My Lil' AssKicker
Gunshots
CARL’S POV
“Shit. Get her!”
I pulled off the sack on my head. Beth was sprinting through the forest, past the moving car.
The muscles in my legs felt restless and ready to leap and run after her. Seeing my chance, I stood up.
Both the men held up their guns. “Not you too!”
“Should we stop the car, Thomas?”
The car abruptly stopped, thrusting me forward along with everyone else standing up. “Jake, Larry, jump out and bring her back! Shit, if anyone finds our camp, we’re in serious trouble.”
I smiled. Hell, if anyone was going to escape, my money would be on Daryl.
Jake and Larry hopped off the back of the truck, and Thomas loaded his gun. “Devon, you watch the rest of ‘em.” Without looking back, he followed Jake into the woods.
Alone with Devon and Daryl, my mind raced. I could escape here. I could take down Devon with Daryl and be gone before they come back. Go, go, go!
I glanced at Daryl, who gave me a warning glare. I raised my eyebrows, pleading with him. He shook his head and scanned the forest.
Suddenly, gunshots. One first, then two more. Devon squinted in the direction of the noise.
“Looks like someone caught the bitch.” He laughed maliciously.
Without further thought, I swept his feet from under him. His gun shot, and he grunted with surprise as his head slammed against the side of the truck with a bang. I almost felt sympathy as he let out a cry in agony.
“Carl!” Daryl called, already out of the truck.
I grabbed Devon’s gun, and swung my legs over the vehicle. “See ya.” I said casually, smirking. Devon groaned.
Daryl had grabbed the duffel bag filled with guns, and swung it over his shoulder. Somehow he found his crossbow before I’d even grabbed Devon’s gun.
“Let’s go.” Daryl said. “Split.”
“Fine by me.” I shrugged. If anyone was saving Beth, it was going to be me. Not Daryl.
He nodded, and quietly ran a little to the right. I took the left, in the direction of the gunshots. I expected that Daryl would skirt around and get them from behind.
I struggled to keep quiet as I ran through the dead leaves, so I pointed my feet as they touched the ground. That nearly muted the sound of my footsteps.
Suddenly, I heard Beth scream nearby. I ran faster, not caring if my feet made any noise at all. To my far right, the direction Daryl ran in, I heard a gunshot.
“Please! You don’t have to do this.” Thomas begged. Wait, Thomas? Beth must’ve taken him down!
“Beth!” I called.
After a few moments, I heard her sweet voice. “Carl, I’m over here!”
I ran in her direction faster than I knew my legs could carry me.
When I reached a small clearing, I could see Thomas on the ground with both of his arms up over his face. One of his legs was extended, and one was folded inward.
Beth was standing a few feet away with her gun aimed at his head. Her hair was in front of her face, but I could see she was crying.
“Bastard!” I spat as I approached Thomas.
“No, no, no! I can exp-”
He had no time to finish. I’d already put a bullet in his head.
I jogged over and tightly wrapped my arms around Beth’s shaking body. She was soft and warm. It felt good to hold her.
