Hearts of the Past and Present

"What's happened?!" Maggie said as she jumped to her feet, the sight of the men carrying in Daryl alarmed her.

"Is he bit?" Olly asked as he entered the living cell.

"No, we had a crash." Michonne explained.

I followed Michonne and the guys into the living cell, I was sobbing loudly shouting Daryl's name. Maggie saw, and heard, the state I was in and ran over.

"Lily, my god, sit down." She held my arm and began to drag me away.

"No, no. I need to go with Daryl!" I objected.

"You need to calm down." Rick ordered.

I yanked my arm free and followed them all into the bed cells, ignoring Maggie and Rick.

Hershel was already inside the first aid cell, the first cell I spent the night in, with everything he could ever need set up around him.

I peaked over the men, hovering around the door of the cell to get a glimpse of what was going on. Pete gently rested Daryl's head down as the men lowered him onto the bed.

"Maggie, Beth," Hershel called.

The men poured out of the small cell and were replaced by Maggie and Beth, I tried to slip through but Rick pulled me away and Olly stood firmly in front of the door.

Beth pulled it shut and the metal clanged, she then tugged across the sheet Hershel fashioned into a curtain. I could no longer see Daryl.

I would only get in the way and get even more upset if I were in the cell too, so I let Rick tow me into the living cell. I dumped myself onto the nearest chair, Rick took the one beside me and comfortingly placed his hand on thigh.

"Is anyone else hurt?" Glen asked as he wiped Daryl's blood off of his hands and onto his t-shirt.

"Hayden's hurt his collar bone, I've hurt my shoulder," Pete said, "But the girls are alright."

Olly helped his brother sit down at the table. Pete sat at the same one.

"What the hell happened?" Rick asked, bewildered at the return we made.

"It was my fault." Michonne said. "I swerved the car on the icy road, I didn't think, it was just an instinct. I couldn't hit the walker kid."

"But you're like a walker warrior, how could you not take it out with the car?!" Carl asked.

LIt's slightly different when it comes to kids, you should have seen what we saw in the hospital." Michonne said coldly, "Actually you shouldn't have, it was horrific."

Rick, Glen and Carl glanced around at us, waiting for one of us to explain.

"It was a walker baby," Hayden said. "Couldn't have been more than a week old when it died."

"She," I hissed.
In response, Rick caressed my leg to sooth me.

"She died," Hayden corrected.

"Other than that and the crash, how was the run?" Glen asked.

"Crazy," Pete said. "The fire alarm went off, woke 'em all up and sent them our way."

"The car took a beating," Hayden added.

"Did you get the stuff for Bella?" Rick asked.

"Yeah," Pete said bluntly, "Majority of it I think."

"Carl, Glen, Olly, go get the supplies out the jeep." Rick said.

The three nodded and left the living cell just as Beth entered.

"Who else is hurt?" She asked holding up bandages in one hand and alcohol in the other.

"Me," Hayden said looking straight at me.

Fuck that, there was no way I was going to sit there and let him guilt trip me. For the last time, not now!! I had bigger problems to deal with.

I rose from my chair and stormed out of the cell, heading outside to see the others and get some fresh air. Rick followed me, he stood beside me as I kicked some snow watching the boys unpack the car.

"What was that about?" He asked curiously.

"Hayden, urm - we.. Exchanged words on the run." I partly explained awkwardly.

"He loves you," Rick said as if it were obvious.

"How did you..?"

"I can tell when a guy falls for a pretty girl, hell I did. And he has all the same symptoms." Rick's eyes fell upon his son.

Lori, he loved Lori so much.

"Love can drive you mad," he said, his face was hard.

I knew Rick went a bit crazy after Lori died, who could blame him. But there was something in his voice which made me think that he was speaking about someone else.

"Not you?" I asked.

"Not me," he confirmed.

"Shane, my partner, my best friend. He loved Lori, things happened between them when they thought I was dead, it killed him inside when I returned .. To Lori that is. Everyday him seeing me with Lori and Carl, it pushed him closer and closer to the edge, hating me more and more everyday. It was jealousy that done it, but I don't hate him for it."

"Done what?" I asked, I hadn't heard this story.

"He tried to kill me."

I stopped myself from gasping, this wasn't a drama programme.

"I had to kill him, for my family.." His sentence drifted.

"I understand," I said.

"I didn't expect you to but thank you," Rick smiled.

"Why are you telling me this now?" I asked.

"I'm just safe guarding you." My puzzled expression made Rick explain, "It could happen with you, Daryl and Hayden. Someone is going to get hurt."

There was no might, maybe or could, somebody will get hurt.

"Balance things, tell it how it is but keep it calm and as pleasant as possible and be honest." Rick said.

"It's so hard to-"

My sentence was interrupted by pain filled screams that echoed along the hallow hallways of the prison.

Instinctively, I turned around in hope of running back inside to Daryl's bed to shush him and sooth him and tell him everything was okay but Rick grabbed my wrist and pulled me back. I slammed into his chest with such force my breath was knocked out of me.

Daryl's blood curdling screams and cries out continued. Rick held my head tightly to his chest, I sobbed hard into his skirt.

"He'll be okay, he's okay."

He didn't sound okay.

I had my head against Rick's chest with my hands pressed tightly over my ears, he wrapped an arm around my head over my ears too and my waist, holding me there.

Rick's grip loosened, meaning the screams had stopped. I looked up to Rick and his teeth were chatting, we had been out in the snow for a while. Together we walked back inside.

The majority of the group was located in the living cell, sat silently around the tables looking worried. Beth was bouncing Judith on her knee while Michonne played with her hands. Glen was sat with Maggie and Hayden.

Hayden had his shirt loosely open and I could see the wrapping of his bandages for his collar bone, he must have done it before for him to know so.

Rick joined Pete's side and spoke quietly too him, he was probably warning my uncle of the currently situation and giving him the low down, right now I didn't really care what Pete knew.

The only people missing were Hershel and Olly. I glanced into the bed block and spied Olly. He was sat in front of the cell under the steps to level two, he was sat outside of Bella's cell.

I walked over, "What are you doing?"

Olly sat cross legged on the floor, mirroring him was Bella on the other side of the door. On the floor, set out in front of them, were cards from a deck.

"Playing cards." Olly said like it was no big deal.

"With her?" I asked, disgusted.

"Yes. With her."

Oh he was so much like his brother.

"I'm sorry about Daryl," Bella said.

"He's not dead." I said sharply.

"Still.. I hope you're okay." She said.

"Oh, get your head out of my arse." I rolled my eyes and turned around.
On my return to the living cell, Hershel emerged from Daryl's.

I rushed to Dr.Hershel, "Is he okay?!" I asked.

"He has a serious concussion, I have gave him a large amount of morphine for his shoulder injury so he'll be drifting in and out of consciousness for the next few hours, he's asleep now."

"What about his head wound, and the bleeding from his nose and ear?!"

"I'm afraid there's nothing I can do to see what, how or why that happened. I don't have a machine that can scan the brain.." Hershel replied.

I chewed nervously on my nails, "Can I go in and see him?"

Hershel pulled back the curtains for me.

The cell was dimly lit with a large candle, the wax had melted and dripped down onto the stool that acted like a table. The candle light didn't do much for Daryl's colour.

He laid in bed, wrapped up tight in covers and his head was wrapped up in bandages. His face was a sickly white, and even though the prison was chilly, his forehead was covered in sweat.

"Oh, Daryl." I said tearfully.

His pillow was bloodstained, and so was his bandage.

"I'll be back to put on fresh bandages later on." Hershel said, "Just keep an eye on him Lily, and let him know you're here."

"Okay." I whispered.

Hershel left the cell and closed the curtains so an unconscious Daryl and I could have some privacy.

I looked for his hand, he was tucked in right with countless bed sheets. I pulled them back to reveal more injuries he suffered. His shoulder was bandaged up tightly, and there was a large plaster like square on his arm soaking up more blood.

I looked to his uninjured hand but it wasn't free either. His wrist was tied down to the frame of the bed. It took me a moment to realise why. It was incase he dies from his head injuries and turns, we can't risk having a walker inside the prison with us and this was the best way to protect us all. And it broke my heart.

I couldn't think about any 'what ifs', I have to stay strong and think positively for Daryl.

I pulled the sheet back up to his neck. I used the sleeve of my skirt to wipe the sweat from his forehead. His hair, some locks crusted with blood, hung over his bandages. Out of habit, I gently played with it brushing it back.

"Hey Daryl, I'm here." I spoke, but my voice was cracked. "I'm here and I'm not going anywhere, ever again. It can be me and you again if you want, if you'll forgive me. ...I love you Daryl."

I half expected his eyes to flutter open, for him to smile at my presence and tell me to stop being so daft and crying over him, but no, Daryl didn't. He didn't wake up, he didn't move, or smile or speak, he continued to be locked in his own mind, his mind which is protecting him from the pain.

It's horrific that something like this has to happen for me to realise and admit my true feelings to Daryl, I knew there was something there just I didn't know it was this strong. It was unbearable seeing him like this..

When Daryl wakes up, I am never letting him go again. He's never going to leave my sight whether he likes it or not.
