Through the Eyes of the Governor

Chapter 28: Good People

A/N: Hello, everybody! Welcome to Part 3! Now, before you begin reading, I just wanna say one more thing about Part 3. While Philip DOES start to descend into darkness in Part 3 (as I've mentioned earlier on), keep in mind that there is still a Part 4, so that entire transformation into the Governor will not happen in just Part 3 alone. So, with that said, please enjoy Part 3 :)

Part 3: What We Become

Philip laid there on the ground...his arms and head covering his fallen brother’s chest as he cried with his daughter beside him.
Nick had a hand on his friend’s back as he clutched Penny tight, now crying with them.
“How could they do this?” Philip asked. “Why-hehehe…” He kept sobbing...his tears now showering over the blood soaked stain on his brother’s shirt.
“Uncle Will…” Penny’s eyes teared up even more. “And Grandpa-agh-agh...hhhheeeee…” Penny clutched onto Nick’s right arm tight as he held her comfortingly.
Philip looked in the distance to his father’s body, then back to his sweet, loving daughter. He motioned Nick away from her, as he held her lovingly.
She started coughing, but Philip rubbed her back soothingly to get her to stop.
He wiped his own tears off his face with his left hand before looking back to his father’s body...and then to Will’s. “Let’s, uh—” He tried to keep from crying again. “Let’s get some shovels out here and bury them. We’ll mourn for them, but it might be...a lot less painful if them in the ground first.”
“Do you need any help?” Penny asked sweetly, yet tearfully.
“No, pumpkin. It’s okay. Nick and I can take care of it. Why don’t...we get you something to eat and we’ll be inside in a little bit to talk about all of...this…” Philip caught his breath on the last word.
“Okay…” She said, as they went back to the house.
When they passed by John’s body, Penny wanted to run to his side, but Philip stopped her and covered her eyes, due to the bullet from Keith's gun taking off most of his forehead.
Philip looked at his father’s body in complete and utter horror, being able to only look for a few seconds before having to look away from the gruesome and tragic scene.
As soon as Penny got in the house, she wanted to go into the kitchen.
However, Philip remembered something and told Penny to stay there by the front door. Philip and Nick saw the back door in the kitchen was still open and the pool of blood forming on the floor in front of it. They looked outside and saw the three men they shot in the legs; two of them dead from blood loss, and the other just about there.
Philip reached down and checked his pulse. “He’s still alive...but barely.” He pulled his knife. He had picked up a pistol from one of Keith's men, but didn’t want Penny to hear the gunshot.
He looked at Nick. “Do you wanna do it? Being a priest an’ all, it seems that you should be the one to put this man out of his misery.” Philip told him, his voice seemingly gone now from the screaming and sobbing earlier.
Nick took the knife...hesitantly. “I don’t...I don’t know if I should. After what this man and his group tried to do…”
“There’s a reason we only aimed for their legs, Nick. Even in that moment. We weren’t trying to make them suffer. We were trying to give them a chance to live. I don’t even know why now…” Philip trailed off.
“Because we’re good people." Nick told him. "We are. It doesn’t seem like it after what we just did, but...at the end of the day...I think we always will be. And I think...we BOTH think...that everyone deserves a second chance. And maybe in the back of our minds, we thought these men may have only followed Keith out of fear.”
“But who really knows?” Philip confessed. “After what just happened...I’m not sure if I really know anything anymore…” Philip took the knife from Nick’s hand, wanting to get this over with.
Nick gently took it back. He crouched down above the barely breathing man, each minute bringing him closer to death. “May God have mercy on your soul…” Nick said...almost solemnly...before closing his eyes and driving the knife as hard as he possibly could into the man’s skull. He quickly pulled the knife out, sitting alongside the man’s body. He wiped some sweat off his forehead with his bloodied thumb, unknowingly wiping a bit of blood on his forehead. He took a few breaths, trying to pull himself together, tears forming in his eyes. He looked up at his dear friend. “Shit, man…” He tried to turn away as he sobbed a little.
Philip quickly reached out his hand.
Nick accepted it and Philip pulled him back up, embracing him. “It’ll be alright Nick. It will be...Somehow.” He patted his friend’s back. “We’ll dig the graves, talk with Penny about this for a good...long while…” Now it was Philip who had to keep himself from crying. “And we’ll okay. We’ll be okay…” He repeated.
Nick nodded, wiping the blood and sweat off his forehead.
They walked back into the house, closing the door. Nick then wiped up the pool of blood by the door. They noticed Penny was still waiting by the front door, her beloved Sparkles now resting in her arms cutely.
Philip smiled a little at that.
Two of the most adorable babies on the planet.
Philip pulled some bread out of the freezer. “While we wait for that to thaw, we’ll pick some fruit and make small salads with them.”
“Lots of grapes and strawberries, please.” Penny requested kindly. “And I can help with THAT, right?”
“Of course you can.” Philip told her. Then, he looked out the window towards all the bodies. “After we, um…” Philip nudged his head towards the windows. “...dig the graves.”
Penny nodded slowly. “Okay…”
Philip crouched down to his daughter’s height. “I know after all of that, you’re probably starving. And that’s alright. It’s natural. But don’t worry about it. honey. With Nick helping me, it shouldn’t take too long, okay?” He gently wiped a falling tear from her face with his thumb.
She smiled a bit for her dad. “Okay.”
“That’s my girl.” He hugged her tight.
“We’ll be back in a little while.” He said before kissing her cheek, standing up and heading out the front door,
Nick was at the entrance, looking back at sweet, little Penny. He opened his mouth to say something...but could not think of anything.
Penny tried to smile for him. She knew he was trying at least, but she could not manage to form one.
As Nick left to help Philip, Penny went upstairs and placed Sparkles in her room. She needed to use the bathroom, so she went downstairs. She would have gone to the upstairs one, but Philip placed a silly picture of him and Will as kids with their mother, Rose, in there. Penny had told her dad to put it in there to help her (when she goes in there to cry sometimes) remember the good times she’s had with them and to help remind her that she still has more fond memories to make. But she didn’t want to look at that picture today. She just was not ready yet.
As Philip and Nick were heading to the shed...a faint breathing sound began to rise...in the throat of one of Keith’s dead soldiers in the corn field...as did with the other men not shot in the head. They opened their eyes...as they started to groan.
“I don’t get why they didn’t just build a damn tool shed, instead of putting all the tools in the back of the barn." Philip said. "Makes all the shovels and trowels smell like—”
“SHIT!” Nick exclaimed, as he had opened the door and an infected was munching on the man Will did not kill in the barn earlier, his guts now pouring out of him.
It turned to them, slowly standing up and growling. Suddenly, it lunged itself at Philip.
Philip held onto its arms as it tried to bite him before shoving it against the wall and stabbing it. He pulled his knife out of its head and it fell to the ground.
More of Keith’s fallen men started to rise from the spot in which each of them had passed...staring at the barn...and slowly making their way towards it.
Nick stared at Philip and the infected wide eyed. “HOW THE HELL DID AN INFECTED GET IN HERE?!”
Philip did not know how to answer that. “I-I don’t know.” Philip tried to take in deep breaths, trying to get his racing mind to calm down, along with his racing heart. “Alright. Now, I think the best thing to do is to check and see if there are anymore…Nick?”
Nick's eyes widened even further when looking behind Philip. He backed into the door and held up his pistol. “Christ! LOOK BEHIND YOU!”
Philip did just that and saw nearly a dozen infected coming towards them. Philip looked on in horror at all of them. He quickly crouched down and looked in the man’s pockets for a weapon.
Nothing. Shit.
“Is there another knife back there?”
Nick looked around on the ground of the barn and saw one. He scrambled to pick it up. as the dead closed in on them.
“Shoot a few of them, if they get bunched up together on you. Knife ‘em, if you can, to save some bullets.” Philip instructed. “You ready?”
Nick shrugged. “As ready as I’ll ever be, I guess.”
“Alright then.” Philip grabbed the right shoulder of the nearest one, putting some leverage into it, as he stabbed it in the head.
Nick did the same thing, as an infected approached him.
They kept going, hoping this was all the infected they had to deal with.
As the men were fighting, a lone infected crept out of the corn fields...going near the house. With the door still open from when Philip and Nick left, it suddenly heard a flushing sound from the bathroom and the bathroom door opening. Curious, it made its way up the steps.
Philip had stabbed three of them in the head and Nick had stabbed two in the head.
As Philip was dealing with two of them, he nearly tripped on a body behind him, tumbling hard against the barn door, as the two infected grabbed onto him. He held them back by grabbing them by their decaying throats, but it would not stop them forever.
The lone infected went up the steps and peered inside. When it noticed Penny coming out of the bathroom, it growled, making its way towards her.
“AAAHHHH!!!” Penny screamed. She quickly made her way upstairs. As she was making her way to her room at the end of the hall; however, she tripped on one of Sparkles’ toys that he was playing with earlier, tripping and banging her left knee hard on the wooden floor. She sat there for a moment, clutching her knee in pain.
“Ooowww…” She groaned in pain.
Just then, the infected came up the stairs.
She screamed once again, trying to get up and get to her room. She was moving much slower now, but she was still able to move away from it. She was almost to her room, but saw it reach its arms out to grab her. She got just out of its grasp, but quickly fell on her butt, avoiding nearly getting scratched by the infected. She tried to get up and get away from it. She kicked its left knee hard to buy her some time and it fell to the floor. As she tried to get away though, it grabbed her ankle.
“AAAHHH!!! NO!!!!” She screamed, as she tried to crawl to the room at the end of the hall. She kicked it in its face hard over and over again. When it finally lost its grip on her, she managed to get into her room. She sighed thankfully, as she leaned against the door...Then a few moments later...she felt the knob start to turn. She looked up at the knob in horror..forgetting in the heat of the moment that there was no lock on the door...
As their teeth came closer to his neck, Philip grunted loudly, trying to pull the two monsters away from him.
Their mouths opened wide, as they finally got close enough to bite him…
BANG!
BANG!

The two infected fell to the ground, motionless.
Nick shook his head and sighed at the carnage. “I think we got ‘em all.’” He stated.
“I think so too. Maybe we should—”
“DADDY!!!! HELP!!!!!” Penny screamed from her room.
“PENNY!!!” Philip sprinted as fast as he possibly could towards the house, running up the steps and into the house.
Nick followed suit, but not before getting grabbed by his ankle by the latino man Will had killed in the barn earlier. He nearly fell to the ground, quickly pulling his leg away from the infected’s mouth.
BANG!
Its forehead exploded.
Nick quickly got back up and sprinted towards the house.
Philip looked around, hearing the screaming from upstairs.
Penny had managed to keep the dead man from entering the room by putting her back against the door, pushing as hard as she could against it. Though it was not working like she had hoped, as it came closer and closer to opening the door, nearly getting its left arm inside to grab her.
“DADDY, PLEASE!!!!” She started crying, as it got closer to coming inside. She screamed one final time, before feeling the pressure on the door cease and loud bangs on the floor.
Philip had grabbed the infected, pulling its arm away from the door.
It tried to pounce on him, but he angrily threw it against the wall, stabbing it in the head.
He fell to the ground and sighed in relief, noticing Nick had finally come.
“Well you sure took your sweet time, didn’t you, Nick?” He asked, a bit angry at him.
“I’m sorry! One of those things had grabbed my ankle. It was that one in the barn getting munched on earlier.”
Philip shook his head in understanding, his anger subsiding. “Are you okay though?”
Nick nodded. “Yeah…”
“That’s good.” Philip looked at the door.
Penny opened it slowly, noticing the infected was dead and her father sitting down near it with Nick. She quickly embraced her father. “Oh, Daddy!” She hugged him tight, sobbing uncontrollably.
He hugged her back just as tight, kissing her forehead lovingly. “It’s okay, honey. Everything’s okay now.”
Nick sat down beside them, placing a hand on his friend’s shoulder comfortingly.
They each sat there quiet for a while...just trying to calm their minds of everything that had happened.
“...We’ll talk about all of this later.” Philip told them. “For now, let’s just clean up and eat some lunch.”
“Daddy...my knee…” Penny’s knee had become quite red, a small crack of blood oozing out of it too, right in the center.
Philip kissed her forehead. “We’ll get you fixed right up. C’mon.” Philip gently lifted his daughter up, holding her in his arms, as the trio went down stairs. After placing her in the living room, and using some peroxide on her knee, he placed a band-aid over it.
Penny tried to keep the pain from the peroxide in, but soon felt relieved when it subsided quickly.
“There we go. All better.” Philip smiled at her lightly.
Nick quickly killed the two infected near the kitchen door leading outside, and then placed Penny gently in the kitchen after closing the door.
As he was doing that, Philip started putting their medical supplies away. He then decided to return to the kitchen to get his daughter something to eat. But as he was doing that, he noticed one last body out there, barely moving. He groaned in annoyance.
Can’t we just relax today? Can’t we just take some time and grieve together without all of THIS SHIT happening?!?!
He made his way outside, looking at the body, as it began to stir.
Nick noticed his friend go outside, so he decided to follow him. “I’ll be right back, Penny.”
“Okay, Nick.” She sat in her chair comfortably, still overcome by the shock of everything that’s happened today.
“You okay, Philip?” Nick asked him.
Philip pointed to the body in the distance with his knife before looking back at Nick. “There’s only one infected left. Just wanna get rid of it, that’s all.” Philip said, looking at his friend, as they approached it.
“Got it. Well, come back inside after…” Nick’s jaw began to drop...slowly…”Oh my god...noooo…”
Philip his turned his head towards the body...and his jaw dropped too.
The infected that stood up was Will. His eyes were...different now.
Ice blue...just like our mother’s had been when she had turned...
He looked at his brother.
Will...not wanting to say “hi” or “I miss you”...or even...“I love you”...only had a desire to feed on his brother...wanting to tear his flesh away from him.
Philip started to cry again, this time unable to stop himself. “Will…”
His brother...whom he had loved so very much...slowly made his way towards him. He took his time...as his food seemed to be frozen in place
Nick stood frozen for a moment, unable to do anything. His hand started to shake..slowly pulling out his pistol. He choked up a little, pulling the hammer back on the gun.
“NO.” Philip told him. “It has to be me...It just...It has to be…”
Nick nodded, tears in his eyes, handing his friend the gun.
Philip aimed at his brother’s head. His hand shook, as he tried to pull the trigger...
His dead, flesh and blood, little brother came closer to him.
“C’mon, Philip…” Nick urged him, noticing Will was coming too close.
Philip held the gun up, still unable to do it.
“Do it, Philip.” Nick begged.
Philip kept the gun pointed at Will’s head. He turned his head away and close his eyes. “I’m sorry, Will...I’m sorry…”
Will started to growl, only ten feet away now and getting closer. He growled loudly.
“DO IT!!!”
BANG!
Philip’s dear brother fell to the ground instantly.
Philip turned his head back to Will. He knelted down by his side again, now pained by the bullet hole he had no choice, but to put into his baby brother's head.
Will...
Philip started to sob all over again, this time falling on his back to the ground beside his brother, sobbing harder than he ever has.
Penny sat in the kitchen and had heard the gunshot, thinking it was only another infected her dad had shot. She sat there quietly, now hearing her father and Nick weeping, unsure of what had actually happened.

So, apparently, I think there is a LIMIT on the amount of characters I can put in the character listings. I'm not sure why that is, but I will try and see if I can get the administrators to fix that.
