Chapter 11

My jaw dropped a little, though I know it was a bit immature. Of course Wilson would have feelings for someone and want to kiss them. Like I did with Daryl.
"You guys kissed?" Rick sounded surprised, and his gaze travelled to me. I looked down at my boots.
"Yeah," said Wilson. His reply was gruff.
I glanced at Wilson then. Fury was in his eyes. Usually Wilson was unreadable. But not now.
"Well, I'm sorry Wilson, but I couldn't have her in the group."
"Why not? She was doing the right thing."
I let out a little gasp at that. Murder? Could Wilson, my ever rational brother, be condoning murder? Huh. Maybe love was blind.
"How can you say that, Wilson? She murdered two of our own and burned their bodies. The infection is there. Killing them won't help."
"Look, I'm sure whatever Carol did she thought was for the best," I said, thinking Wilson could use some support. "But I'm having no part in it. There's an infection, you say? I was a nurse before all this. I'll help."
Rick stared at me in awe while Wilson looked at me like I was crazy.
"Are you sure? You could get sick!"
"I have to, Wilson, it's my job."
"Fine, if you wanna get yourself killed, go do that!" He roared, and stalked off, leaving only me and Rick. As I turned to leave, I could feel Rick's eyes burn an imprint into my neck.

The rate of infection multiplied rapidly. At the start of the morning, I had nine patients. By the afternoon, I had twenty-seven. Hershel came to help out, but my hands were very much full.
That night, when I doing my nightly rounds, I came upon Mrs Palmer's cell. She was an old, religious woman whose family was killed at the start of this.
She was collapsed on the floor.
I swung open the door of her cell, and checked her pulse. Dead.
I sighed. That was the fourth one today. Hershel had insisted that we take them to the dimly-lit corridor when we had to put them out.
"The others don't need to see."
I scampered across the hall and pulled out the stretcher. I wheeled my way to her cell and propped her up. Hershel had gone to sleep hours ago, and I didn't want to wake him. I still had six more hours to go anyway.
I managed to haul her body onto the stretcher, which wasn't easy as she had six inches on my 5'4 frame and easily a hundred pounds on my 115.
I looked her up and down and felt like crying. It wasn't fair, what this world was reduced to. This woman should have died peacefully in her bed surrounded by family, not having to be put out by a stranger.
I tucked her grey hair neatly behind her shoulders, spotting a golden chain with a silver cross on it as I did so.
I sighed as I fingered it. I never had much time for religion. I was raised by a conservative, Catholic family, but I never had much faith. It didn't make much sense to me anyways.
I wheeled her out to the stuffy hallway and positioned her away from the door, in case anything went south.
I snatched my knife from my belt and gripped it firmly in my hand. I had taken some out before. This should be easy.
I raised my knife and stabbed her right between the eyes. There was a squelch as it entered her brain.
I yanked it out.
"Christ," said a coarse voice behind me, and I jumped, startled, but relaxed when I saw that it was only Daryl.
"For fucks sake, Daryl, don't sneak up on me like that!"
He smirked, raising his arms defensively into the air. "Sorry."
I sighed and placed my knife back into its holder. "No problem. What you doing here anyways?"
"Comin' ta see what I can do ta help."
"No one besides me and Hershel are allowed in here."
"So? I don't y'all turn down volunteers."
"Don't you think it's a little late to be helping?"
He shrugged. "Couldn't sleep."
I gave him an exasperated look. "Fine, but if you get sick it's you're fault."
"Hey, I wouldn't mind gettin' sick if you're my doc."
"Don't worry, I'm sure Hershel can squeeze you into his schedule."
He laughed. "So, what can I do?"
"I don't know, you're the volunteer with a death wish."
He snickered. "I'll wheel this poor bitch out."
I returned to my rounds as he wheeled poor Mrs Palmer out of the infirmary.
Luckily, I didn't find any other dead on passed out patients, which I thanked god for.
He came back in. "Heard about Carol."
I gave a grim nod. "She didn't seem the killing type."
"She wasn't," he snapped. He sounded offended.
"Daryl, don't get your panties in a twist. I didn't know the woman that well."
He nodded. "Yeah, sorry."
"You seem to be apologizing a lot today."
He laughed. "What can I say, you're not a forgivin' woman."
"I can be very merciful, for your information."
"Then do ya forgive our little shenanigan in the wood?"
He caught me off guard, but I was determined not to show it.
"There was nothing to forgive."
Our eyes met then, and I was determined that they didn't betray anything, but I don't think I succeeded.
"I thought you liked Rick."
"Okay, in a movie, this would be the part where I cringe and you kiss me?"
"Kiss ya? Know you're makin' demands."
I stepped forward until I was right in his face.
"Do you want me to beg?"
"There's no need."
His lips crashed onto mine, and they were chapped and tender.
I pressed my pelvis against his, and a low moan escaped from deep within his throat.
I ran my fingers through his unkempt hair while his lips explored my body inside out.
The rest, you say, is history.

Notes

Daryl! This was kinda rushed because I already had this chapter written, but then the website glitched and I had to re-write it. The original version was a lot smuttier, but I have to get to bed! So, do you like the relationship between Daryl and Kodi or do you prefer a Kodi and Rick pairing? Let me know in the comment section!
