few times.
“We’re just gettin’ started here…” I cracked my knuckles and walked back over to him.
“If I die, you’ll never know where he took your girls … never!.”
“I ain’t gonna kill ya …”
I pulled out my knife from its sheath. “I’m just gonna hurt ya real bad.”
I waved the knife in front of his face. I wanted him to know I was serious.
“Like I said … Fuck off!”
He spit in my face. I wiped off the blood and saliva with the back of my hand.
“You’re gonna wish ya hadn’t done that …”
I grabbed a hold of his hair and pulled his face to the side. I got a firm hold on his ear and slipped my knife underneath; taking off his ear in one swipe.
Guess I was startin’ another ear collection …
He screamed in pain. I walked over to the tray of medical supplies Hershel had brought down, and grabbed a few of the clean bandages and threw them to the man.
“Here … put this gauze there. It’ll stop the bleedin’.”
“You bastard. Your sick! You cut my ear off!” He yelped as he quickly tried to bandage his now bleeding patch of skin where his ear was.
“I told ya I wasn’t fuckin’ around.”
I grabbed his ear and held it up and showed it to him.
“Now, if ya don’t start talkin’ … I’m gonna take the other one too.”
I stood up and set his ear on the table, far enough to the edge so that he could still see it.
“Now, I’m not gonna say another fuckin’ word. Even if Hershel patches me up, you’ll be lucky if I tell ya.”
I can’t believe this fucker ain’t talking yet!
I don’t have time for this!
Then, the guy said somethin’ … he really shouldn’t have …
“Bet your girl’s havin’ a good ole time by now.” He smiled. “Bet the boys already takin’ turns on her.”
I jumped on top of him and sat on his chest and started wailing on him. I completely lost it.
Boys takin’ turns on her …
Havin’ a good ole time …
Those were the only words that were echoing through my head.
I didn’t know what happened. Next thing I knew Glenn and Rick had pulled me off of him, but I was still swingin’. I screamed at him as they tried to pull me into the hallway.
“You’re dead! You’re a dead man; ya just don’t know it yet!”
Glenn shook me while he yelled, “Shut up Daryl”
“You’re a dead man. Got hours to live. Better start talkin’ if ya know what’s good for ya!”
As they were tryin’ to drag me out, I caught a hold of the cell doors and wiggled loose … and my fists immediately found their way back to this guy’s face.
“You stupid, piece of shit! Ain’t nothin’ can help ya now, boy.”
Again. And, again. And, again. Until my hand was swollen. Glenn and Rick were finally able to pull me off of him again.
“Jesus Christ, Daryl.” Rick grabbed me and threw me into the wall outside the cell. “He’s unconscious now. Ya ain’t gonna much information from him now are ya?”
“Get off me, Rick! You don’t know nothin’ bout all this.” I started to pace. I looked inside and I could see I had bloodied the man’s face and he wasn’t movin’ anymore. “Ya don’t what were up against. What the girls are up against. If it was Lori or if Judith was older … you’d be right in there with me.”
“No …I wouldn’t.” Rick took a deep breath. “I know you’re upset right now, but we gotta think with our heads.
“Think with our heads, huh?” I got right in Rick’s face. “Well, you just stay outta my way. I’m gonna do this my way.”
I started to walk back in, when Glenn pulled me to the side. He looked worried. I could tell he didn’t have the stomach for this shit. And, sure as hell … I was right.
“Maybe Rick’s right. Maybe we should try another tactic.”
“Another tactic, huh?” I stared Glenn down. “An what d’ya think you’re gonna be able to get outta him?”
“Just give me a few minutes. Then, if he still doesn’t talk. Then, you can start cuttin’ off body parts again.” He looked at me with fierceness in his eyes; I could tell he wanted his shot at this guy. “Alright?!”
“Alright, alright.” I put my hands in the air. “Well, try it your way … for a few minutes.”
Glenn’s POV –
“Rick, get Hershel. Bring him back here. Tell him we need to get this guy awake again.”
Rick ran out and grabbed Hershel, who’d been waiting outside Cell Block A. Guess he hadn’t
wanted to hear what we had in store for this guy.
“Hershel. You got anything to get him awake?”
“I got some smelling salts. Might do the trick.”
Hershel walked into the cell.
“Dear God … Daryl did a number on him didn’t he?”
Hershel walked over and sat next to the cot. Within a few moments, Greg was awake. He wasn’t fully with it, but he was conscious. He was moaning in pain, and for a moment I felt bad for the guy. But, just for a moment. Then, I thought of Maggie and I knew I needed to get some information from this guy before he died. I needed him to understand.
I yelled to Rick.
“Rick? Can you please keep Daryl out of the cell? Keep him in the hallway.”
“Ohhh … I’m in a lot of pain. Please, please help me …” Greg moaned.
“I can help with that, son.” Hershel reached into his bag; he had some morphine. “I’m only gonna give ya a little. Don’t want ya noddin’ off on us. We still need to talk to ya Greg, okay?”
Hershel gave Greg the morphine and he seemed to stop moaning as much.
“So … I’m gonna die?”
Hershel looked over at me, and I nodded; Daryl had spilled the beans during his interrogation.
“I’m sorry, son. Yes. There’s nothin’ I can do for you … except ease your pain. I’m sorry.”
Greg laughed, which made him go into a coughing fit. He coughed up blood.
“Guess that’s not a good sign, huh?”
“No, no it’s not …” Hershel looked down at the injured man.
I could tell he had pity on him, but he still had a lot of anger in his face.
“We’re gonna need ya tell us where they took my daughters.”
“I am sorry about your girls, Hershel. But, if I’m gonna die anyways … why would I tell you anything?’
“My daughter’s lives depend on it. I’m countin’ on you to do the right thing here.”
Hershel looked up at me with tears in his eyes.
“Let me Hershel. Let me talk to him.”
“What? You’re gonna bash my head in now? Maybe cut my other ear off?”
“No. I’m just gonna tell you what’s really going on here.”
“And, what’s that?”
He coughed again; more blood found it’s way to his shirt and onto the sheets wrapped around him.
“The man you know as The Governor, he’s not what he says he is.”
I continued to tell him the story of our interactions with The Governor, about how he almost killed me, how he raped Maggie, how he killed all of the people that went with him to attack the prison and then disappeared.
“We found one of the survivors of his massacre, Karen. She told us what had happened. When we heard, we went back to Woodbury looking for The Governor … but, when we got there … all we found were the few townsfolk that had been left behind. Mostly children and the elderly. We’ve been lookin’ after them ever since.”
Greg seemed to be listening, but then his eyelids appeared to become heavy and his eyes started to flutter.
His eyes snapped open and he answered. “Huh? What …?”
“Stay with me, Greg.”
“I am … I heard ya.”
Hershel chimed in again. “Please, Greg. Please, tell us where we can find my girls.”
“Jesus, man …” He paused. “I don’t know …. This all sounds pretty crazy.”
“He raped my wife, she’s nine months pregnant, and now he’s kidnapped her … again! God only knows what he’s gonna do to her. Or, what he’ll do to Beth.” I started to tear up. “She’s got a little one on the way too.”
“Sorry, man ..”
Greg coughed again … more blood. He moaned in pain, grabbing at his gunshot wound.
“You know … I don’t feel that much pain anymore.”
Hershel looked over at me with fear in his eyes. Only meant one thing; Greg didn’t have long.
“Listen, this whole thing. This whole mission of yours … was for revenge. Revenge for his failed attack, revenge for all of his failures, his insanity.” I paused and looked at him. “I don’t think you’re a bad guy, but what you’re a part of …is pure evil.”
Greg just stared back; I couldn’t tell if I had gotten through to him.
“He’s been talkin’ about a new life. Startin’ over. Rebuilding civilization.” He coughed and continued. “Said the people here were prisoners, said we were gonna rescue them and bring em back. Rebuild life.”
He looked over at Hershel.
“He took your girls … home. To our base.”
“And, where’s that, son?”
“But, it was overrun.”
“It was overrun. Til we cleared it.”
“How’s that possible?”
“We cleared it months ago. Been barricading a portion of the fort, building … it’s secure. You’ll never get in.”
“How many of you are there?” Hershel asked.
“A lot. A couple hundred men.”
“Yes. He wouldn’t let us integrate women or children. Not until the Fort was ready. Not until we rescued the people here.”
Daryl walked in. “What the hell?”
“Jesus, man. Keep him away from me.”
“I ain’t gonna hurt ya. Like I said before, I just wanted to know where they took my girl. She’s pregnant and I want to get her back as soon as possible.” Daryl paced in the cell. “Didn’t have to go like that, man.”
“Sorry bout what I said about your girl.” He coughed up more blood. “I’m sorry I said that. It wasn’t right. I ain’t like that, man … And, most of the guys in the group aren’t like that. Most are good men. We didn’t know what was really goin’ on here. We thought we were tryin’ to save some people … not this …”
“You said there were a couple hundred men. What kind of arms do you have there?”
“It’s an Army Fort. It’s got everything you can imagine it would have. Artillery. Guns. Ammo. Weapons and gear to arm several thousand troops. And, we’ve spent months fortifying the walls. Ya ain’t gettin’ in … not unless you’re in shackles. Sorry ...”
“Jesus!” I was devastated to hear this news. I shook my head and put my face in my hands.
Hershel reached over and checked on his wounds.
“Is there anything else you can tell us, Greg? Anythin’ that could help?”
“There’s guard watches on the walls and towers. 24 hours a day. Got watches inside the Fort and even some planted outside; look outs on all of the roads that lead to the Fort.”
Daryl chewed on the skin around his thumb; I could tell he was anxious.
“Daryl. That might be our in … the guards outside. What do you think?”
“I don’t man … I got think bout it.”
Greg started to cough a lot; he looked like he was faded fast.
“I’m sorry bout all this, Hershel.” He coughed and grabbed a hold of Hershel’s arm. “Don’t let me turn into one of those things. Please. Don’t let me get back up after I die.”
I looked him in the eyes. “Don’t worry … you won’t become one of them. Promise.”
Greg looked up at all of his and we could hear the blood gurgling in his throat. After a few minutes, Hershel reached over and felt his neck.
“No pulse. He’s gone.”
Hershel stood up and walked away.
I walked over to the beaten and bloodied man that laid motionless below me.
I reached behind me and unsheathed my knife. I brought the knife to his head, and made a quick swipe of the blade … taking his other ear off.
“Glenn! What are you doin’, son?”
“It’s a reminder. He’s got Maggie and I need to stay focused.”
I then plundged my knife deep into Greg’s brain.
“I have a feeling … this ain’t gonna be the only one either, Hershel. I think we’re gonna be in for the fight of our lives … and I gotta get ready. I wasn’t ready. But, I need to be.”
“You did just fine, Glenn. You got the information we needed.”
“Yeah. But, that’s after Daryl did what needed to be done.” I looked over at Hershel; I could tell he was appalled. “I won’t make that mistake again.”
“Be careful son … Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.” Hershel paused. “And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
“I don’t have the luxury of worry bout that right now, Hershel. I’ll worry about it …after I get Maggie back.”
END CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Looks like Glenn and Daryl did what it took to get what they needed from Greg ... However, I want to know, do you think they were tough enough on him?
In future chapters, do you all want more gore or was this an adequate amount of gore and torture ... let me know, since there will be more scenes in chapters to come where Glenn/Daryl/The Govna/etc will have torture/gore scenes ... so, I'd like to get your feedback before writing ;)
Also, if you liked the quote: "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.” Hershel paused. “And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you." It's by Friedrich Nietzsche ... I love that quote; it feels so appropriate when you think about the things that a person would see, encounter or be forced to do on TWD or in a Zombie Apocalypse.
Anyways, I like it ... thought you all might too :))
So, let me know what you think of the chapter; like it, love it, hate it ... let me know your thoughts. If you've got a moment, please leave me a note or comment on your way out ... I'd love to hear from you all :-D
