It's the End of the World, Didn't You Get the Memo?

Sorry, Havens Aren’t Allowed To Be Safe Passed Two Months

“Jesus Christ, why is this so hard?” Katherine screeched as she held the crossbow tight to her shoulder, already firing three arrows at a small group of walkers and missed each one. Daryl had to go and finish it off but when she pulled the crossbow away, her arm was shaking lightly. Malachy had come back to the church and the group started doing some jobs to help them out, even teaching Carl and Beth how to shoot properly without hurting themselves.

“I thought Rick said you’re a sniper?”

“When I was a medic, I took a year working with snipers, I’m a damn good shot, back when I had a decent arm,” Katherine growled, shoving the crossbow into Daryl’s chest and she began to massage her shoulder lightly. “How long have you been doing this?”

“A few years, came naturally I guess,” Daryl shrugged, sitting down on the log next to her in the middle of the forest, looking around to make sure of any walkers that might have been passing. “I hunt and track too,”

“A real life redneck,” Katherine commented and Daryl huffed in annoyance.

“If you’re just gonna’ piss me off lady, I won’t help you,” He told her, getting up from the log but stopped when he heard her sigh, turning around to see Katherine run a hand over her face.

“I’m sorry, it’s just, ever since my muscles got shredded, and it’s getting harder to handle kickback,”

“Practice makes perfect,” Daryl held out the crossbow again with a tiny smile, and she took it, pulling up the string and setting in an arrow. “Let’s try and grab some grub,” They tried once again, Daryl taking Katherine’s bow and arrow and letting her use the crossbow as they waited for some squirrels to appear in the trees. Teaching a woman younger than him was hard, she seemed like the type of girl who was brought up in the best family but wanted a different type of lifestyle. Katherine knew how to handle herself, and Daryl admired it. They saw a rather large squirrel standing by its lonesome and both of them raised their weapons.

“If I hit this, I’m taking your bandana,” She whispered, barely audio between the two.

“I don’t think so Irish,” He shook his head with an almost smile.

“Scared I’ll make the shot?” This time he did smile, and Katherine took the initiative to move the crossbow a little to the left, slamming her steel-toe boot down on a rock, making a clink and the squirrel ran for it just as she fired the arrow. The arrow missed the squirrel’s body, but went through the tail and stunned to the ground. “Fucking yes!” Katherine pumped her fist into the air, grinning away madly as Daryl stood up with a surprised look. He motioned for her to shush before going over and grabbing the squirrel, finishing it off before walked back over to her, seeing her awfully giddy with herself, her arm no longer shaking.

“You didn’t hit it-“

“Shut your pie hole Dixon, I made that shot and I damn proud!” She grinned and Daryl stared at how happy she looked, made him realize that maybe Malachy didn’t appreciate her talents much.
Katherine knew better than to hug him in her excitement, instead she bounced up to him and her hand made its way into his back pocket, making him jump at the physical contact and she snatched the dirtied, red and white pattern bandana from him and dangled it in his face. “Mine,”

“C’mon, the group are probably stewing in their juices waiting for us,” Daryl gestured for her to follow him as she wrapped the bandana around her head and smirked, striking a pose.

“Am I a redneck now?”

“You’re something else ain’tcha’?” Daryl watched as she giggled, taking the bandana off and wrapped it around the bad arm of her leather jacket, tying and pulling it with her teeth. Katherine could only smile at him.

“Do you want to know now?” She questioned, handing over his crossbow and he handed back her bow and arrow.

“Eh?”

“We had a deal,”

“I was jokin’ Irish,”

“You can call me Katherine, I’m no Siren y’know,” Katherine teased, her accent light and floating to the redneck’s ears. “I made a deal and I’ll stick to it. I mean, I can’t leave you wondering about why I was sewing myself back together and I guess it’ll make you understand why Malachy wasn’t quite up with the idea of you lot being taken in with us,” Katherine informed him and he was silent, listening. “A few weeks ago, we brought in a group of three people, a little younger than us and they convinced us that one of their members had the flu. Me being a doctor and too trusting, let them in until they were feeling better. They stayed for a little while, the ‘ill’ one, Travis, got close to me and one day, I saw him up and about. I realized that he was well, too well, and Malachy over heard them talking about taking everything we had,” She paused when she saw Daryl shoot a walker a few meters away from them and then went to pick up the arrow. “I tried to reason with Travis, see if we could make a deal and the next thing I know I was down on the floor covered in my own blood,”

“You got shot?”

“Three times in the gut, Malachy took them out as quickly as possible and the bullets were deep into my womb, and he had no choice but to take it out with my directions on a piece of paper. My life was in his hands and I’ve been up and about more than I should be, what you saw last night was replacing my stitches and I ran out of morphine,” Katherine finished, sticking her hands in her pockets sheepishly, feeling tense.

“We can always do a run this afternoon, there is a pharmacy in the town we haven’t gone into yet,” Daryl stated as the church came into sight, and they saw the group hanging around the front in chairs eating already.

“Er, what’s this?” Katherine put her hands on her wide hips, narrowing her eyes at her brother passing around plates that looked to have chicken and bread on. Daryl was quite surprised too, but sat down next to Lori with a plate anyway.

“Me and Rick found a deer wondering up the road,”

“You know we were getting it!” Malachy laughed, getting up from the seat, watching his sister become angry and annoyed with him.

“Easy there baby sis, next time,” He shrugged and she rolled her eyes, going over to the group and chucking the squirrel down on the wooden table that had been brought outside. “Don’t get your knickers in a twist Kath, we got it done quickly,” Katherine went to punch him in the shoulder in annoyance, but he grabbed her fist. “Don’t make me knock you on your ass in front of our new friends,”

“Bring it McKinney,” Katherine moved her fist, ducking under his arm and tossing his body over her shoulder in one kick move, but bent down in a seething pain. The group didn’t notice it, they were leaning in their seats with a excited smiles. Daryl stared at her in concern.

“Regretting challenging me old man?” Malachy jumped up from the leafy ground, kicking around at her legs and she fell down, rolling backwards and throwing a punch to his stomach. Katherine jumped, wrapping her legs around his neck and twisting them both down so he landed face first into the dirt as she grabbed his knife from his belt and she sat on his back, knife pressed again her cheek. Unlike Malachy, she was breathing hard and she could feel that she might have pulled a stitch. “Say you’re sorry for being an ass,”

“Sorry for being an ass,” Malachy grumbled and Katherine got up, turning around and letting out a short mentioned scream. “Walkers!” Malachy jumped up from his postion on the ground when a crowd of walkers came close, seeing them straight away and began to drag themselves a little faster.

“Into the church, quickly!” Katherine ordered, dismissing them using their weapons and Lori bundled in first with Carl and Beth, Malachy making sure the others got in saftely and Rick and Daryl was left with Katherine. “We need to go and get the cars ready, help the others get packed up,” Katherine began to jog away, but looked around to see Rick and Daryl trying to fight them off. “Come on!” She screeched, alerting them and they ran with her, making sure they were out of sight from the walkers and wouldn’t trip over the wires.

“We need to go and help the others,” Rick told her but she shook her head.

“We can’t, Malachy will make sure the walkers are distracted. Damn it!” She grumbled to herself, upset and once they reached the cars, she grabbed the keys to the Impala and got inside, revving the engine. One good thing they’ve had in months and it’s destroyed by a lack of attention, how could she have been so stupid? Katherine grabbed the walkie talkie on the dashboard. “Doctor to Sargent, where is your location? Over,” Katherine watched as Daryl got on his sleek motorbike and Rick get into the small car.

Sargent coming up to opening, over,

“I need you to get the others with the SUV and meet back here as quickly as possible,” Katherine climbed out of the open window and tossed Daryl the keys to Malachy’s SUV. “They’re coming up to the opening of the tunnel,”

“We can’t just leave you here,” Rick protested but she shook her head.

“Go, they’ll be distracted now,” She pointed back to the direction of the church, seeing black smoke rise up through the forest. “Quickly! I’ll see you guys soon,” Katherine pulled out the sniper from the back seat.

“We’ll be ten minutes,” Her pale eyes watched them ride off through the forest and she looked back around her, keeping an eye out on the open road to make sure it’ll stay clear enough for them to pass through.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

By the time that the group, including the McKinney siblings, were safe and out of the road, they stopped to make sure everybody got their bearings and nobody had gotten bit. While the church was burning down, apparently the tunnel collapsed and engulfed it with smoke just as they managed to get out, but now Katherine had Lori sitting in the open boot of her car and was checking her chest with the stethoscope.

“I’m really sorry this happened Lori-“

“It’s not your fault Malachy, as long as the baby is okay, I don’t care,” Lori told him and Katherine shushed her, listening closely and then moved the stethoscope onto her bloated stomach. She could hear the faint heartbeat of the baby inside of her. “It’s okay?”

“Yeah, I want to keep you on the oxygen for the next hour, clear up the smoke in the lungs and make sure it doesn’t compromise the baby either,” Katherine informed her, Malachy grabbing the oxygen tank from the Impala boot and handing it to her, hooking it up to an oxygen mask.

“How did you get all of this?” Hershel questioned the younger sibling, looking through her medical backpack.

“Raided a few hospitals, I’ll need to head to the pharmacy to get some more morphine though, that’s if you’re going to deliver by C-section?” She questioned Lori and she looked at her with unsurely. “If you’re giving birth naturally, we’ll wait it out but if we’re doing a C-section, I suggest we do it before you go into labour,”

“Have you ever delivered a baby?” Lori questioned in worry as she pulled the oxygen mask away for the moment, coughing again and Katherine nodded.

“When I did my OB rotation, I’ve done it many times and many different types. Breeches, C-sections, natural births…”

“She knows her stuff Lori, don’t worry,” Rick told her, seemingly more concerned about the child inside her instead of Lori. “Right now, we need a plan, made a safe place to camp for the night, and get moving tomorrow,”

“The safest place we had was the church, and we screwed it up,” Malachy told him, angry with himself also. “We lost half of the cans and the weapons in that place. All we have is clothes, medical supplies and a few guns. That’s it,”

“Where are we going to go? We’ve been to every place and none of it is safe,” Maggie told the Sheriff and Rick looked towards Daryl, who gave him a sympathetic look.

“We’ll just have to keep looking. We’ve got two experts with us now, these two know more about dangerous situations than we do,” Rick smiled at the two McKinney siblings and they gave a small smile back.

“We’re with you Rick,”

“Good, Glenn get the map, we can look to see where else we can go,”

@hoanie

Thankyou!
There were a lot of different responses when it was first posted about having the main characters that were Irish. Some people can't take new ideas! :)

I'm only on chapter 4 but this is excellent! I'm from Kentucky in the foothills of Appalachian mountains. I love that you have Irish main characters! But ill let you know what I think as soon as I'm done reading all of it. I'm a huge fan of Daryl Dixon and the walking dead series. 10/10 from me :)

@cocaineinwonderland
If people are going to complain about that, then why are they reading the story? (I never get stuff like that, you're not forced to read it or anything). Anyways I love your character(s) and it's nice to read about people who aren't American, especially the 'how they got to America' bit cause its nearly always different.
I'm English too but I don't attempt to write to the American time zones, gives them something to wake up to I suppose! Thanks for agreeing to take a read :)

@chroniclesofcharnia

I know, it's just a lot of people have been complaining about how she's not like the other characters in people's stories. I make my characters realistic to a T, and a lot of people don't approve that Katherine can't get pregnant, isn't American, isn't all puppy dog in love with Daryl, etc. I wanted her as different as I could possibly make her and some people love it more than hate it so I'm cool with that :) I'm glad you are enjoying the story, I do try and update within the times of American readers as well considering I'm in England aha. That's what I used to do, I would sit up until 4 in the morning (when I knew it was American time) and watch the episode to get to writing it. I'd love to read what you've written, I'll get right on it :D
