Through the Eyes of the Governor

Chapter 33: Wrongdoings

Please help me, man. C’mon…” The man pleaded with Philip.
He looked back to his group, unsure.
“Tell him we need to go and we need to go NOW.” Carlito whispered to Nick.
Nick nodded and ran back to Philip. “What’s the pro—holy SHIT.” He stared down at the stranger in shock, his stare focused on the man’s injured arm. “We gotta help this man.” Nick stated, waving for Carlito to come over quick. He turned back to Philip...and looked at him worriedly. “Philip?”
Philip did not hear him, as he looked down at the man...remembering Cher...and Sonny. He remembered Will getting shot...the bang echoing in his ears.
BANG!
WILL!!!
Letting those kids in the barn live…
“I think there’s good in these kids. We just have to let them show it.”

“Philip!”
Keith shooting my father…
BANG!
“PHILIP!” Nick said in his ear.
He came back to reality and looked back down at the stranger.
“Please, ya guys...Ya can’t leave me like this, man. C’mon…” He pleaded some more.
Philip looked around and saw the dead heading towards them and they were closing in fast. He thought it over for a quick second before shaking his head. “Dammit…” He quickly grabbed the man and scooped one arm over his shoulder. “Help me get him up.”
Nick did so and the two got him up.
Carlito rushed over with Penny as fast as he could. “What the hell are you guys doing?? We need to get out of—” Carlito eyed the man in surprise and noticed his poor condition. “Jesus!” He said. He looked behind them and saw the infected were getting closer and closer. “Alright. We can help him. But we gotta move FAST! Let’s go!!”

The five of them quickly moved through the area into the next safe spot, stopping to rest for a moment.
Carlito inspected the poor man’s wound and noticed that he was not moving.
“Is he alright?” Penny asked concerned.
Carlito checked his pulse for a few moments. “He’s fine. He’s just unconscious. He does; however, look to be in pretty bad shape.” He glanced back at the rest of the group. “My people have a doctor who can help him. But we can’t afford to waste any time or he could die.”
“Well, how are we supposed to get him there quickly?” Nick questioned. “He’s not exactly scrawny, ya know. And we can’t carry him all the way there, can we? It just seems risky with all the infected out there, that’s all.”
“I was hoping one of you could carry him in a fireman’s carry, until we get there.”
“I’m not strong enough to that, if we need to run though.” Nick admitted.
“Neither am I. There’s gotta be another way.” Philip stated.
“Hmm…” Carlito tried to think of a solution. After a few moments, he had one. “If we could have one man hold him by his shoulders and another grab him by his ankles, we could carry him that way, while the final man protects Penny and covers us...and then we might be able to get out of this mess in one piece.”
“Alrightee then.” Philip stated. "I think between me and Nick, I’m a better shot. Do you want me to cover our backs?”
“I can shoot just fine.” Carlito told him. “But if you wanna stay by your little girl’s side and cover us, that’s perfectly fine.” Just then, he started hearing the groans outside. “We have no time to lose. Uh—Nick, is it?”
“Yeah.” He answered.
“I’ve got his shoulders.” Carlito said, placing his arms under the man’s shoulders. “Grab his ankles and let’s get out of here.”
Nick quickly did so and the group went outside, making their way to another safe house that was part of Carlito’s route.
They were rather slow, but went as fast as they could, barely outrunning the dead.
“HURRY!” Philip told them. He saw an infected getting too close to them, trying to rip into the unconscious man’s stomach.
BANG!
He shot it quickly. “C’MON!” He yelled over the loud groans of the dead.
After they had a few close calls, they finally made it to the safe house.
Nick and Carlito dropped the man gently on a couch and took a few deep breaths.
“How many more places are there...before we actually...get there?” Nick asked Carlito.
“Four.” He answered, as he tried to catch his breath. “I usually don’t go out that far...like I had. But I was…also looking for more paths to extend...the route a bit further. So far, no such luck.” He grabbed a water bottle he hid away in a cabinet and drank some water before letting the three of his friends have the rest. “I always keep a bit of water and food at each stop, in case I’m either exhausted or get trapped for a while and need some food and water.” He explained.
“That’s very smart.” Philip replied.
“Thank you.” He looked back down at the man, noticing how pale he was looking now. “We’ll have to switch spots as we got through the route. Philip, you help Nick carry him this time, and then the next time, Nick will cover us, and so forth.”
“Okay then.”
They grabbed the man once again and headed out.
After getting through the four safe spots with some very close calls, they kept walking to their destination.
“Here we are.” Carlito said.
It was a closed-off apartment with a gate in the back.
“Thank god…” Nick said, exhausted.
“You can rest easy now, my friend.” Carlito told him. “DIEGO!” He called out. The area had buildings covering both sides, and multiple gates covering their back (that are now closed, thanks to Carlito), so infected were not a concern.
A young man looked at him from the rooftop.
“OPEN THE GATES. I FOUND MORE PEOPLE ON THE WAY. ONE OF THEM IS VERY INJURED, SO GET DANIEL DOWN HERE TOO!”
The young man nodded and quickly left the group’s view.
“Diego's my cousin." Carlito told them. "Just give him a little bit of time. He’s quick, but it takes a while to get all the way down here.”
The building was roughly five stories high.
After about four minutes, the young man and (presumably) the doctor rushed out. As the young man opened the gates, the doctor studied them.
His attention almost instantly went to the pale man they were holding. “Dear, God! What happened to him?”
“We’ll explain inside.” Carlito said.
After they had gone inside, Carlito and the others sat down at a table, as the doctor inspected the man in another room. “Don’t worry, you guys. Daniel is a VERY good doctor. He’ll be able to figure out the ailments that man is suffering from in NO TIME.”
A little while later, Daniel came into the kitchen they were in. “You’re all welcome to come in. He’s unconscious right now, but he’ll live.”
They all got up and followed Daniel into the poor man’s room.
“Christ...” Philip muttered.
The stranger had become even paler than before.
“It appears he passed out from blood loss and dehydration. I’ve disinfected the wounds to his arm and bandaged it. Once he wakes up, I’ll be sure to give him plenty of water.”
“Thank you, Doc.” Philip told him.
Daniel gave him a smile before talking more about his patient. “He also has a fever. Probably brought on from heat exhaustion and the wound where his hand used to be.” He placed a folded cloth soaked in cold water on his head. “We’ll give him some antibiotics too, just to be safe. At first, I thought he may have lost his hand to an infected person, but there was a cut straight through the arm bones. I’m assuming he did it himself. However, why he did it is a question we can ask at a later time. For now, it’s best that we let him rest.” He told everyone.
Philip glanced down at the injured man and looked at the patient’s face.
He’s a rough lookin’ bastard.
Then his eyes went back to the doctor before nodding and following everyone else out of the room.
As soon as they left the room, they all went to the kitchen table.
Diego and Carlito pulled the table on both ends apart to add in the extra wooden boards to make it longer for them all to sit and chat.
“That man…” Daniel said. “He was in very bad shape when you brought him in. Where did you find him exactly?” He asked worried.
“We found him on our way through the route.” Philip explained. “He was by a vehicle that crashed, but still had the taillights on. I was curious about what had happened, so I made my way over to the vehicle and saw him on the right side of it...and he was pleading for me to help him. So, we did.”
“I see.” Daniel replied. “And where are you and your people from?”
“We used to live in a small town. But then things...went bad.” Nick told them.
“We then went to my parents’ place to wait and hold out, until whatever the hell was going on would come to an end.” Philip told him. “And when that didn’t happen, we had to keep moving. We were heading here after we heard a message on the radio about the safety of Atlanta. But after the roads were blocked by cars and then hordes of infected covered the only other roads available, we had no choice but to go to a...plantation house for shelter…” Philip trailed off.
“And then what happened?” Carlito asked him softly.
Philip just shook his head. “Once we got here, we saw all the destruction. All the charred bodies, the wrecked cars and damaged buildings...all of it.” Philip glanced at Daniel. “We came in here expecting shelter, a new start...and new friends for my little girl.”
Penny remained silent. She looked down at the table and sighed quietly.
Philip looked at all three men in front of him. They looked exhausted, worn out...and just defeated. “...What the hell happened to this place?” Nick questioned.
Carlito looked to his young cousin. “Diego, do you...want to explain to these folks what happened?”
Diego nodded. “You were right about the city being safe. At first, anyway. People were coming here, evacuating cities, towns...you name it. They left everything behind for this place, man. The military guarded the perimeter of the city and for a while, everything was okay. People brought in food, fuel, water, and anything else they could to help out. But about a week after everything happened...people started getting sick. Infected people had gotten in and died overnight. Sickness spread like a wildfire after that. In just matter of hours...God...the whole city had fallen. We heard there were some who were able to escape, but not many. We had to stay, because the military started shooting those who left the city. When we tried to find alternate paths, either too much attention was being drawn to those areas, or the dead were trying to get us. So, we stayed and hid, hoping to escape once everything calmed down. And then...things got really crazy. The military men, they were...they were bombing the streets.” His eyes became filled with sorrow. “They weren’t just killing the dead, but also people just trying to escape. We don’t even know why they did it. Maybe as a last resort to protect those outside the limits of the city from the dead trying to get out...but that would have only made it worse. The explosions could be seen and heard FOR MILES AROUND most likely. If anything, that probably brought MORE of the dead to the survivors’ locations. And from everywhere outside of the city…” Diego exhaled and shook his head.
“We think we may know how it spread so fast.” Daniel stated. “It’s possible that people may have felt so depressed from the loss of friends, loved ones, etc...that they took their own lives. And they turned as a result. I saw a man get gunned down by military, only to later find him as one of the dead in the streets. However, he might have been bitten and infected before hand. I know this may be hard news to swallow...but it is possible that when you die, regardless of the cause of death...you may turn...no matter what.”
Penny started tearing up and was about to cry.
Her father held her close, as he looked back at the doctor. “We’ve...seen it happen.”
Daniel raised his eyebrows in surprise. “You have?”
“...My brother...I don’t think he was infected. But he died from injuries su…sustained in a tragedy...And then he turned.” He started to tear up himself, as Nick placed his hand on his friend’s shoulder comfortingly.
Daniel looked at him in sadness. “I’m...I’m so sorry. Truly, I am.” He glanced behind him into the room his patient was in. “It must be airborne then.” He concluded. “Whatever it is inside of us. Dormant, perhaps. And it is only after passing that it becomes active again. That’s just terrible...:” He trailed off.
“We...better get some rest." Carlito said, trying to get off this subject. "Let’s get to know each other tomorrow. For now, let’s all just relax and rest for a while. Our new friends need it more than we do...” Carlito suggested.
“Good idea.” Daniel told him. “Supper will be ready in two hours. I’ll be more than happy to wake any of you up, if you feel like resting now. You do not have to worry. Trust me. You are all safe here.”
“Thank you. This truly means a lot that you guys are willing to do this for us.” Philip shook Daniel’s hand in appreciation.
“You don’t need to thank us. We’re more than happy to do it.” Daniel smiled a little.
They all got up from the table.
“Hey, before you guys go...didn’t you say there were more people in your group, Carlito?” Nick inquired.
“Yes, but they are on a scouting mission. Looking for supplies, more people, and even checking out more paths to clear. They’re usually gone for about a day before returning and they left this morning. They should return sometime later tomorrow.” Carlito stated.
“Alright then.” Nick responded.

After dinner, three hours had passed. Penny was sleeping and Philip was looking out the window to the destroyed city. He just could not believe it.
God…
He sighed and closed his eyes. Suddenly, he heard a knock on his door. He went to the door and opened it.
It was the man they had saved earlier that day. “Mind if I come in for a little while?” He asked.
Philip turned his head to look back into his apartment and thought about Penny, who was sleeping soundly for once in a long while. “If I let you come in, can you keep your voice low? My baby’s sleeping.”
“Sure. Don’t wanna wake the little one up, now do we? I get it.” He said.
Philip opened the door and motioned him to a couch in the living room, while he sat in a chair opposite of him.
The man looked around. “This is a nice place they set ya up with.” He said impressed.
“They don’t have too many people here as of yet, so they were okay with me and my daughter taking this one.”
“Ya know, I did regain consciousness for a few moments when ya'll were carryin' me and I saw that little tyke of yers. Cute kid. What happened to the mama, if I'm not asking too much? Divorce? Or...eaten by those freaks out there?”
“...She died in a car accident...sixteen months before all of this.”
“Damn. I’m sorry for your loss.” He felt uneasy now, hoping Philip would change the subject. He hated talking about things like this. When Philip remained silent, he decided to change it himself.
“I, uh...suppose I should...thank you—for what you did. Savin’ ma life and all…”
“You don’t have to. That’s alright.” Philip told him.
“Thank god.” Merle chuckled a little. “It’s just…I’ve never thanked nobody for anythin’ before. Didn’t want to start now.”
Philip nodded. “Well, you may have to start soon. People need each other. Now more than ever.”
Merle scoffed. “Hell...you sound just like an asshole I met earlier today, preachin’ about how ‘people need each other’ and how it’s ‘us against the dead’ or some shit like that. I know how it’s supposed to be. And it IS ‘us against the dead.’ Don’t mean we always have to work together though.”
“I have to disagree with you there, friend. People need each other. That’s what’s kept me and my family going for so long. After losing so much, we’ve just had to...be there for one another. Pull each other up and just...survive together.” Philip stated.
“I get that. Bein’ there for yer family.” He paused for a moment. “...Ma mom died in a fire when I was in ma teen years. And ma daddy was a piece of shit. Always hurtin’ me...then ma baby brother when I left for the Army...just to get away from him. I never asked how bad it was for him, ma baby brother...probably should have though. But even though ma dad was always shitfaced and angry twenty-four-seven...I was always there. I was...always watchin’ out for ma baby brother. Protectin’ him from all the shit goin’ on around us...protectin’ him from dad when I could...I tried ma best.” He looked around for a moment before focusing his eyes back on Philip. “Ma baby brother’s still alive somewhere. I know he is. Ma baby brother’s tough like that. He’s part of a camp not too far away from Atlanta. Planned on gettin’ back to him, but I never did.”
“I’m sorry for what you’ve been through. Philip told him sincerely.
The man nodded in response.
Philip glanced towards his bandaged arm. “Now what...happened to your arm? Were you attacked?”
The man chuckled a bit more. “You could say that.” He studied his arm. “Nah...not by people, like you may think. Worse than that...Ma own group.” He scoffed and shook his head. “Ya see, some prick officer guy came to this rooftop me and my group were on. I was simply tryin’ to lay down the law to ma group. I don’t like takin’ orders from others, ya see. And when this...goddamn spearchucker...started givin’ me orders, I hit him. Then, I beat his ass. I told ma group they were gonna have to take orders from me from now on. To get us on the right track. But then ‘officer FRIENDLY’ as he likes to call himself, hits me with ma rifle and handcuffs me to that goddamn rooftop. By the time they got ready to leave, ol’ spearchucker drops the damn key to the handcuffs down a drain. I pleaded with the man to stay and help...but his cowardin’ ass left me there to die on that rooftop. He acted like he was sorry.” His voice turned bitter. “But I know damnwell he wasn’t. And then...after that, not wanting to die of thirst, I had to cut my damn hand off.” He explained. “I used a stove in a buildin’ nearby to cauterize the wound to keep from bleedin’ out after.”
Philip tried to think of what to say, not wanting to anger this man, assuming that he gets easily offended. “I’m...I’m sorry about them leaving you like that. And I’m sorry about you losing your hand. Can’t imagine how painful that must have been.”
“Hmph. You’re tellin’ me.” He ran his fingers over it, still feeling the pain from it. “After gettin’ out of that buildin’...I found a blue van and drove my ass outta there. I didn’t make it too far though, as you could probably tell, and I started passing out from all the blood I lost. Eventually, I couldn’t focus on the road anymore and crashed. I stumbled out the other side of that van and out the door, not giving a shit about leaving the van on. And that’s when ya found me. Thirsty, exhausted, bleedin’ out...that ain’t no way to die…” He coughed a little and looked at the clock on the wall.
“Guess I should let ya get some shut-eye.” He stood up and made his way to the door before turning back to Philip. “And, uh, like I said...ya know.”
“Right.” Philip responded.
He looked at Philip curiously. “What’s your name, by the way? Met preacher boy earlier when I tried to find ya, but he never told me ya name.”
“It’s Philip.” He put his hand out. “Philip Blake.”
He looked at Philip’s hand and shook it. “Merle Dixon.” With that, Merle left and went back to his room to sleep.
Philip turned off the lights and looked outside his window to the fallen city once more, his gaze focused on it for the longest time...
What the hell are we gonna do now?

Notes

I hope you guys really enjoyed that chapter and I want to say thank you guys SO MUCH for all the views that this story has gotten within recent months. I was going to mention this when it happened (I kept forgetting to), but when we reach 7,500 views, we came THREE-FOURTHS of the way to my new goal of 10,000 views. Now almost reaching 8,000 views, and with Part 4 still on the way, AND not even being half way through this part yet (as far as releases go), I am VERY confident that we will reach that goal! I'm not sure if I will do a FINAL goal of 15,000 views when Part 4 comes out, but we'll just have to see. If you really like this story, recommend it to your Walking Dead-loving friends, because even people who absolutely HATE the Governor have told me on social media that they completely and utterly LOVE this story!
Thanks for reading and I will see you guys later. Bye-bye!

So, apparently, I think there is a LIMIT on the amount of characters I can put in the character listings. I'm not sure why that is, but I will try and see if I can get the administrators to fix that.
