Through the Eyes of the Governor

Chapter 14: Apologies

"Rosie...WHY? Why?..." John hadn't moved for ten minutes now. No one had.
Philip decided it was time. "Dad...I think we should bury her. She would want that."
John sniffled and wiped his eyes. "Yeah...she would...wouldn't she?"
There was a moment of silence.
"There's uh...a shovel in the back. I kept it in case the motor home got stuck in some mud and couldn't move. Looks like we're using it for something else now..."
Another moment of silence.
"Will and Nick...why don't you too get to digging? Somewhere in the field, away from the road. Even in the afterlife, I'm sure Rosie would never like the noise." He chuckled halfheartedly.
"Alright."
"I'll help too--"
"ACTUALLY, PHILIP. Why don't you stay here for a bit? I need to, uh...talk to you about a few things. Penny, I want you to go with them for a few minutes. I need to talk to your Dad about some things that you shouldn't be hearin' about."
"...Okay..." Penny said, her eyes filled with tears.
"Hey-hey. It's okay." Philip held his daughter tight.
"We'll get through this. We just need to do it...as a family." He looked down into her sad, little eyes. "Don't worry, pumpkin. We'll talk about this when I'm done talking with Grandpa, okay?"
She wiped her eyes. "...Okay."
"Atta girl. Just give us a few minutes."
Penny glanced outside where Will and Nick were waiting for her. She turned around and gave her dad a big hug before leaving with Nick and Will.
John kept his eyes on Rose. "...I know what I've been to you. I know...what I've become over the years. A REAL asshole. I always treated Will better than you. He never got into trouble like you did. Like when you stole your middle school's lawn mower, drove it down a hill and crashed into a nearby tree," John laughed and shook his head. "Good times. Good Years." His eyes were unsteady now. "I could have done more. For you and Will. For Rose. But I didn't. I always felt like I did. But the truth was that...I was never there for you boys. When my dad came home for World War II, my mother gave birth to me a few years later. His time in the war affected him. He taught me how to survive, how to shoot...but he never taught me about raising a family. By the time I was eighteen, he all but forced me to sign up and I was off to war, a kid scared out of his mind. I survived Vietnam, but my sanity had all but vanished. Your mother brought me back though. She was good like that. Two years later, we married and you were born. Over time though, I began to neglect you and Will and...Rose...I had become what my father was. Not because of Vietnam...but because he was never there for me either. If you thought I was bad, you should have seen your grandfather. Jesus...I just thank god you didn't turn out like me. A piss-drunk piece of shit who neglected his family for SO many years. I am SO SORRY for the way I treated you and Will. REALLY. I am. I don't expect you to forgive me for all I've done...I just want you to understand."
Philip didn't know what to say. Just this morning, he hated his father to no end, but now...
"I...I don't know what to say..."
John looked up from Rose and focused his eyes on Philip. "...Son...do you forgive me?"
Philip was not sure how to respond. "Dad, I..." Philip felt unsteady now. "...No. I don't forgive you. I can't forgive you. After all those years of abuse and neglect...it may take me longer to forgive you."
John could only nod. "I understand. Just so you know though...I love you, Philip. You and Will. I just never showed it. You're my boys, after all." John smiled a little, but that soon faded. "I just wished I let you're mother how much I loved her more often then I did."
"I know, dad. I know." Philip hugged his father.
"And yes, we are your boys."
"Damn right, you are." John remarked, as he hugged his son tighter.
"I'm so sorry, Dad. For everything."
"Me too, son." John told him. "Me too."

As John and Philip made their way to the burial site, they see Nick and Will have finished digging her grave. Will was hugging his niece, comforting her. When Penny turned her head and saw Philip, she ran over to him and hugged him. He hugged her back.
"I can't believe this..." Nick said.
They stood there in a moment of silence.
"Nick..." John told him. "If you have any more prayers for Rose...I think...now would be a good time."
"Very well. Everyone hold hands."
Everyone soon held hands. They closed their eyes...and Nick began the prayer.
"Dear Lord, I ask a favor upon thy blessing--to take this woman in your arms--to heal of her wounds and allow her into thy kingdom. Allow her to walk--to run--to smell the flowers--to be as happy as she can be, until the day comes...when we too come to thy golden gates. Let her rest peacefully now...under the guidance and wisdom you have given us all. Amen."
"Amen." They all said.
"That was wonderful, Nick. Thank you." John told him.
He gave him a welcoming nod. "Let's finish this."
Will grabbed her upper body and Nick grabbed her legs.
"NO!" Penny said.
"Penny!" Philip said.
"Don't bury her yet! Just...just let me say goodbye to Grandma. Please." She told them, sad and innocently.
They put her down for a moment as Penny knelt down beside her and hugged her tight. She cried. "Goodbye...Grandma..."
Suddenly, Rose took a deep breath as her eyes opened. They were ice blue. Penny looked at her grandmother, scared.
Nick and Will looked at her in complete shock as Philip and John's eyes widened.
"Grandma?" Rose looked at Penny and growled as she grabbed her arm.
"AHHHHH!" Penny screamed.
"PENNY!"
Philip tried to release his mother's grip on his daughter, but when he couldn't, he realized he had no choice. He quickly took his knife out and stabbed her in the head. She didn't stay down, so he stabbed her again, and then a third time. She soon let go of Penny as she fell into her father's arms, sobbing immensely.
Philip looked in horror at the guys, not knowing what they should do now.

Notes

This will probably be the last chapter I post for a few weeks, as I want to get Chapters 15-17 done, so I can edit them in case I think of some better ideas over time. And also, for any fans of my Survival Is Not An Option Series, the complete first season is being edited, remastered, and released into one large story, so look out for that. Season 2 Episode 2 will be released after Part 2 or sooner, depending on how I go about it.

So, apparently, I think there is a LIMIT on the amount of characters I can put in the character listings. I'm not sure why that is, but I will try and see if I can get the administrators to fix that.
