You Are The Wilderness - The Walking Dead Fanfiction

Chapter 25 - No More Kids Stuff

Kiara' POV

After our little briefing in Hershel's cell, everybody scattered to start with their chores. Me, Rick, Carol, T-dog and Daryl were currently moving all our vehicles inside the prison so we can have them ready.

“Ok, let's get the other car in. We park 'em in the west entry of the yard,” Rick instructed.
“After that we need to load up these corpses so we can burn them.”

“Gonna be a looong day,” T-dog toned. Indeed it is.

“Where's Glenn and Maggie? We could use some help,” Carol suggested making me chuckle under my breath.

“They're setting up in the guard tower,” I answered.

“For two hours?” Rick asked incredulously.

“Glenn!!!” Daryl yelled, making me jump. “Maggie!!!”

After a few moments of rustling we were greeted by shirtless Glenn buckling his belt back yelling: “Heyy! What's up guys?”

Everybody was chuckling heartily at the awkward situation we put the young couple in and then Daryl made things even more awkward and yelled “You comin'?!” making everybody laughing out loud.

“What?” Glenn yelled back, trying to act like nothing's been happening up there.

“You comin'?” Daryl repeated his question, teasing the poor guy even more. “C'mon, we could use a hand!”

“Yeah, we'll… we'll be right down!” Glenn hollered stuttering and nearly tripping over himself, further adding to our amusement. That was cut short though by T-dog alerting us to the presence of Axel and Oscar.

The smile on Rick's face disappeared as if it has never been there and he gestured for us to follow him saying: “Come with me.” I pulled out my sword and immediately joined him followed by Daryl and T-dog.

“That's close enough,” Rick growled. “We had an agreement.”

“Please mister,” Axel pleaded just as Glenn and Maggie came out of the guard tower. “We know that. We made a deal… but you gotta understand… we can't live in that place another minute, you follow me? All the bodies… people we knew… blood, brains everywhere… there's ghosts!”

“Why don't you move the bodies out?” Daryl asked.

“You should be burning them,” T-dog added.

“We tried!” Axel continued. “We did.”

“The fence is down on the far side of prison,” Oscar joined. “Every time we drag a body out those things just… line up. We drop the body out and just run back inside.”

“Look!” Axel started, moving towards Rick making me instinctively tighten my grip on my sword. “We had nothing to do with Thomas and Andrew. Nothing! You're trying to prove a point, you proved it bro! We do whatever it takes to be part of your group just please! Please! Don't make us live in that place.”

“Our deal is non-negotiable,” Rick shot Axel down. “You either live in your cellblock, or you leave.”

“I told you this was a waste of time,” Oscar said solemnly. “They ain't no different than the pricks who shot up our boys. You know how many friend's corpses we had to drag out this week? Just threw 'em out like… These were good guys! Good guys who had our backs against the really bad dudes in the joint… like Thomas and Andrew. Now we've all made mistakes to get in here chief and I´m not gonna pretend to be a saint but believe me… we've paid our due… enough that we would rather hit that road than go back to that shithole.”

We all started looking around at each other considering Oscar's words, and frankly I almost felt sorry for those guys, but Rick and Daryl seemed determined to keep the inmates away from our people and soon enough Daryl was locking them out in the outer fence. We were standing behind the bus talking through our options.

“Are you serious?” Rick asked incredulously. “You want them living in a cellblock next to you? They'll just be waitin' for a chance to grab our weapons. You wanna go back to sleeping with one eye open?”

“I never stopped,” T-dog countered. “Bring them into the fold. If we send them packing, we might as well execute them ourselves.”

“I don't know, Axel seems a little unstable,” Glenn chimed in.

“After all we've been through, we fought so hard for this. What if they decide to take it?” Carol said.

“What if they don't?” I said making them looking at me incredulously. “I mean, I'm not saying we should let them live alongside of us, but locking them in and forcing them to stay here may not be the best solution either. I think we should let them hit the road.”

“It's been just us for so long,” Maggie started. “They're strangers. It feels weird all of a sudden to have other people around.”

“You brought us in,” T-dog argued.

“Yeah, but you turned up with a shot boy in your arms, you didn't give us a choice,” Maggie
countered.

“They can't even kill Walkers,” Glenn added.

“Yeah, but they can learn,” I said. “Might as well… I mean, even if we send them out on the road, they won't survive without knowing how to do it.”

“They're convicts, bottom line,” Carol shot me down.

“Those two might actually have less blood on their hands than we do,” T-dog countered again.

“I get guys like this,” Daryl joined. “Hell I grew up with them. They're degenerates but they ain't psychos. I could've been there just as easy as I'm out here with you guys.”

“So you're with me?” T-dog asked.

“Hell no!” Daryl shot him down. “Let 'em take their chances out on the road… just like we did.”

T-dog opened his mouth to argue again but Rick beat him to it. “When I was a rookie I arrested this kid… nineteen years old… wanted for stabbing his girlfriend. The kid blubbered like a baby during the interrogation, during the trial… suckered the jury. It was dropped due insufficient evidence and then two weeks later, he shot another girl… We've been through too much. Our deal with them stands.”

That was the end of discussion and we all proceeded with our chores. Me, Maggie, Carol and T-dog started to move the cars to the upper yard and get them ready for a quick escape if need be and I was planning to set up some supplies for Axel and Oscar while Rick, Glenn and Daryl were on corpse-burning duty.

We were parking the cars in the upper yard according to Rick's instructions while they were outside gathering firewood when the door to our cellblock opened and Lori, Beth, Carl stepped out followed by Hershel walking with the crutches. The sight of him, strolling the upper yard like a pro made me so happy and I wasn't the only one.

“You cleared all those bodies out?” Hershel toned appreciatively.

“We did indeed,” I said walking towards him and patting him on the shoulder.

“It's startin' to look like a place we could really live in,” he smiled and looked around.

“Hey, you watch your step,” Lori warned him. “Last thing we need is you falling.”

“Don't worry about me,” Hershel countered and proceeded with his walk.

“I guess it's true that doctors make the worst patients,” I joked making Hershel giving me a playfully scolding look.

“Ready to race Hershel?” Carl joined.

“You give me another day, I'll take you home,” Hershel joked. I laughed and looked down towards water catching Rick's gaze. I couldn't help but smile. It's been over a year and he still managed to make me giddy like a little schoolgirl.

The peaceful moment was interrupted by Carl shouting “Walkers!” I turned around and saw
over a dozen of them making their way towards us and more and more was coming. I immediately pulled out my gun along with others and started to kill them but there were too many. I grabbed Lori and Carl and headed inside the cellblock closely followed by Maggie while Hershel and Beth ran to the other side into one of the fenced corridors that was Walker-free but I lost sight of Carol and T-dog.

We ran inside our cellblock to find it overrun with more Walkers so we had to run through the other door that led to series of corridors. We were walking around for quite long when the alarms started going off rousing every single Walker inside prison walls. We were turning yet one another corner when Lori had to stop and lean against the wall, moaning in pain.

“What's going on?” I asked holding my katana at ready while Maggie rushed to help her.

“Something's not right,” Lori panted out.

“Were you bit?” Carl asked with panic in his voice.

“No, no, no,” she managed to murmur. “I think the baby's coming.”

"Oh god,” was all I could muster up at that moment. The baby couldn't have possibly pick worse time to come to this world. Oh shit, more Walkers… I let Carl lead the way while Maggie was supporting Lori and I was covering their backs.

We ended up in a boiler room, hoping we could wait the worst out and return to our cellblock in time to deliver the baby but I had a bad feeling that would not be the case. Lori's contractions were becoming fairly regular.

“What are those alarms,” she asked pacing nervously and panting.

“Don't worry about it,” Maggie said weakly trying to comfort her.

“Noise attracts them!” Carl cried.

“Doesn't matter, we're safe here, as long as we keep it quiet,” I said.

“Lori, let's lay you down,” Maggie suggested but Lori shot her down saying the baby's coming now.

“Well we have to go back to our cellblock and have Hershel help…” Carl started but Maggie shot them down.

“No, we can't risk getting caught out there,” she said. “You're gonna need to give birth to this baby here.”

“Great,” Lori deadpanned and started panting louder and louder.

“What's she doing? Can't she breathe?” Carl asked all panicked again.

“She's fine. Let's take your pants down and see how dilated you are,” I said and Maggie started to pull Lori's jeans down and helping her down on the floor. “Carl, Maggie and I are gonna need your help birthing your brother or sister, are you up for it?”

The boy didn't say anything but his face looked determined, even if a little bit scared. “Do you know how?” he finally asked hovering over us.

“My mom taught me the basics and Hershel gave me few pointers as well but this is my first time,” I said looking down and trying to assess the situation.

“Yeah, dad taught me too, but I've never done it before,” Maggie joined.

“I can't tell,” I said. “But I don't think you're fully dilated yet.”

“I gotta push,” Lori said so Maggie and I helped her up. She tried to push few times but something went wrong and her piercing screams ringed through the boiler room and there was blood. We laid her back down, she was already so exhausted.

“Mom look at me, keep your eyes open!” Carl pleaded.

“We gotta get you back to dad,” Maggie said.

“The baby won't survive that long,” I quipped solemnly looking everywhere but at her.

“I know what it means,” Lori said quietly with determination written all over her features. “I'm not losing my baby. You gotta cut me open.”

I cringed at the thought but we all knew that was the only way the baby would survive. We stared at one another, nobody was willing to act.

“We don't have any equipment here, no anesthetics, nothing!” Maggie protested.

“Please,” Lori pleaded looking at me. “You have your knife.”

“You won't survive this Lori,” I whispered.

“My baby has to survive,” she pleaded. “Please, my baby… for all of us… Please!!!”

“You see my old c-section scar?” Lori asked.

“Yeah, I see it,” I said crying despite my best efforts not to. It was so hard not to break down when I was watching her saying goodbye to her son. I had to focus though. I promised her I'll do whatever it took to save her baby.

“Kiara… please take care of my children… please, take care of them like they're your own,” Lori pleaded with me making me burst into tears again.

“I will Lori, I promise,” I said squeezing her hand tightly.

“Thank you,” she muttered weakly. After I took several deep breaths, I pulled out my knife and looked her in the eye one last time saying “I'm sorry” and I cut her belly open. Her screams were blood curdling and I heard Carl yelling at me to stop, but I couldn't. There was no way back from this point. Soon she fell into unconsciousness and few seconds later, she stopped breathing.

I was reaching inside and trying to determine the baby's position while Maggie was holding the wound open for me. Soon enough I pulled the baby out of her and massaged its chest lightly to kick-start the breathing. Few seconds later it started crying. It was a beautiful baby girl. I held her in my arms and silent tears were rolling down my cheeks.

“We have to go,” I said. Wrapping the baby in the jacket Carl handed me.

“We can't just leave her like this,” Carl cried. “She'll turn.”

I was about to hand the baby to Maggie and take care of that when Carl shot me down. I tried to protest but he was determined.

“She's my mom,” he said and turned around. Maggie and I waited for him to say his goodbyes and watched him shoot his mom in the head.
