It's the End of the World, Didn't You Get the Memo?

Nobody Puts Baby In A Corner, Especially Not Merle Dixon

“I don’t care what Glenn says, she really is gorgeous,” Maggie grinned atKatherine as they stood by the Impala, gearing up for the run they were about to go on and the farmer’s girl was running her hand over the pristine hood. Carl decided to stay behind, doing what his father ‘would do’ and taking care of the baby and being the last man standing so to speak. “When did you get her?”

“My aunt gave her to me before she died, about ten years ago now. She brought her a week after it came out,” Katherine recalled with a small smile, remembering when Pol went against her father’s wishes and taught Katherine how to drive. She was always going against her brother, Polly and Dermot were the only ones in the family who were good to Malachy and Katherine, they were even married.

“Sure she won’t break down?” Glenn joked, putting the bags in thetrunk.

“For that Mr Rhee, you’ll be sitting in the back, Maggie rides shotgun!” Katherine slapped his shoulder and jumped in the car, Maggie laughing at Glenn’s face and they all got in, Katherine watching Daryl give her a small smile beside Carl. “I’m picking the music though!” They waved at the rest of the group goodbye, giving a sly smile to Daryl before heading out with the lovers, Axel and Oscar opening the gates for them.

Glenn stared away at the pristinely clean car, the rattle of almost empty bottles coming from the crate underneath the seat.

“This car is nice, it’s really clean,” Glenn stated a little awkwardly, going through the first gate that Oscar was at and then driving down the courtyard to Axel.

“She’s my baby, the only thing more valuable to me than this is Malachy,” ’And Daryl,’ “She needs to look good for the end of the world,” Katherine stated, getting out on the road and leaf blew around the tires, August coming in a few days. She clicked play on the CD player and Ryan Bingman began to play at medium volume through thespeakers.

“I didn’t think you’d be into country,” Maggie stated, hearing the lyrics to Hallelujah, smiling away at Katherine with her usual cutie pie smile and big green/caramel eyes. “I love Ryan Bingman,”

“Good singer, although if he was a walker, I wouldn’t mind him biting me,” She nudged Maggie playfully and they both began to giggle amongst themselves.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“You have the strangest sense in music,” Glenn voiced strangely from the backseat of the Impala, listening to Howl being played by Florence + The Machine forty five minutes later, driving through another town to find some sort of store that hadn't been burnt out yet. “First that Ryan dude, AC/DC, your Irish crap-”

“Hey, don't bad mouth Irish music in my car or I'll drop you out right now Pizza Boy,” Katherine warned, her eyes glaring up through the rear view mirror at him. “You're lucky we're listening to anything, I almost threw the CD player out when I received the car,”

“Then we'd be listening to Eliza Fitzgerald,” Glenn muttered sarcastically, making Maggie roll her eyes at his childishness.

“Alright, you pick the music on the way back, me and Maggie happen to like this,”

“Do you have Stevie Nicks?” He questioned and the girls gave him a strange look. “Joking,” Katherine smirked, grabbing a piece of a paper from the dashboard and Maggie looked over her shoulder to see it was a track list for that certain CD.

“You've got two more songs Glenn,” Maggie told him with a giggle and Glenn scoffed, looking out the window with tinged cheeks.

They pasted a few aimless walkers along the way until they got to a mini supermarket so to speak or a corner shop. They parked outside, Katherine getting out first and looking around for walkers but the roads and streets were completely empty, so Glenn and Maggie got out and they took the duffle bags from the trunk and approached the door. The windows and doors were layered with dust, indicated no one had been around there for a while and the writing on the signs and walls was worn off and unclear.

“Clear outside,” Maggie told him, still looking around.

“Glenn, lead the way,” Katherine gestured to the Korean as she locked up the car, grabbing her gun and twirling the torch in her hand. Glenn rammed the door with his shoulder, grunting each time but it wasn't making any difference whatsoever. “You need a woman's touch,” Katherine approached the door, taking a deep breath before round house kicking the thing down, and a sudden roar of bats and birds began to fly out, making the three of them squeal like pigs. “Feckin' hell!”

“I thought you McKinneys don't scare easy,” Glenn stated with a matter of fact after he took some breaths.

“I wasn't scared, I was taken by surprise!” Katherine replied in a higher pitch, her chest heaving at the startle before Glenn made his way in first, the women following behind.

The shop was almost full, food and drinks were still where they would be and it looked like the cash register had gone through, even though whoever did it, didn’t know that cash was not going to save them. They couldn’t see any walkers standing around, but Glenn told them to be careful of any that may have been on the floor, and not to spend too long.

Katherine went straight for the alcohol section, using the bag she had as a sort of 'adults' only sort of thing and she kept her gun raised, peering around the aisle carefully before calling it clear. She began to pick the Jack Daniels, Jose, Vodka before making her way around to the personal hygiene section, keeping an eye on Glenn who was stuffing bags of crisps, cans, juice, microwave meals and other snacks into her bag. They didn't go out of date until late 2014, which was very fortunate.

Katherine snatched a few boxes of condoms for Maggie, checking the dates also, and then the tampons, razors, deodorant and soaps and stuffed them in the side of the bag. They spent around ten minutes getting what they wanted themselves and for the others, making sure they got all the essentials too.

“I found a box of twinkies!” Maggie called over to Katherine, which actually startled the Irishwoman.

“You're my new best friend girly,” Katherine grinned away, jogging up to her, holding the bag in her arms firmly and Maggie handed her the other duffle so she could pick up the full and unopened cardboard box of twinkies.

“You know, I've seen you spending more time with a certain redneck recently,” Maggie stated in a innocent tone, and Katherine couldn't help but smile at the thought of Daryl. “And by the smile on your face...”

“Aye, we kissed,” Katherine admitted to Maggie, Glenn's head snapping in the direction of the sentence that had just come out of her mouth.

“Daryl? Daryl Dixon?” Glenn stuttered, coming over to the two women with a wild, curious look.

“Yes! We kissed a couple of days ago after I admitted I liked him and that was his way of saying it back. I know it's been a couple of weeks but-”

“Who can wait in an apocalypse?” Maggie finished and Katherine nodded, knowing she understood because of Glenn. “Well, if he is good to you then I find it cute, an Irishwoman and a redneck, who would have thought?”

“Yeah, like the Pizza Boy and the farmer's girl,” Katherine retorted with a grin. “Just don't mention anything okay? Things are going good slow, so solemnly swear that you won't make any indication,”

“Solemnly swear,” The two said in unison, grinning like idiots.

“God, we've turned into teens again,“ The three of them laughed. “I just need to get my cigarettes and we can get going, you found any formula?” She settled the bags down by the front door and threw herself over the counter effortlessly, looking down to see the old owner was behind the counter with a gunshot wound to the head, his gun lying beside him.

“A few full cans, Glenn's found some toys too,” She took the revolver, checking to see that it actually have a few bullets left and tossed it in her bag before grabbing the last remaining packet of Marlboro Red.

“I thought you quit smoking because of the baby?” Maggie asked, the box bigger than her actually body.

“Stress,” Was the common reply, and it made her smile. “And Daryl finds it sexy,” She grinned, tongue poking between her surprisingly pearly whites and Maggie rolled her eyes playfully.

“We'll come back here soon, there is a lot of stuff we can take but your trunk will only take so much,” Glenn chuckled, Katherine going back over the counter and joining Maggie at the door, quite impressed with their scout and they went out the door cautiously, walkers still not around and they loaded up the car quickly. “I also got beans, batteries, cocktail wieners, many mustards,” Glenn told them, packing in basket and Katherine wondered how she had so much space in her trunk.

“It's a straight shot back to the prison from here,” Katherine said to them, taking out one of the cigarettes and placing it in her mouth and lit it up quickly, leaning against the hood of her car. Her arm wasn't bothering her too much, she had topped up on Vicodin before she left so she shouldn't be able to feel any pain for several more hours.

“Probably make it in time for dinner,” Glenn gave a satisfied smile and Maggie sighed, looking around at the non existent walkers around.

“Is it worrying that it's too quite?” Katherine asked, taking in a long drag and groaning lightly at the smoke that engulfed her lungs.

“I like it, you can't hear 'em growing for once,” Maggie replied, just about fitting the box of twinkies next to the bags in the trunk.

“Makes me nervous, but then I think about Mal eating a bag of cheese balls and it goes back to normal,” Katherine commented. “Back at home though, you can always hear 'em behind that fence,” She thought for a moment, thought about the fact she had called it home, where she lived with her family, with Daryl, who would protect her no matter what.

“And where is it y'all good people are calling home?” Oh God she knew that voice, the same voice that had brought three other men to take her and Malachy down, the same voice that was left up in Atlanta chained to a pipe by T-Dog. Katherine jumped up from the car, raising her gun at Merle Dixon who was approaching them from around the corner, Glenn and Maggie doing the same once they had dropped the baby formula basket.

“Merle?” Glenn questioned the bloody nose man, Katherine stared at the metal that was wrapped around his stump and had a knife screwed into the side, and then to the gun in his hand.

“Wow!” Merle exclaimed, looking at Glenn and Katherine with a disbelieving laugh. “Look at you sugar lips, been a while since I saw your beautiful face,” He grinned away at Katherine, blood dripping down his chin.

“Drop the gun Merle,” She ordered, holding hers firmly aimed at his forehead. He did as she said without a second thought, continuing to chuckle. Katherine couldn't believe that this man was related to Daryl, a sick, racist, perverted bastard who had threatened to rape her not too long ago.

“Where's that brother of yours? Not here protecting his baby sis?” Glenn and Maggie looked briefly at Katherine with confused looks.

“You've met him after Atlanta?” Glenn questioned her, eyes still focused on Merle.

“With three guys, who all of course were shot down by Mal with ease,” Katherine smirked.

“You with these now hmm? Well, can you tell me, is my brother alive?” Merle asked her and she gritted her teeth, not wanting to say anything but Glenn nodded.

“Yeah,”

“Hey, you take me to him and I'll call it even on everything that happened up there in Atlanta, no hard feelings,” He told them, and of course Katherine rolled her eyes.

“You seem to forget you think we're stupid, do you remember when we caught you out? I believe you went running for the hills,” She continued to mock, and Merle growled under his breath. “You stay here, and we'll bring Daryl right to you, he can pummel your ass,” Merle whipped out a gun from the back of his pants, shooting at the Impala's back window and the trio moved out the way from the exploding glass, Glenn making sure that Katherine was okay but when they turned back, Merle had Maggie down on the ground with his knife at her neck and a gun to her head.

“Don't insult me again sweetheart,” Merle smirked, and Glenn pointed his gun close to him. Katherine could easily have taken him out while he was distracted, but she wouldn't want him to lay a hand on Maggie and she didn't want Daryl to find out she killed his brother.

“Let go of her, let go of her!” Glenn screamed at him, not caring whether walkers heard him or not, desperation in his eyes as he watched Maggie swallow hard, trying to avoid nicking her neck on the blade.

“Ah, ah, hand it over, and don't you dare try anything with me Irish,” Katherine grimaced at the nickname, and Glenn reluctantly passed over his gun and the same with Katherine, without a second thought. They watched as he let Maggie go back to Glenn and he gestured to the Impala. “We're going for a little drive,”

“Number one, we aren't going back to our camp, and number two, you're packing the new window shield in bub,” Katherine told him, completely fearless of what Merle Dixon had to offer. She had been through worse, at home, at the hospital and in the army.

“We're going somewhere else, and you better watch that feisty tone of yours missy, Glenn, you're driving,” Merle ordered, guns still on them and Katherine rummaged through her pocket and tossed Glenn the keys with a small Leprechaun attached. “How cute,”

“I thought so,” Katherine replied coldly, Maggie sliding in the back seatsilently, Merle getting in the middle and Katherine on the end. The ruthless redneck had a gun pressed Maggie's side and his bladed hand was resting against Katherine's pale neck.

“It won't go in gear,” Glenn stated shakily.

“You need to tug it,”Katherine told him quietly.

“I am!” He shouted back at her and Merle rolled his eyes in annoyance.

“Girly, you do it but if you try anything, I'll kill your friend,” Merle lifted the knife away from Katherine and she lifted herself up from the leather seat, leaning through the gap and wedging the gear hard and the car lurched forward. She could hear Merle whistling behind her. “Now that is a pretty sight,” She ignored the anger that was trying to boil through her blood and she pressed play on the CD before sitting back down, beside Merle and he grinned sickly at her. “I hope you don't mind Glenn, but I think I'll take Kathy here,”

“My brother will kill you,” Katherine looked at him with a blank expression, her accent thick with a bitter sweet tone, Stevie Nicks beginning to play at a low medium through the speakers. “And then I'll mount your head on a stick, you got me?” He simply laughed before telling Glenn the directions to wherever they were going and Katherine looked at Maggie with a small smile. “You'll be okay,”

“You can't promise something like that sweet cheeks,” Merle told her and she simply chuckled.

“I can, because when you take us to your boss, because clearly you are unstable for the job, I'll be calling the shots. You want the camp, you want Daryl, you want Malachy and you want me, but you can't have me if I'm dead, so you'll start dishing out terms somewhere. Right?” She raised an eyebrow and Merle's face blew up red and he slammed the side of his metal clasp in her face, making Katherine groan, feeling a few of her teeth come lose. It stung, that was about it thanks to the painkillers that she was dosed up on. “That tickled,”

“Katherine, stop it!” Glenn shouted at her provoking him even more, and Katherine spat out the bloody back tooth that came lose and spat it on the carpet of the car. “Just stop it,”

“He won't kill us Glenn, not until he finds out where the camp is. And he won't,”

@hoanie

Thankyou!
There were a lot of different responses when it was first posted about having the main characters that were Irish. Some people can't take new ideas! :)

I'm only on chapter 4 but this is excellent! I'm from Kentucky in the foothills of Appalachian mountains. I love that you have Irish main characters! But ill let you know what I think as soon as I'm done reading all of it. I'm a huge fan of Daryl Dixon and the walking dead series. 10/10 from me :)

@cocaineinwonderland
If people are going to complain about that, then why are they reading the story? (I never get stuff like that, you're not forced to read it or anything). Anyways I love your character(s) and it's nice to read about people who aren't American, especially the 'how they got to America' bit cause its nearly always different.
I'm English too but I don't attempt to write to the American time zones, gives them something to wake up to I suppose! Thanks for agreeing to take a read :)

@chroniclesofcharnia

I know, it's just a lot of people have been complaining about how she's not like the other characters in people's stories. I make my characters realistic to a T, and a lot of people don't approve that Katherine can't get pregnant, isn't American, isn't all puppy dog in love with Daryl, etc. I wanted her as different as I could possibly make her and some people love it more than hate it so I'm cool with that :) I'm glad you are enjoying the story, I do try and update within the times of American readers as well considering I'm in England aha. That's what I used to do, I would sit up until 4 in the morning (when I knew it was American time) and watch the episode to get to writing it. I'd love to read what you've written, I'll get right on it :D
