This Isn't Our World Anymore

Ring Around The Rosie

Rain poured violently, thunder could be heard in the sky as Carrie sat with her arms around her legs in the dark, back against a tree; alone. Crying silently with her face down. She was covered in blood and dirt. Barely recognizable. Her blonde hair was now dark brown; with streaks of thick blood mixed in. She smelled rancid and looked ill.

She looked up as her tears streamed down her face and stared into the clear, dark sky.

"Is this how it's supposed to be?" She whispered to herself.

The rain continued to pour and she looked back down once again. The sound of numerous lurkers approaching could be heard throughout the forest that stood behind her. The highway was a short distance from her; It almost looked as if it was glowing to Carrie. She smiled and slowly wiped a tear from her eye as her face broke down.

-----

"Do you really think we'll be able to find them..?" asked Marcus. He stood leaned up against a tree; smoking a cigarette. Carrie looked at him with a glare on her face.

"We will." She replied, sternly.

"I know we will."

"All i'm saying is... They got out of there real quick. like a good day's worth of a head start. We're also on foot." Marcus replied.

"Now; Don't get me wrong, i'm all for optimism but you really shouldn't get your hopes up."

Carrie angrily stormed off. She walked up a small medium and onto the highway. She looked around and all she saw was flat land and dirt; everywhere.

"Gross." She whispered to herself.

She could see a small group of what looked like lurkers in the distance on the other side of the highway. Marcus slowly but calmly walked up behind her.

"We should keep moving then eh?" He said kindly. She turned and looked at him. He smiled but his gaze drifted to the herd which was starting to head in their direction.

"Okay." Carrie replied. The two of them slowly turned and continued down the highway towards Washington.

-----

Carrie and Marcus slowly walked down the highway, The sun was beginning to go red and lower in the sky. Carrie sighed as she stared at the continuing highway ahead. The land all still laid flat around the two. Small patches of green trees could be seen on the side of the highway behind endless; large barbed wire fences.

The two reached a small patch of trees after walking a fair distance down the road. Carrie leaned against a large tree and Marcus stood in place; his light brown hair was shining in the setting sun to his back. He pulled out a small black case and opened it; pulling out a small cigarette and lighting it with a purple bic lighter from his right pocket.

"We're gonna' need to find a place to rest for the night." Marcus said, turning to Carrie. He took a large puff of his cigarette.

"We should keep moving. I'm not going to sleep tonight. I want to cover as much ground as possible. Besides; there's really nothing out here and all i've seen since we left the camp is flat land and small clusters of lurkers everywhere. It's really bad to be out here. We need to keep going and see if we can find a car. It's safer. That's what my sister would do. I wouldn't be surprised if she's already found a car and is coming back to get me right this minute." Carrie replied; her tone was hopeful. She truly believed Serena was okay and that if her and Marcus continued in the direction of Washington, they would reunite with her again. Possibly even the others.

"You really believe that?" Marcus asked, he sounded tired. He stared at a small group of lurkers in the distance while he smoked.

"I do." She replied.

"Let's get going. Those lurkers look like they've seen us." Marcus replied; he dropped his smoke and turned back towards the highway. He began walking. Carrie followed.

------

The two kept walking for hours. As night crept in and the sun disappeared, Marcus and Carrie were still out in the open, slowly dragging down the highway. Marcus could see a small shape of what looked like a house up the highway a few more blocks.

"You see that?" He asked, looking at Carrie. He pointed in the direction of the shape.

"You think it's a house??" She asked; sounding happy.

"Maybe Serena's there! We gotta' go check it out!" She said again.

The two began running.

As the two of them reached the figure it turned out they had been right; it was a small brown house.

"SERENA?!" Carrie called out, she faced the house and continued calling out for her sister.

Marcus grabbed Carrie by the arm and dragged her from the highway to the side of the barbed fence, they were now out of view of the house. A cluster of tall trees stood behind the fence, hiding the home.

"You can't be yelling like that! The lurkers could hear you!" Marcus said, letting go of Carrie's arm. He sounded scared.

"I'm sorry.." She replied, rubbing her wrist. Tears welled up in her eyes but she fought them back. She wanted to appear strong.

"We should check the place out, see if it's safe. I'll go in through the front door, I've got my pistol so just stay close behind me and have yours ready." Marcus said, he looked into the small group of trees. They clustered together up until the back of the house. He could see what looked like a white picket fence that fenced off a small backyard.

"It doesn't look like there are any lurker's around here." Carrie replied. She was looking around the entire area and none could be seen at all.

"So?" Marcus said. He was loading his gun.

"We were seeing them all day, now we get closer to what must be a town and now there are none? Is that weird?" She was getting a sinking feeling in her stomach.

"So what." Marcus replied. He finished loading his pistol.

Carrie went silent. She looked down at her feet.

"Come on, Let's get this done." Marcus said, gesturing for Carrie to follow his lead.

The two walked through the trees and towards the backyard. They ducked low and ran towards the white fence; using it as a place to hide.

The house was small. It's wooden outside was rotting away, strips and remnants of an old bad paint job could be seen all over the home. The windows were dark and the home was creaking in the light breeze.

"Maybe we should just knock." Carrie whispered; her voice was getting slightly shaky.

Marcus turned around to her and glared, handing her a loaded pistol.

"This is the way things are now. We need to always be prepared for anything. We can't just go knocking and getting ourselves killed. You either take what you want or you lose all you got; and right now the only thing that matters is us. We gotta' stay alive and if that means taking this place from people, we should do it. You know i'm right." He said to her.

"If shit goes south I need you to have my back. You can do that can't you?"

Carrie was silent, she thought for a moment before she spoke.

"Okay... yea." She said, she seemed unsure of the whole situation at this point.

"Good, let's get shit done." He said, turning back around towards the house.

They ducked down and slowly crept up to the front. They both stayed by the left of the house and peeked around the corner. The door was right in their view.

"Okay; stay here by this side and i'm gonna' kick the door down. Then we'll go in. Be ready for anything." Marcus said to Carrie.

She nodded. Though her expression was fearful. Was she really ready to trust this guy that had at one point had a piece of glass to her throat? She wondered to herself.

"Here goes.." Marcus slowly walked up to the door.

He gave it one good kick and it hit the ground with a slam. He looked inside the dark house.

"What the fuck..?"

"OH SHIT!!" Marcus screamed.

Carrie's eyes widened as lurkers began pouring out of the home.

Marcus backed up quickly.

About 10 or more lurkers came out of the house and were coming at Marcus.

He lifted his pistol and shot two in the chest. He continued backing up as the lurkers continued coming for his flesh.

"FUCK! BITCH DO SOMETHING!" He yelled at Carrie who'm was standing in place; terrified.

She was so scared she didn't know what to do.

Marcus kept backing up but tripped on a large rock, causing him to collapse backwards.

The lurkers were very close now.

He turned and looked at Carrie.

"Help me please! WHAT THE FUC-"

One lurker tumbled down on top of Marcus and took a bite out of his wrist.

The other lurkers were almost in arm's reach.

"HELP MEEE!!" Marcus was screaming hysterically. Another lurker tumbled down and began chewing on his leg.

Carries was crying hysterically. Too scared to do anything.

She looked at Marcus one last time before looking away and running onto the highway.

She sobbed as Marcus's cries rang through the area.

Turning back towards the direction of Washington she began running.

--------

Carrie stumbled down the highway. She was completely unstable.

Images of Ashton being shot and Marcus's body being ripped up shot through her mind. She knew she was wrong for leaving Marcus but she had been so afraid.

Her mind was racing as she walked down the road.

"Why does everybody have to die." She said aloud; sobbing.

Carrie looked at the highway and stopped in her tracks.

She shivered as rain fell from the night sky and began crying even harder.

As the light fog from the rain was disappearing around her, huge herd's of lurkers could be seen coming for her from all directions.

Carried screamed out loud and chose to run for it.

She shoved through the herd that was directly in front of her. They all grabbed at her.

One lurker grabbed a hold of her backpack and she was pulled to the ground. She cried when her head smacked against the pavement and a lurker took it's first bite into the flesh of her leg.

She screamed at the top of her lungs and used her right leg to kick the guy off. She removed her backpack and began crawling.

-------

Carrie managed to crawl her way out of the herd and dragged herself off the highway and over to another small forest; where she leaned herself up against a tree.

Her leg was ripped to shreds. She was hysterical.

Blood poured from her leg as she sat very still. All alone because of her choices. She believed everything was a result of her poor choices in this world.

-------

She looked up as her tears streamed down her face and stared into the clear, dark sky.

"Is this how it's supposed to be?" She whispered to herself.

The rain continued to pour and she looked back down once again. The sound of numerous lurkers approaching could be heard throughout the forest that stood behind her. The highway was a short distance from her; It almost looked as if it was glowing to Carrie. She smiled and slowly wiped a tear from her eye as her face broke down.
