My Lil' AssKicker

I Admire You, Too

DARYL’S POV

As I struggled to stay awake in the smelly, torn lawn chair fixed on the porch of Judith’s personal cabin, multiple thoughts raced furiously through my mind.
I listened to the soft breathing of Judith and Beth. At around 3 am, Beth emerged from her cabin, wrapped in a fuzzy, blue blanket, sleepily announcing she was going to spend the rest of the night with Judith.

I perked up at the sound of a door opening and shutting. I rested a dangerous hand steadily on my crossbow, but sighed when it was only a tentative Beth.
“Beth? Do ya know what time it is?”
She gasped, resting a meek hand on her chest, no doubt feeling her startled heart beating inside her warm body. “Daryl! You scared me.” As she approached, I could still hear the sleep in her voice.
I smirked unwillingly. Trying to wipe it off my face, I glanced up at Glenn. “Yo, Glenn!” I whispered. “Still breathin?”
All I was granted was an exhausted thumbs up from behind the back of the chair. He snorted. “Huh? Yeah. Yeah!”
Beth giggled, and yawned, revealing her white teeth. I could smell her mild morning breath. As she was yawning, I looked at her pajamas. She wore a Guns n Roses muscle tee, and I could see little bits of of white lace bra peeking out. I looked away quickly. Her pants were baby blue pj’s that were too large for her skinny legs, with little yellow ducks sprinkled all over. Then most damn hilarious thing about the apocalypse was all of the mismatched clothing people wore.
“I’m sleepin in Judy’s cabin.” Without another word, she wandered to the door, and pushed on it. She groaned in frustration.
I held my arm in front of her, rising to my feet. I stretched. “It’s a pull, Beth.”
Beth waved a petite hand in my face. “Thanks.” She yawned again as she spoke.
I nodded, and sat back down. Then, I realized what just happened. “Wait!” I scrambled out of the chair.
She leaned out of the doorway, her long, blonde hair falling at her side. “Yes, Daryl?”
I crossed my arms. “It ain’t safe in there, Bethy.”
Beth crossed her arms, but with more attitude than I. “Daryl, I feel safe with you here.”
I wasn’t convinced. “Ya can’t.”
“I will.” She said obstinately.
“Ya won’t, damn it.” Stubborn as a damn mule, she was. I spat out of the side of my lip, onto the frosted ground.
Beth took two confident steps towards me, her XL duck pants swinging with each stride. “I practically raised her. I’m going in.”
I leaned heavily on my right leg. “We all raised her.”
She looked genuinely offended. “Do you not remember, at the prison, when Rick was wandering through crazy town and I spent so many sleepless nights nursing her?”
I knew she was right, but no way in hell was I about to admit it. “Everyone did our parts with helping.”
A tear slid down her face, which was shivering in the cold. “I became a mother at sixteen, Daryl! Everyone turned to me! No one else wanted to sit constantly with her, or feed her every two hours, or change her diaper every hour! But you were more than willing to hold her every so often!”
I leaned back, surprised at her outburst. “Beth-”
“Do you remember, when we were living at the country club, when we were all starving, who skipped one and a half out of two ‘meals’ a day, to feed a growing three year old?” She spat. Then, her eyes widened through the hot, stick tears that rolled down her pink cheeks, as if she realized what she said.
I wrapped my arms around her, and she cast me a grateful gaze. Beth buried her face into my shoulder. “I’m sorry, Daryl.” Her voice was muffled into my flannel shirt.
I rubbed her back softly, like I used to see her daddy do. “No, I’m sorry. Ya became a mother so soon. We all expected so much from ya, and ya always did it with a damn good attitude.” I sighed. “I admire the hell out of that.”
Beth hugged me back tightly. “I admire you too, Daryl.”
I smirked, amused. “How so?” I asked, hoping I wasn’t pushing the envelope.
She looked up at me with her big blue eyes like a little girl. With smiling pink lips, she said, “You’re the strongest. After Carl, everyone looks right to you. I think you’ll outlive us all.”
I was reminded of the conversation we had at the old house Beth and I burned down. She still believed she was the weak one. Even though they were meant to flatter me, I felt sting in her words. The day I outlive Beth… well, it’ll be the day that I give up.
“Go in. Sleep in the bed next to little ass kicker. I gotcha.”
Beth beamed. “Awh, Daryl!” She leaned in and gave me a warm little peck on the cheek. Her face lingered beside mine for a while before the skipped into the cabin.

Shivers ran down my spine as I warmly remembered the whole exchange.
Damn, I hoped they were okay in there. I would do anything to get Judy back. She was already bitten once, and by some strange miracle she came back to us. Now I prayed for the first time in probably thirty years, begging for her to come back.
I glanced up at Glenn, who was alertly scanning the forest. I noticed his muscles tense, but it must’ve been a false alarm, because he leaned back in the creaky chair and sighed thoughtfully.
“I can’t take this anymore.” I blurted.
“How’s that?” Glenn asked with genuine interest. That’s the thing I liked about him. You could say the studpidest thing in the whole damn planet, and he’d still act interested, like every word that came out of your mouth had meaning. He was one of the most loyal sonnova bitches I’ve ever met.
“Can’t take it no more. I juss want her back. Judith.” I closed my eyes, willing this new word to fade away.
He stared down at me from the lifegaurd’s chair. “It’s been a long week, man.”
I bit my lip until I felt like it’d bleed. “Bother’s me that there’s nothin we can do. Juss sit and… wait. It’s outta our power.”
He nodded thoughtfully. I sighed again, and took in the emerging sunset.
Suddenly, I heard a slight moaning, and the ruffling of covers. I poked my head in and expected to see Beth having some fashion of a nightmare, but was surprised with something entirely different.
“Holy shit!” I nearly yelled. I could hear Glenn speaking in the distance, but I tuned him out as I could feel myself gag.
I couldn’t keep myself from swearing my ass off. Every cuss in the book spewed out of my mouth as I rushed over to the sleeping girl.
Tears streamed steadily out of my eyes, and settled in the slight scruff on my chin area. I took a step back and soaked in the scene.
Holy shit.
