My Lil' AssKicker

Alive

CHELSEA’S POV

“It’s a fortune teller.”
“How so?”
“It tells you when your life is about to become hell on earth.”
Andy looked confused, but guessed correctly that I wouldn’t say much else, and shifted his attention to Emily. The quietly talked while seated on the bed opposite of mine.
My mind raced with an incredible speed. Horrible thoughts would slice into my mind, and I wouldn’t be able to even finish them because two more would take their place. I felt dizzy and afraid.
Three little taps sounded at the door. “Knock knock.” A female voice announced herself. I scowled. Aria.
“Stay out.” I tried to sound firm, but a sob escaped my lungs.
The door swung open. She wore the usual smug face and perfect white teeth. “Hey, girlfriend.” Her voice was smooth like fresh butter.
“Leave me alone, Aria.” I hid my melting face behind my shaking hands.
Aria took a few steps closer. “I think I’m about to go have a little chat with my good friend Carl. Do you know where he is?”
Andrew stood up. “She said, get out.” His voice was lower and unwavering.
“Take it easy, pipsqueak.” Aria condescended. “We’re just talkin.”
“I don’t care what you’re doing.” He took a few steps closer. “Get the hell out.”
She looked him up and down, and opened the door. Aria lingered in the doorway. “I’ll tell him you said hello.”
I waited until she was gone to wail into my thighs.
A soft hand landed on my shoulder. “Chelsea?” Emily offered. I looked up. “You should go get Carl before Aria does.”
I sniffled. “You’re right.” I said after a while. “Stay here?”
They both nodded. I grabbed my coat and jumped into the cold winter air.

After checking the cabins and asking around, I trudged into the woods in search of Carl. I followed a pair of heavy boots stamped into the snow, and trailed them. They soon intersected with a pair of… bare feet? I snickered, and quickened my pace.
I fought the urge to call his name, in fear that walkers were nearby. The winter seemed to slow them down, though, because it was almost like the no longer aimlessly roamed the earth.
Based on the nearby talking I heard, I knew I was close. I held my breath and prepared to break the news.
I slowed my pace rapidly when I saw how he was sitting with that blonde girl. Beth, that was her name. She was leaning up against him, nearly in his lap, with her eyes closed as he smiled lovingly down at her. She had no shoes on. I almost called out to them until I saw him bend over and kiss her.
My knees magically turned into noodles. I almost dropped onto the ground. Tears slipped down my face, and froze halfway down in the cold. I fought another sob as I covered my mouth.
After the grief passed, it quickly shifted into anger. That son of a bitch. Naomi was right. There are no good people left in this world. How many other girls had Carl Grimes kissed in this camp? How could I be so naive? My fingers curled into tight fists. I was ready to take him down.
I watched him get up and hurry away. My muscles tensed, ready to lunge after him.
No, I told myself. No conflict. Yet. Calm yourself first.
Fortunately for Carl, I listened to myself, and pouted into the woods, snow steaming beneath my enraged body.
We needed to have a little talk.

“Carl!” I called when we were a good mile from the camp.
His face was already red by the time he turned around. “Chelsea? When… how long have you-”
I crossed my arms and flipped my hair out of my face irritably. “What the fuck was that?”

CARL’S POV

I flinched at Chelsea swearing. I wouldn’t be surprised if steam were shooting out of her ears.
“Wh-what was… what?” I asked, dazed.
She pushed my chest with three fingers. “You and Beth.”
I sighed and hit my forehead with the palm of my hand. “Chels… I’m sorry.”
She glared at me, burning through my eyes. Her brown eyes normally melted into mine like chocolate, but now they burned with fire.
Chelsea let out a long breath. “Carl, I need to tell you something.”
I nodded, willing her to continue.
“Nevermind. The time isn’t right now. I’m too mad.” I began to protest, but she stopped me. “Don’t argue with me on this one. I’m not budging.”
Typical Chelsea. Bringing up something but not following through. It wasn’t Beth I wanted to be with anymore, though. The adrenaline of ten minutes ago when I sat with her wore off, and I was slapped back into reality. Beth liked Daryl. To Beth, I was just that little boy who was shot by her friend and was her shadow at the prison. Why did I ever think I had a chance with her?
And here was Chelsea, actually wanting to be with me, and I was still veering towards Beth. How stupid am I?“I thought we had something, Carl.” She said softly.
I shifted my weight to my right. “We do.”
She looked up at me through her long eyelashes. “Do we anymore?”
“I just made a huge mistake, and I’m really sorry. I was running on adrenaline. I’ve never regretted anything more. And I hope you forgive me.”
She leaned in and gave me a warm peck on the cheek. Her face lingered next to mine for a while, then she returned to her position a foot or so apart from me.
“Can things be normal again?” I asked quietly.
Chelsea bit her lip. I recognized that whenever she bit her lip, she was keeping from saying something she’d regret. “I… okay.”
I wanted to kiss her, but it didn’t feel right. She might get offended. But I smiled and looked down at the snow covered ground.
But she cupped my face in her hands. Butterflies mauled my stomach, and I felt my face flush with excitement. I felt her warm breath on my cheek as I closed my eyes, and her soft lips grazed gently against mine. I wrapped my arm around the small of her back, and she leaned into me.
“Yo, Carl!” I heard someone yelling in the distance. We pulled away.
I didn’t break eye contact as I responded, “Yeah?”
I recognized the voice of Maggie. “It’s Judith!”
Chelsea and I both broke into a run at the same time. As we raced through the freshly white forest, millions of scenarios flashed through my mind. Maybe a walker got her. Maybe she turned. Maybe she froze to death. Maybe she was kidnapped. Maybe she wasn’t waking up!
What if she was dead? The thought made me pump my legs harder, and I was going so fast I almost tripped over my own feet. Dad left a responsibility on me, and it was to take care of Judith. I denied that responsibility subconsciously, and Beth took it on. I needed to stop thinking about Beth. It made my cheeks flush red.
Sasha ran right into me around the corner of a cabin. She elbowed my ribs, and I groaned.
She didn’t take any notice to it. “Have you seen her? Judith?” Here eyes were as wide as the full moon above us.
I grabbed her by the shoulders in attempt to calm her down. “What is she? Where did she go?” I would shake the information out of her if I had to.
“She’s gone.”
“Gone?”
Sasha nodded vigorously. “People think she turned.”
I let my arms fall limp at my sides, and Sasha ran off to search somewhere else. Then entire camp was searching frantically for my little sister.
I just hoped she was alive.
