Dead Men Walking

Misery Loves Company

06:
Misery loves company
I opened my eyes slowly and sighed. Last night was the best sleep I’d had in a long time. The Dixon truck wasn’t the most comfortable place to slumber, but I didn’t dare sleep in a tent because of.
After last night, I decided Daryl could spend a night in the truck. I needed some time to stretch out, even if it was on the ground.

I rolled over on my back and felt something lying next to me.
I froze.
Logically, I knew it wasn’t a ‘geek’. I knew I wasn’t in danger of being eaten alive. But Merle’s warning kept sticking in my mind.

Sometimes these men can be more evil than those things walking around out here.

Was it one of Shane’s group sneaking in on me? What if it was? How do I handle such a situation?
I was too terrified to look over. I didn’t want to see a stranger lying next to me, but I couldn’t just lie here and wait for them to make a move.
I bit my lip and swallowed my fear. I had to be brave. No matter who was beside me, I knew I had to show I was not a scared little girl. I was a brave adult who could handle herself.

I took a deep breath and peeked beside me.

I almost laughed when I saw the man lying next to me. I wanted to jump on him, hug him – I had never been so happy to see Daryl in all my life.

“The fuck you staring at?”
He croaked opening his eyes.
“You’re in my tent, dude.”
I said pushing the sleeping bag off us both. He snorted and pulled the sleeping back up around him again.
“I think you got it backwards, little girl.”
“No I told you I wanted the tent last night. That made it mine.”
Daryl laughed out loud.
“That ain’t how it works, little miss ‘I-can-take-care-of-myself-in-the-truck’.”
“I have been taking care of myself, thank you very much.”

I didn’t like the way Daryl was still treating me like a little girl.
For the past several weeks, I’ve been handling my own in the truck. I stopped being afraid a long time ago.

“Okay, then let’s go. Right now. I’ll take you in the woods and we’ll see how much you can take care of yourself.”
He smiled sitting up.
“Fine. But you know if anything happens to me, Merle will flip the fuck out. You can’t let me get hurt.”
“I ain’t afraid of Merle.”
He said grabbing his crossbow and exiting the tent.

Inside I was freaking out. My stomach was twisting into knots thinking about Daryl leaving me in the woods alone. But I didn’t want him to know how afraid I was.
I followed him out of the tent and over to the edge of the woods.

“Where you two lovebirds going?”
Merle laughed.
His harmless comment caused mixed reactions. I blushed and looked at my feet – Daryl got pissed and shouted profanity at his older brother.
“Calm down. I was kidding. Still can’t take a joke, eh? I’m sure Kaydence has much higher standards. Ain’t that right, sweetheart?”

I smiled at Merle and walked away quickly. I didn’t want either of them to notice how much I was blushing right now.
While staring down at my feet, I wasn’t paying much attention to where I was going. I ran into someone, knocking us both down.
“Oh my, I’m so sorry.”
I said helping the blonde stranger up.
“It’s okay. I’m Andrea, by the way.”
She smiled brushing herself off.
“I’m Kaydence.”
I replied trying to not sound as awkward as I felt.

“Why were watching your feet, though?”
“I – uh, it’s a long and very embarrassing story.”
“Let me guess, it’s an embarrassing boy thing?”
She smiled and I blushed again.
“It’s a confusing thing right now.”
“I have a younger sister. I’ve seen it before.”
Andrea smiled patting my arm.

“Andrea! You coming with us?”
Someone asked walking up to her. He was the boy Merle had described as ‘the fucking Asian’.
The boy smiled at me and introduced himself as Glenn.

“Kaydence, nice to meet you. May I ask where you’re going?”
Maybe it was Daryl’s sour opinion of these people that made me suspicious of them leaving.
“We’re heading into town. Shane thought it would be a good idea to pick up a few supplies – food, water, anything we can use.”
Glenn explained.
“Shane also thought it would be a good idea to take along your friend Merle.”
Andrea said. There was something about the way she said his name that made me defensive. Sure Merle is an asshole, but he’s still my best friend.
“You have a problem with Merle?”
I asked as politely as I could.

Andrea sighed.
“He’s not as … polite to all of us as he is to you.”
“He was polite enough to let you stay with us.”
“You’re right.”
She said giving in to me.

Once Andrea and Glenn walked away, her news hit me.
Merle was leaving – he was heading into Atlanta, a city that we knew was overrun with corpses. He couldn’t be serious. He wouldn’t leave Daryl and me like that.
I ran over to the area where Shane was helping one of his people load a truck.
“Is Merle leaving with your group?”
I asked Shane.

“He said he’d like to go.”
Shane replied with a frown.
“But it’s dangerous!”
“It’ll be fine. He’ll be fine. Besides, Merle looks like he can take care of himself.”
“That’s not the point!”

I tried to keep myself composed and calm but the thought of Merle leaving and maybe not returning was freaking me out inside.
“You got a problem with the plan – go talk to Merle.”
Shane said, his voice holding some authority. I didn’t like it. I just met this man and he’s trying to take over our little camp. Daryl was right. These people are no good for us.

I searched all over the camp for Merle. I couldn’t find him or Daryl anywhere. I was frustrated and worried at this point. I just wanted to find my idiot best friend and talk him out of this stupid plan. He didn’t need to go to Atlanta. We have all we need right here.
I heard a noise coming from behind me. It was whispered talking. I recognized the two voices instantly. After spending weeks on the road together, I’d know those voices anywhere.

“Just fucking promise me.”
Merle said angrily.
“Fine. I fucking promise.”
“Don’t let anything happen to her. Keep her safe no matter what.”
“Jesus, Merle. You act like ya ain’t never comin’ back.”
Daryl said. I could hear he was just as worried as I was.
“I just want to make sure everything is covered before I leave. She’s not like us. She’s not used to living out in the woods or hunting for food. And the girl can’t kill to save her life – literally. Take care of her, little brother.”

Merle and Daryl ended their conversation and rejoined the rest of the group. Everyone, except me, was helping Shane load up a car to take into Atlanta. All the essentials needed to make a run – walkie-talkies, tools, guns, knives. I watched in horror as they loaded this car up.
“Merle, please. Don’t go.”
I begged him.
He sighed and hugged me, crushing my tiny frame in one of his bear hugs.
“I’ll be fine, Kay.”
He said loud enough for the group to hear. Then he leaned down and whispered in my ear.
“Stick close to Daryl. He’ll take care of you. If things look strange, Daryl will get you to safety.”

I tried my best to not cry, but I felt the tears leaving my eyes.
“Dammit, Dixon. Be careful. And don’t be rude to the others. They’re starting to complain.”

Merle chuckled and patted me on the head – a gesture he always did when he didn’t know how to say goodbye.
“Remember that promise, little brother.”
He said getting in the car with the rest of the group.
I tried to hold my emotions together as I watched the car fade out of sight.

I felt Daryl grab my hand and pull me closer to him.
“He’ll be fine, alright?”
He barely whispered to me.

I let myself cry as my mind kept asking the one question no one could answer.

Would I ever see Merle again
