We Were Born to Die.

Seven.

The morning arrived too slowly, I had met Beth, Hershel's youngest daughter and she had leant me a blanket, some pyjama bottoms, all with a shy smile.
Needless to say I liked her instantly.

“Glenn,” I hissed lightly, the silence in a way so loud it was keeping me up. No reply, although he let out a heavy breath as he shuffled on the other couch, T-dog on the chair in the corner.
Rick and Lori were with Carl, no doubt wade awake, watching their little boy fight for his life, I dragged , myself up slowly, once again I wasn’t going to get much sleep.

I crept into the other room, knocking lightly on the door and entering, wincing as it creaked lightly once I noticed Lori was asleep, Rick and Hershel however were still sat upright, Rick’s eyes sunk deeply into his skull. “How is he?” I asked quietly, taking a couple of steps in.

“He’s stable, if he keeps getting blood and avoid infection he should he fine.” Hershel answered, Rick barely moving, his hand pressed hard against his forehead. I noticed the tube sticking out from his arm, he had given far too much blood and I said as much.

“I came in to offer you mine,” Rick bit his lip but nodded gradually, allowing Hershel to remove the needle from his vein and moving to another chair, letting me take his place.

“So long as your sure you’re o-,” I nodded quickly, I had known my blood type since I was little, because it wasn’t the same as his and that had always meant a lot to me stupidly.

“I’m sure, and it’s fine...I want to help him.” Hershel obliged, ignoring my slight wince as he pressed the needle through my skin, the irritation remaining slightly as the blood began to leave me slowly.
“Thank you.” Rick grumbled lowly, his head beginning to droop. Hershel met my eyes and smiled lightly, the candle in the corner flickering erratically.

“You should have woken me sooner,” He complained, quickly pulling out the needle and escorting me to the living room, “You were giving blood for far too long, I’ll wake one of the girls up to get you some food, you need to raise your blood sugar.” He bumbled off, his footsteps heavy on the stairs.

“Morning,” Beth greeted a few minutes later, her blonde hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, “Dad said to make sure you eat,” I smiled, following her after I had woken up Glenn and T-dog who both looked disorientated, “Time to wake up.” I sang, poking Glenn hard in the fore head and giggling as he swatted at me.

“I’m not really hungry,” I lied to Beth, who was searching through their cabinets, my stomach betrayed me just seconds later and she laughed, “Dad said you gave blood so you need to eat.”
“I don’t want to be a bother.” She rolled her eyes slightly.

“It’s nice to have people around who can be a bother...” she paused, looking uncomfortable, “You don’t get many...people nowadays.”

“You seem pretty protected from the Walkers here...”
“Walkers?”
“It’s the groups name for the...undead.”

“You think they’re undead?” I went to retort, cut off when loud engines suddenly became clear, the others were here. I turned quickly, heading past T-dog who ran in to tell Rick and out the front door, Beth close behind me.

Dale exited the RV, he looked tired, his hat pulled over his head again, “How is he?” he asked nervously, Rick stepping to the forefront of the gathering group. I saw the way Daryl was eyeing everyone up, what Beth had said was right, it was rare to meet ‘people’ nowadays.

“He’ll put through.” Lori said, a forced smile on her face, “Thanks to Hershel and his people...and...Shane. We’d have lost Carl if it weren’t for him.”

I turned, I hadn’t see him since last night, he had shaved his head.
I frowned slightly, facing back towards the others and noticing Daryl looking at me, following my previous gaze back to Shane.

Dale leant forward and grabbed Rick, Carol swinging her thin arms around Lori as Rick explained what had happened. “Stupid accident.” He finished, allowing the introductions to begin.

“ I need to know he died for a purpose.”
Shane stuttered, rubbing his newly shaven scalp, avoiding Patricia’s eye contact, avoiding everyone’s, He began speaking, rambling.

Bullshit.

“Run he said...I take the rear I cover you.”
Bullshit. I tried to look at everyone’s reactions, see who suspected but they were hard to read.
Dale met my eyes quickly, frowning deeply. I nodded, glancing at Shane’s back.

Maybe he suspected as much as I did.

“When are we planning on heading back out there?” Glenn asked as we made our way back to the farm house.

“This afternoon.” Rick said shortly, no doubt wanting to check on Carl, not that any of us would blame him, although apparently he had woken up shortly, a really good sign.

“We can’t stay in their house either, it’s not fair. We have tents, we can find somewhere to set up.”
“That patch under the trees is flat, shaded, big enough, I’ll get started.” Dale popped up, and the group started to split, Glenn letting out a slight huff and grabbing my arm lightly.

“You want to help me set crap up?”
“More than life itself.” He rolled his eyes, pulling a face at me.

“ You alright? You were shooting some major evils earlier.” I shrugged, popping my lips as we began to set up one of the tents, waiting a couple of minutes.
“I don’t think I believe what Shane said.”
“Why would he lie?”
“Why does he have scratches all over his neck?”

“He said he jumped from a window, they could come from anywhere... look,” he placed the pole down and walked a couple of steps closer, holding my eye-line, “Shane has never done anything but look out for the group, I know I told you about him and Lori but.... Rick was his best friend... is his best friend, and he’s a hothead but he’s a good guy... I don’t get what you have against him, and I know he came across as a dick but that isn’t him, okay?”

I nodded slowly and regretfully, maybe it was so much because he reminded me of my father than I disliked it...no, it was more than that, I felt it in my gut.

Clearly I was almost alone in that belief.

And I resolved to keep my mouth shut, give Shane a chance, however much I didn’t want too.
“Ariella? Can you give me a hand with this damn thing?” Andrea asked, swearing over her tent.

“No problem,” I lifted my voice, forcing a smile on my face, “I never thought all the times my granddad made us go camping would help out so much.”

“He was in to that sorta stuff then?” I nodded,
“That, and he was fairly sure that one day technology would raise up and enslave us.” Her brow furrowed, “Are you joking?”

“I wish I was.” I muttered.

“My dad watched I:Robot and went on a similar rant,” Glenn added in, having successfully put up one tent, “T-dog, seriously it’s fine, sit down.” The taller man groaned loudly but obliged,
“How are you feeling?”

“Fine,” he murmured, “Just feel damn stupid, of all the ways for a guy to nearly die with how shit is now... from being stupid and cutting his arm.”
“You know we’re all really glad you’re okay.” Andrea half scolded, “We just need to find Sophia, before...”

Before...

Maggie placed a map in front of a bunch of us, it made sense, to lay out the area, Shane seemed to agree, “At least we know what we’re doing now.”

The map was split into sections and a plan was formulated, split into groups, and leave signs of where had been checked with fabric so we weren’t mindlessly overlapping.

“You two aren’t going anywhere, you both gave far too much blood, you wouldn’t last five minutes hiking in this heat without passing out,” Hershel scolded the eager me and Rick before turning to Shane, his ankle was still messed up from the night before.

“Just me then,” Daryl breathed, planning his route. Shane offered to drive up to the highway, see if she had headed back but it was decided we would start properly tomorrow.
Shane argued we needed guns, knives couldn’t guarantee anyone’s safety anymore.

“I’d prefer you not carrying guns on my property.” Hershel said, Shane bit but Rick shot him down, there would be no guns loose on Hershel’s land.
But the woods was another matter.

“And if we found her and she’s bit, what do we do then?” I frowned, taking a step back and wincing slightly at Rick’s answer.
“You do whatever you gotta do.”

More plans were made, none of which included me, I sighed, I wanted to do something, but Hershel was right, I felt like shit. I was exhausted, starving and woozy if I was honest.

“You got a date Glenny-boy,” I answered once the small group around the car dismembered, “Later on you gotta help that Maggie girl get some stuff,”
“Seriously?” he moaned, “I always get stuck running off place.”

“Least you can do something useful,” I countered, bending down to help Carol some more.
“You helped Carl,” she said quietly, “You could have saved his life, don’t be hard on yourself sweetie. We’ll find her.” She finished her sentence with a slight smile, standing now the tent was erect and heading back to the cars to grab the sleeping bags.

I sighed heavily, I still felt extremely responsible for the fact her daughter was out there, and watching as Daryl set off, as Andrea and Shane went to do whatever they were.
I felt useless.

I had just finished setting up one of the tents when Maggie came over, “If you’re bored you can give us a hand... there’s a well further up, found a Walker in it we need to get rid of.”
“Charming,” I said sarcastically and she nodded, smirking.

“Only if you’re up to it though.” There was a hint of a challenge in her words and I accepted it, trailing after her.

Finding a major flaw in the plan when it included lowering Glenn down there on a rope.
“You do always get stuck doing this shit don’t you?”
