My Lil' AssKicker

It's My Fault

MAGGIE’S POV

As I sprinted into the woods to find Carl, I kept my eyes peeled for a Judith shaped walker.
“Yo, Carl!” I called, making my lungs freeze up in the cold.
There was a pause before an answer echoed off of the snow powdered trees. “Yeah?” It was definitely him. He had a very distinct voice.
I took in a big breath. “It’s Judith.”
“Maggie?” A soft voice sounded behind me. I immediately recognized it as Beth’s. “What’re ya doin out here?”
I whipped around and threw my arms around her. “Everyone’s been lookin for you!” I cried into her shoulder.
“Daryl brought me back to camp. I grabbed some boots and came lookin for you.” She sniffled, then suddenly pulled back. “What is it with Judy?”
Sighing, I kicked the snow off my shoe. “First she was stuck behind the door, then when people came to help, she was gone.”
My little sister fell backwards, landing her backside into the snow. “It’s my fault.” She breathed, her voice cracking at the end. She looked up at me with eyes filled with tears and shock.
I descended on my knees and wrapped my arm around her. Some of her blonde hair softly rested on my fingers. “No it’s no-”
“Yes it is!” Beth wailed through her tears. “It was ‘cause I left the cabin, wasn’t it? Maybe she was lookin for me!”
I rubbed her back, watching her face crumple up in despair. “It’s my fault,” I lied. “I was on watch. I shoulda seen her.” It wasn’t me on watch. It was Ralph, Chelsea’s step brother.
Her grip tightened on my shoulder and I thought my skin would burst. I lightly patted her back, but she gasped.
“What is it?” I inquired, concern lacing around my words.
Beth merely pointed. I slowly followed her gaze to behind my back.
A small walker meandered through the forest, hair stringing over it’s face like cobwebs. A white nightgown clung to it’s boney body. It’s ankle lagged is it dragged itself along. One arm hung limply at its side and swung with each scraping step. A noise resembling a muffled dying animal climbed out of it’s decaying mouth.
“Judith.” Beth whispered, and wailed.
Beth’s cry gained the creature’s attention. It scratched it’s feet across the snow covered ground in our direction, failing it’s decaying arms in our direction. A strangled sob pushed its way out of Beth’s lungs.
I stood up, leaving Beth to cry on the ground. Taking careful and soft steps, I slowly approached the distorted vision of a little girl.
When I was a short foot away from Judith, or, the shell of Judith, I knelt down. She grazed dully down at me though her eyes, they were both a glazed over green now. She snarled, revealing her little teeth, which still looked the same, white and small.
“Judith,” I tried to sound firm, but my voice shook wildly. “I’m going to take care of you now.”
I reached for my revolver. It felt colder than usual in the winter air.
“Wait!” Beth choked. “She turned last time. Maybe she’ll do it again,”
Unconvinced, I looked her up and down. She looked too far gone in my opinion. But I decided to humor Beth. I didn’t want her regretting for the rest of her life not making me wait longer.
“Okay.” I sighed.
Beth smiled warmly, and I began untying my belt.
“What are you doing?” Beth sniffed.
Pulling out my belt, I aimed for Judith’s ankles. “Tying her feet so while we wait, she can’t get at us.”
When I knelt down, Beth spoke again. “Tie her by her waist around that tree. She won’t fall on her face then. I’ll help.”I nodded. Beth and I used ourselves as bait, and lured Judith near a young tree, small enough to wrap a small child around it with a belt.
I never thought I’d even have to consider trying a little girl around a tree. I mean come on, when the hell would you even think something like that?
So we tied her. Beth wiped a little tear from her pink cheek when we’d finished. We stood and gazed longingly at her for a little while, then repositioned ourselves on the ground in our previous spot.
“I hope she comes back.” Whispered Beth, leaning into my lap and closing her eyes.
I patted her soft blonde hair. “So do I.”
