You Are The Wilderness - The Walking Dead Fanfiction

Chapter 31 - You’re My Rock

Rick‘s POV

“We‘re not leavin‘,” I said sternly.
“We can‘t stay here,” Hershel objected.
“What if there‘s another sniper?” Maggie asked. “A wood pallet won‘t stop one of those rounds.”
“We can‘t even go outside,” Beth joined in.
“Not in the daylight,” Carol chimed in.
“Look, if Rick says we‘re not running, we‘re not running,” Glenn shot them down. I was grateful for his support.
“No,” Merle interrupted from behind the bars. “Better live like rats!”
“You got a better idea?!” I snarled at him.
“Yea, we should‘ve snuck out of here last night and live to fight another day,” he retorted. “But we lost that window, didn‘t we? Now I‘m sure he‘s got scouts on every road outta this place by now.”
“We ain‘t scared of that prick,” Daryl countered.
“Well we should be,” Kiara joined in making me cringe. “I knew his brother. He camped with my group outside Charlotte. He killed them all. He killed my brother, but I killed him and escaped. Two days ago I learned about their little sick game of collecting trophies. And his nut-sack of a brother‘s still doing it. He had Colin‘s head in a freaking fish tank and if it wasn‘t for Daryl and Michonne, my head would end up there too. That‘s who we‘re dealing with! I’m not saying we should run for the hills but you need to know that this guy won’t stop until we’re all dead.”
That was the first time I‘ve heard what really happened in Woodbury and it shook me to my core. That was more than I could handle. I felt sick.
“Yea, what she said,” Merle continued. “That truck through the fence thing, that‘s just him ringing the doorbell. We might have some thick walls to hide behind but he‘s got the guns and the numbers. And if he takes the high ground around this place, shoots, he could just starve us out if he wanted to.”
“Let‘s put him in another cell block,” Maggie snarled towards Merle wrapping a bandana around her wrist.
“No, he‘s got a point,” Daryl defended his brother.
“This is all you! You started this!” Maggie yelled.
“What‘s the difference whose fault it is!” Beth chimed in rushing down the stairs. “What do we do?”
“I said we should leave,” Hershel started again. “Now Axel‘s dead!”
I saw Kiara hunch from the corner of my eye, no doubt blaming herself for that. I wanted to tell her it wasn‘t her fault at all, I wanted to talk to her and make things alright between us, but first I needed to get my shit together. It was beginning to be all too much for me.
“We can‘t just sit here,” Hershel pushed further. I couldn‘t take it any longer so I just started to walk away. I needed to clear my head.
“Get back here!!!” I heard Hershel‘s voice boom throughout the cell block making me stop dead in my tracks. “You‘re slippin‘ Rick. We‘ve all seen it. We understand why, but now is not the time. You once said this isn‘t a democracy, now you have to own up to that. I put my family‘s life in your hands. So get your head clear and do something.”
***
After Hershel was done with his speech, I walked away under the pretense of checking and reinforcing the fenced perch we were going to be using for keeping watch from now on, since the guard tower was inaccessible due to Walkers filling up the yard. Their numbers have doubled over the night. I checked the perimeter with my binoculars and I thought I saw her again… no… she wasn‘t really there. She was dead. She wasn’t there… I was shaken out of my thoughts by the sound of the door opening and saw Carl come up to me.
“You shouldn‘t be out here,” I murmured.
“I‘m a good shot,” he retorted. It seemed like he‘d gotten older over the past few days I was MIA.
“Yes, you are,” I agreed.
“Hey, dad?” he asked hesitantly.
“Yea?”
“If I say something, will you promise not to be mad?” he continued.
“I won‘t get mad,” I muttered looking around cautiously, trying to avoid the eye contact. I felt like I disappointed him as well. With the way I handled things. I should‘ve been there for him when he lost his mother. Instead, I lost it, robbing him of a father as well. At least he had Kiara. That was my only consolation. I didn‘t even want to think how much I must have disappointed her. I couldn‘t afford to go there. Not when everybody‘s life was in jeopardy.
“You should stop,” Carl said.
“Stop what?”
“Being the leader,” he elaborated making me look at him probably for the first time that day. “Let Hershel and Daryl handle things. You deserve a rest.”
Boy was he right. I was so tired I could probably sleep for days and I had a lot of stuff to figure out. I needed a rest that was for sure.
“Dad?” he started again. “You should talk to Kiara. Don‘t shut her out.” And with that he walked away leaving me to my chaotic thoughts. After I made sure the cage was secure enough I assigned Maggie to take a watch over there.
“Eyes open, head down,” I instructed handing her my rifle. “The field‘s filled with Walkers. I didn‘t see any snipers out there but we‘re keeping Maggie on watch,” I said walking towards the back of the cell block.
“I can do that,” Kiara chimed in. “I mean, there‘s not that much I can do at the moment but I can keep watch.”
“No,” I cut her off making her look at me incredulously. “You need to get some rest. You‘re barely able to walk as it is and you ripped some of your stitches open yesterday.”
She glared at Hershel for telling me then redirected her gaze at me. I wasn‘t going to change my mind and she knew that, so she stormed off into our cell. I‘ll have to talk to her sooner than later before I screwed things up beyond repair.
“I can get up in that guard tower ‘n‘ take out half them Walkers, get these guys a chance to fix the fence,” Daryl joined in.
“Or we use some of the cars to put the bus in place,” Michonne suggested.
“We can‘t access the field without burnin‘ through our bullets,” Hershel objected.
“So we‘re trapped in here,” Glenn stated. “There‘s barely any food or ammo.”
“We‘ve been here before,” Daryl muttered. “We‘ll be alright.”
“That‘s when it was just us,” Glenn retorted. “Before there was a snake in the nest.”
God not this again I thought to myself. I wasn‘t happy about having Merle there with us but what else I could possibly do?
“Man, are we gonna go through this again?” Daryl asked, irritated. “Look, Merle‘s stayin‘ here. He‘s with us now. Get used to it. All y‘all!” he said and stormed off as well.
“Seriously Rick,” Glenn started. “I don‘t think Merle living here‘s gonna fly.”
“I can‘t kick him out,” I retorted.
“No one asked you to live with Shane after he tried to kill you!” Glenn snarled back. I didn‘t know what to say to that but Hershel helped me out.
“Merle has military experience,” he started. “He may be erratic, but don‘t underestimate his loyalty to his brother.”
***
I was about to go talk to Kiara when Carl ran into the cell block yelling that Andrea was approaching the prison. Shit!!! If this was a trap I was going to kill her myself without hesitation. We ran out, Kiara, Glenn and Carl positioning themselves in the fenced outside corridor, and me and others taking out positions outside on the yard. “All clear,” Merle yelled as we moved forward.
“Are you alone?!” I yelled running towards the gate.
“Open the gate!” she yelled back at me.
“ARE YOU ALONE?!” I repeated my question.
“Rick!” she yelled attracting Walkers in the field. I threw keys to Daryl to open the gate and as she walked inside I grabbed her and shoved her against the fence in order to search her. She was taken aback by our reaction, I could see that but I couldn‘t risk it.
“Alright, get down! On the floor!” I yelled and grabbing her bag I muttered. “I asked if you were alone!”
“I am,” she said, utterly confused.
“Welcome back,” I muttered grabbing her arm and leading her inside.
***
“I’m not an enemy Rick,” Andrea said incredulously after I didn’t allow her to come further inside the cell block.
“We had that field,” I started. “Courtyard, until your boyfriend tore down the fence with a truck and shot us up.”
“He said you fired first,” she retorted making Kiara behind me snort without a hint of an amusement.
“What else did he say, huh?” Kiara started. “You think he came here with a basket full of muffins to welcome us to the neighborhood?! You know us. You’ve been a part of our group for months. Do you really think we would’ve fired first especially when we know we’re hopelessly outnumbered?!”
“I— I didn’t know anything about that” Andrea muttered, taken aback by Kiara’s reaction. “As soon as I found out I came. I didn’t even know you were in Woodbury until after the shootout.”
“That was days ago,” Glenn chimed in.
“I told you I came as soon as I could,” Andrea retorted looking around for help. “What have you told them?!” she asked Michonne.
“Nothin’,” she said calmly.
“I don’t get it,” Andrea cried out. “I left Atlanta with you people and now I’m the odd man out?”
“He almost killed Michonne and he would’ve killed us!” Glenn bit back.
“With his finger on a trigger,” she retorted pointing at Merle. “Isn’t he the one who kidnapped you? Who beat you?!
“Don’t make this about Merle,” Kiara snarled. “Don’t get me wrong, he’s an asshole alright, but he’s got nothing on your psycho boyfriend! I had an exclusive chance to find out what a fucking sick son of a bitch he is. You wanna see? Then look at my face!” she yelled stepping up into the dim light. “Not enough? Then how about this?!” she was in a full blown rage now and there was no stopping her as she lifted up her tank top and tore open one of the bandages on her toned abdomen. “That’s who your boyfriend is!” she hissed and stormed off into the cell block.
“Listen, I cannot excuse of explain what Phillip has done,” she started again. “but I am here trying to bring us together. We have to work this out!”
“There’s nothing to work out,” I shot her down immediately. There was no way in hell we could let this bastard live. Not after what he’s done to Kiara. “We’re gonna kill him. I don’t know how or when, but we will.”
“We can settle this,” she insisted. “There is room in Woodbury for all of you!”
“You know better than that,” Merle snorted at her.
“What makes you think that this man wants to negotiate,” Hershel joined in. “Did he say that?”
“No.”
“Then why did you come here?” I asked.
“Because he’s gearing up for war,” she retorted. “The people are terrified. They see you as killers! They’re training to attack.”
“I tell you what,” Daryl muttered. “Next time you see Philip, you tell him Imma take his other eye.”
“We’ve taken too much shit for too long,” Glenn said. “He wants a war, he’s got one.”
“Rick?” Andrea turned at me. “If you don’t sit down and try to work this out I don’t know what’s gonna happen. He has a whole town. Look at you. You’ve lost so much already. You can’t stay alone anymore.”
“You wanna make this right?” I started walking towards her. “Get us inside.”
“No, there are innocent people,” she cried out.
“Then we’ve got nothin’ to talk about,” I muttered and left to find Kiara but she was nowhere to be found. I sighed and decided to try and find her later. It was time to finally talk to her. I was dreading it but I had to try and fix it. We hadn‘t talked properly since Lori died and I missed her so much it caused me almost a physical pain.
***
After Andrea left, I went back inside and found Kiara laying on the cot in our cell facing the wall.
“May I?” I asked alerting her to my presence. She turned her head towards me and I could see the hurt and the insecurity in those crazy blue-green eyes.
“I never forbade you to come into our cell,” she said sitting up and wincing in pain.
“How‘re you feelin‘?” I asked not knowing how to continue.
“I‘m healing,” she said. “Yesterday didn‘t help much but then again it could be way worse.”
“I‘m glad to hear that,” I muttered and sat down. “About what happened in Woodbury—“
“I don‘t wanna talk about it,” she cut me off probably more harshly than she intended to, running her hand through her crazy hair and sighing. “I mean. I told you all what happened and there‘s not much left to talk about. I‘m dealing with it the best way I can and I don‘t want to put even more on your plate.”
“Kiara,” I muttered and hung my head, looking down on the ground not knowing how to continue. I grabbed her hand in between both mine making her look up at me with tears in her eyes. “I love you,” I said, gathering my wits in order to say what I needed to say to her. “You and Carl and Judith are my life. And I can‘t even begin to imagine what you‘ve been through and the fact that I wasn‘t there for you, to help you through it… it’s tearing me up inside. We‘ve all been through hell and back but that doesn‘t change the way I feel about you. If anything, it made me love you even more, because of how strong you are. You are my rock, you were my rock through everything and I don‘t know if I‘d make it so far without you. So let me return the favor and be here for you. Let me show you how much you mean to me. And I… I‘m so sorry for disappointing you. I love you so much… I…”
I started stuttering and looked down on my feet again. When I looked up, she was still looking at me, and I could see emotions change on her face, the ones of fear and hurt being replaced by those of relief and adoration and I could feel that terrible weight lift from my chest almost immediately.
“Rick Grimes,” she started sternly and hugged me fiercely. “You couldn‘t disappoint me if you tried. I love you so much. I understand what you‘ve been through and I don‘t blame you for needing some space. There’s only so much pressure one can handle before they crack and you’ve been through so much, especially lately. I just want you to know that you‘re not alone in this. We‘re family and we‘re here for you. I‘m here for you.”
I hugged her back, keeping in mind her ribs were broken and even though she would die before she‘d admit it, I was sure she was still in a lot of pain. I was stroking her hair and enjoying the closeness of her body as I was mustering up the courage to do one more thing I intended that night.
“Look baby,” I started and grabbed her hands again. “Like I said we‘ve been through hell together and according to Andrea, there‘s even more shit coming out way. And um… in these uncertain times, there‘s only one thing certain and that is the fact that I love you and… What I wanna say is that… well in the world for what it is now, this kind of formalities probably doesn‘t even matter anymore, but um… I would never forgive myself if god forbid somethin’ happened and you didn’t get to know how much you mean to me… so… I would like you to… um I.” Damn why is it so hard to do this?!?! I had to chuckle. I’ve been fighting for my life ever since this epidemic started, facing horrors beyond my imagination and yet I couldn’t get myself to ask one simple question. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves and finally blurted out: “Will you be my wife?”
I could see the exact moment when what I said dawned on her because her expression changed from utter confusion and slight amusement to one of a complete shock. She stared at me with her mouth hung open. I fumbled in a pocket of my pants and retrieved an engagement ring I snatched from a Walker back when we were on the road. I knew I wanted her to be mine even back then and I only became more sure as the time went on. And after almost losing her couple days ago I realized I couldn‘t wait any longer.
Upon seeing the ring in my hand she clasped both her hands over her mouth and started frantically nodding and few stray tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Does that mean yes?” I asked with a crooked grin plastered on my face.
“Yes, Rick, I will,” she whispered and I reached for her left hand, slipping the ring on her finger. Surprisingly, it fit perfectly. I grabbed her by the nape of her neck and kissed her so passionately it made my head spin. She returned the kiss with a ferocity that matched my own and before I realized what was going on, we were tearing clothes off of each other and kissing everywhere we could reach. I pulled her tightly against me making her hiss in pain.
“Baby, are you sure you wanna do this right now?” I asked, brushing few stray hairs from her face. “I don‘t want to hurt you, we can wait until you‘re healed.”
“I want this Rick,” she whispered placing her index finger against my mouth to silence me. “Just go easy on me,” she said smirking devilishly.
That did it for me. It’s only been couple of days but I missed the warmth of her body so much. I laid her down on our bed carefully and placed myself on the bed next to her pulling the covers over us as I noticed she was shivering slightly. It‘s been a while since I took my sweet time making love to her and I was going to enjoy this thoroughly. I entwined my fingers in her hair pulling her in for yet another scorching kiss that made her moan into my mouth deliciously.
I continued kissing down her neck to her ample breasts enjoying the familiar taste and scent of her skin, then started stroking her abdomen lightly, going lower and lower, down her toned thighs then back up to her core that was hot and waiting for me. I knew I wouldn‘t be able to hold back much longer so I positioned myself above her and whispering “I love you” I thrust inside her making her arch her back as we moaned in unison at the contact. She pulled me in for another kiss as we started moving in a mutual rhythm, kissing everywhere we could reach and whispering sweet nothings to each other breathily.
After a while she pushed me on my side and then on my back as she positioned herself on top of me, kissing me fiercely as she slid down my length and started moving at a slow pace that was driving me crazy. She threw her head back, her mouth hung open as she was savoring the pleasure building up in between her thighs. I could tell she was close by the way her movements became erratic and her breathing grew even heavier. I reached under the covers and started circling her nub with my thumb making her moan loudly and collapse onto me, convulsing as her orgasm took her. Feeling her clenching around me sent me over the edge as well and we came almost simultaneously, muffling our moans with kisses and bites to our necks and shoulders. We stayed like that, she laying on top of me, completely spent and satisfied, for once feeling at peace and safe in spite of the horrors that waited ahead.
