Hearts of the Past and Present

Hayden and Olly

Bright red balls of light flew out of the top of the flare. They shot up in the sky before exploding into more red.

The black above me was now streaked with colour, catching the attention of anyone close by.

The flare cases the walkers to growl and splutter, they were intrigued by it meaning any other walker near by would be too. I could have just made the biggest mistake.

Walkers could not climb trees, just the one with all four working limbs managed the first branch but soon fell on top of the other three. They weren't giving up any time too.

The flare finished and I threw it down at them, bouncing off one if their heads.

In attempt to keep myself warm, I rubbed my hands together and blew into them, my breath hot and moist but it soon chilled by the winter air.

"Come on Daryl," I said impatiently.

My teeth began to involuntary chatter and my legs shake. There was no way I could sleep here!

"Daryl!" I shouted, hopefully calling him in the right direction.. if he was even coming.

I slowed and lowered my breath to stay quiet, I blocked out the walkers below and listened.

Was that footsteps on the forest ground? Running footsteps? Walkers footsteps were more uneven and a drag, these were separate and strong steps.

"Daryl, help me!" I shouted. "There's walkers, I'm out of ammo!"

Suddenly a dark figure burst through the bush, my heart began to race. He took a second to look up at me helpless in the tree, the shade of his hood hid his face.

The shadow of a man charged towards the small group of walkers, he knocked them all to the ground. Taking the chance, he stamped down hard on the head of one of them while the other three dragged themselves to their feet.

"Look out!" I screamed as a walker lunged at him.

But before it could take a bite, another man emerged from the bush and through a knife at the head of the walker, it fell to the ground.

With the strong action of through the knife, the second man's hood fell back to reveal ear length blonde hair on a guy, it wasn't Daryl.

"Thanks Hayden," he said although he was very out of breath, but still managed to stab another in the forehead.

"I've got ya back bro," he replied just as winded and thrusted another, larger knife up under the chin of the last walker.

Now with no threat, my two saviours keeled over. The one who came second collapsed onto the floor, while the other supported himself by placing his hands on his knees.

I hastily untied myself from my security rope and climbed down the branches to meet my heroes. I practically jumped from branch to branch till I was a meter away from solid ground. I jumped of and landed bent kneed onto the head of a walker, my heel caving in the forehead.

"Thank you so much, you guys saved my life." I exclaimed, but the two continued to gasp for breath. "Are you okay?"

I placed my hand on the shoulder of the closest boy, the one who appeared first. He looked up and nodded unconvincingly.

He was young, late teens possibly early twenties. Like the other guy he had long blonde hair, but not as long. His cheek bones were sticking out in a sickening way, his face was skinny, pale and the outline of his lips were blue.

"I'm Lily, what's your name?" I kept my hand comfortingly on his shoulder. "Olly,"

He didn't say anything else, he didn't give me time to reply as he pointed to my other rescuer on the floor, I hurried to his side.

"Are you okay? What's the matter?"

His eyes were barely open, they had deep purple rings underneath them; he clearly hadn't slept for days. Just like Olly his face was pale and thin, but more so and he seemed older. I could see the resemblance even though they were ill, they were brothers. Like his, I'm guessing little brother's, his lips too were blue.

"When was the last time you guys ate?" I asked worriedly.

I turned to Olly who just shrugged.

"I've got to get you both back to the prison."

Olly seemed to have gained his breath back quicker than his brothers, he came over and held up his head. "Hayden come on, ya did well but we've gotta keep moving. Every zombie in a mile radius would have seen the flare, we did."

Hayden responded with a simple "Mmm."

"What did you say your name was miss?" Olly asked.

"Lily."

"Where did ya say ya were taking us?" He quizzed.

"The prison, I'm with a group. You guys need food." I looked at them both, clearly they hadn't washed in days even weeks.

Their clothes were caked in mood, their skin and hands were filthy and cut. Their fingers boney.

"Hayden did ya hear that? A group, a prison, somewhere safe." Olly said nicely to his weak brother.

"Well what are we waiting for?" He smirked.

I quickly pulled off my jacket, and with the help of Olly, I put it on Hayden who was violently shaking. I also noticed Olly chattering teeth and I unravelled my scarf.

"Here," I said as I wrapped it round his neck, "Think of it was a thank you gift."

"Thanks," he smiled and began to pick up Hayden.

I grabbed the torch I dropped earlier as then propped Hayden's other arm over my shoulder.

"This way," I pointed the torch forward.

I marched over the branches and weeds, Olly tried but occasionally stumbled and Hayden would try his best to keep up but would let his feet drag every so often and I couldn't blame him, he looked exhausted.

"How long have you guys been living rough out here for?" I asked.

"Bout a month." Hayden replied, his voice was husky.

"Jeez, I didn't even last two weeks." I was lucky. "Did you have a group?"

Olly spoke this time, "Yeah, a herd of zombies walked into our camp. We had to leg it and leave the others."

I suspected the tone of his voice, "Family?" I asked. He nodded once.

"Mother, father, sister." Hayden practically slurred. "I'm so sorry."

Moments of silence passed by, there wasn't even the hoot of an owl to disturb us.

"So what were ya doing up a tree?" Olly asked.

"Yeah ya crazy bastard," Hayden half heartedly laughed with his eyes closed.

I wasn't sure if it was safe for him to sleep. "I came out here to look for my.. friend, he went out on a hunt this morning and hasn't came back. Seen him?" I gave it a shot.

"Sorry miss," Hayden said, "No."

***

"How far is this prison Lily?" Olly asked seriously out of breath, there was no way I could carry two men back to camp.

"Not long," and it really wasn't, I could see the clearing.

I shone my torch onto the gate, "We're here." I announced.

"Lily!" Maggie shouted.

I peered closer and managed to make out two figures behind the gate, it was Glen and Maggie.

"Open the gate, we've got some new guys and they need help."

They did as I asked, they quickly pulled back the gate.

"Who are they?" Glen asked as he replaced Olly of carrying Hayden who had stopped to catch his breath.

"Hayden and Olly, they saved my life."

I walked and helped Hayden up the path with the help of Glen, but Maggie ran in front of me and stopped me in my tracks.

"Lily stop, and listen to me. I don't think you should go inside." She said, her eyes deadly serious.

"Why? Maggie, I don't have time for this. They need our help."

I pushed past her and continued to the inner gate which was open.

There was no way I was abandoning these two, they saved my life and I owed them. They needed our help and I'll give them it. I don't care if anyone doesn't trust them or thinks they're dangerous because they're strangers, I'm in their debt.

I glanced over my shoulder to see Maggie helping Olly, it was nice to see she was on board. She must have realised the state these two are in.

Glen started to stutter nervously, "Urm, err Lily, I-um, I think you should stay out here?" He said as we came to the entrance.

"Why?!" I demanded.

"It's Daryl." My heart dropped.

He was dead wasn't he. Or injured. Or bit.

That's why Maggie was stopping me only minutes ago, she was protecting me from inside. And now so was Glen.

"He's dead?!" I squealed.

"No no, he's-"

"He's bit?!"

"No Lily, he's fine it's just-"

I cut Glen off again, "Well thank god, thank god he is okay. Now we need to pray that Hayden and Olly are. They're my priority if Daryl is okay."

My heart began to beat regularly again, Daryl was okay. I couldn't wish for anything more. He must have returned not long after I left, he may have been going out of his mind knowing I was out there looking for him, and I'm sure Rick wouldn't let him go after me either.

I kicked open the gate, "Hershel," I called out. "Hershel, I need your help. There's two guys, they're malnourished." I explained as I watched mine and Hayden's footing down the steps.

"Lily! Thank god!" It was Daryl's voice.

I looked up and took in the scene. There were broken pieces of glass and plate over the floor. In one corner stood my Uncle Pete being restrained by a red faced Rick and Michonne, in the other was Hershel who stood in front of Daryl, one of his crutches was stretched out over him. Carl was next to his dad, staring wide eyed at me, like he was scared and worried for me. In the background I could hear baby Judith's cry and Beth's soothing tones.

What happened?

I stood flabbergasted and stared into the eyes of every person in the room.

Glen towed Hayden off my shoulder and away from me, he sat him down on the table where he rested his head on the surface.

"Oh my god Lil, thank god you're okay!" Daryl stepped past Hershel and made his way over to me.

His left eye was largely swollen and already starting to bruise.

Before he could pull me in for a hug, Glen stepped in between us. "Back off Daryl," he pushed him back by his chest.

"What is going on? What happened to your eye?" I looked over to my uncle, "Pete?!" I questioned angrily.

"You won't hate me for it darlin', he fucking deserved it." He said, he breath ragged with anger.

Daryl began to fidget and weep, "Lily ya got to listen to me, ya got to understand."

"Understand what Daryl?" I felt my heart begin to break in two as Daryl shed tears in front of me.

All I wanted to do was step forward and hold his face in my hands, tell him that it's okay, I'm listening and I'll understand but Glen stopped that from happening.

"I had to do it, I couldn't not do it.." His sentences drifted off.

"Had to do what Daryl?!" My voice raised in pitch, anxiety began to show.

What had he done?

This wasn't the man I knew, this was the shell of a man, this was a broken man whimpering in disgrace. He looked so ashamed of himself, yet torn.

"Tell her Daryl!" Rick shouted, "Tell her now!"

This eruption from Rick only caused more sobs from Daryl. He couldn't even look me in the eye, he was staring down at his feet.

Fear rushed through me, something was bad. I knew something bad were to happen today! The second Daryl said he was going hunting I knew.

"It's Bella. She's here."
