You Can't Do Things Without People Anymore

Sophia

The group walked over to the barn with Shane furiously leading the way. He looked into a crack in the barn and let of an exasperated breath pacing back and forth. "You can't tell me you're ok with this? For Christ fuckin' sakes Rick!" He yelled.

"Calm down Shane. Let me talk to Hershel, we have to respect his farm!"

"How the fuck you goin' to tell me to calm down when we have a barn full of walkers sleeping next door to us!"

They continued on with the argument, Dale explaining to them that Hershel thought of these walkers as 'sick people'. Shane started talking about moving on to Fort Benning knowing that Hershel wouldn't approve of us killing of these walkers.

"We can't leave my Sophia behind." Carol argued speaking up after.

Shane chuckled mockingly. "I'd hate to be the one to break it to you Carol but I think it's time we start considering other possibilities."

She gasped tears forming in her eyes.

"Shane, we're not leaving Sophia behind." Rick said sternly.

"We're close to finding this girl, I just found her damn doll a few days ago." Daryl joined in.

Shane rolled his eyes. "You found a damn doll Daryl, that's what you found."

"Man, ya don't know wha tha hell yer talkin bout!" Daryl yelled back angrily.

Rick tried to calm them down but Shane continued arguing. "And lemme tell you som'thin else man. If she was aliv' out there and saw you comin, all methed out with your buck knife, them geek ears around your neck she would've ran in the other direction!" That's all it took for Daryl to start trying to push past Rick to get to Shane.

"Daryl!" I yelled trying to stop him but with no avail. They continued trying to push past us to get to one another. I shoved Shane away. "Don't touch him!"

"Look here little lady, why don't you try talking sense into your redneck boy-toy!" He shoved me back harder causing me to trip and fall back.

Daryl shoved Rick away and got close enough to Shane and punched him right in the jaw. "Don't ya ever fuckin' touch her ya son of a bitch!" He yelled furiously.

Carol helped me up. Rick got in between them again trying to prevent Shane from retaliating. I stood in front of Daryl. "Daryl, stop it already!" He looked down at me still just as mad before backing up.

"Let me talk to Hershel." Rick said trying to reason with everyone, mainly Shane.

Daryl scoffed and walked away towards the horse stables. I followed behind. I walked into the stable seeing Daryl trying to pick up a saddle, flinching by the weight. "Stop you're gonna hurt yourself."

He grunted. "I'm fine."

I rolled my eyes. "Hershel said you need to heal."

"Yeah, well I don care." We heard the stable door creak as Carol came into view.

I smiled at her sympathetically to which she returned and looked at Daryl. He was now trying to put the saddle on one of the horses.

"Rick said he was taking up the trail today again."

Daryl looked over at her. "Well I jus can't sit here an do nuthin." "Daryl, we don't know if we're gonna find her." Our heads shot over at Carol who was beginning to tear up again. "I don't know." She said a little more quietly.

Daryl stood there probably just as shocked as I was. "What are ya talking about?"

"You're just gonna end up hurting yourself again." She looked over at me before continuing. "We can't lose you too." She said including me knowing she was referring to the loss of my little brother.

I looked down as tears formed my eyes too. "She's right." I whispered.

Daryl looked at us both in disbelief. He pushed past me looking back as he threw a saddle to the floor hurting himself. "Are you ok?" Carol asked concerned walking over to him.

"Jus leave me be!" He yelled back angrily holding onto his side. He looked over at me before walking off. "Stupid bitches." He mumbled exiting the stable. Carol looked over at me as a tear escaped my eyes.

----------------
I didn't talk to Daryl as the day went on, hell I hadn't seen him either. I was up on the RV acting as looking again, this time with Glenn. It was quiet until Shane came along asking for Dale who had just left after asking us to go get something for him. Shane walked over to the woods pissed off soon after. We looked at each other in confusion. Shane was really started to give me a bad vibe. He was acting a lot more confrontational not to mention more psychotic than usual.

I looked over by the house and saw Daryl appear with Carol holding a flower. Normally seeing something like this with someone you are starting to have strong feelings, would've made me jealous, but to my surprise, I wasn't. Carol was such a sweet lady in need of affection and with Daryl being so focused on finding Sophia, she seemed truly grateful. Besides, with Daryl's mood swings, who knew if we were really anything to each other so it wasn't my place to act that way. Sure we've kissed a couple of times but I had no idea what was going on between us. Glenn and I climbed down and walked over to the rest of the group.

"Am I the only one takin this seriously?!" Daryl scoffed. He looked over at me and frowned. His attention turned to Shane as he walked back towards us. "Oh there he is!" Daryl stated mockingly.

Shane walked up to Daryl and handed him a rifle. "Are you with me?"

Daryl looked him in the eye before nodding and taking hold of the rifle. "Ye." Shane started handing guns telling us we had to secure this farm and protect ourselves. He started walking over to the barn, us following behind.

Rick, Hershel, and Jimmy soon appeared holding two walkers close. We gasped as Shane walked closer to them. "You've got to be fuckin' kidding me Rick!"

"Let's just talk about it."

"Talk about what?! Hershel, these things aren't sick!"

"They're people, you need to treat them with respect!" Hershel tried to defend.

Shane put his gun up towards the walker Hershel had and pointed. "Ok, so if they really are people then why doesn't this phase them?" He shot the walker in the chest. "Why didn't it fall back?!" He shot it again. "People would've fallen back bleeding by now, why is it still comin?!"

"Shane enough!" Rick bellowed.

"You're right, that is enough." He stated blowing it in the head finally. Hershel stood there in shock. "It's time we get serious here! It's not tha same anymore Rick! Enough risking lives trying to find a dead little girl! Enough sleeping next door to walkers! Enough.." He walked over to the barn breaking the locks trying to open it.

"No brother don't do this!" Rick yelled trying to convince Shane. Carol and Lori stepped back with Carl in Lori's arms.

"Stay back." Daryl said looking over at me as Shane picked off the last lock barley breaking it open. I ignored him and pulled out my gun as I stood in between him and Andrea. He frowned and grunted before focusing back to barn.

Soon after, a group of walkers filed out and one by one we shot. Rick stood by with the walker he came over with until Shane looked back and shot it in the head. I shot at the last one looking over at Daryl. He nodded and looked back to Shane. Everything was quiet until we heard the sound of shuffling in the barn continued by a moan indicating another walker. Everyone's eyes were on the barn and guns were up as the last walker appeared within view. It was a little girl with a bite wound to her neck. Everyone froze as she made her way over hungrily.

"Sophia!" Carol cried out running over.

Daryl caught her and grabbed onto her as they dropped to the floor. I looked back wide eyed. Carol started sobbing uncontrollably as we stood there afraid to make a move. Rick looked down before walking up to Sophia as she came closer. Tears began to escape my eyes as I heard Carl let out a cry, Lori begging him not to watch. Rick put his gun up and pointed it to her head. She growled one more time before Rick pulled the trigger, her fragile little body hitting the floor. All that was heard now were the cries from Carol.

-------------
The death of Sophia really took a toll on the group. I could see it clearly in everybody's faces, especially Daryl's. We did a proper burial for Sophia along with Hershel's wife and stepson. Carol refused to be part of it, saying her little girl died a long time ago. Daryl came for a little before walking off into the woods, crossbow in hand.

I looked over as he walked past some trees, finding myself following behind. He started to pick up speed as I tried keeping up. He turned around in a flash pointing his crossbow towards my face.

"Daryl it's me!" I huffed, putting my hands up in defense. As I looked into his eyes, I saw tears built up as if he was on the brink of a meltdown. He swallowed hard struggling to keep the tears in as he put his crossbow down and looked away. I walked closer to him slowly as he stood there stiff as a tree. "Daryl.." I whispered. No answer. "Daryl?" I said a little louder.

He looked over at me, a tear escaping his face before he reached out and pulled me into his arms. It took me about a minute to react to the hug as I embraced back. He buried his face in my neck sending chills down my spine. "I'm sorry." He mumbled into my skin.

"I'm sorry too." I whispered as I pulled back a little. He looked down at me with tear stained cheeks. I brought my hand to his face, him flinching a little, and rubbed his tears away gently with my thumb."You're a good man Daryl." I said sincerely looking up at him. He blushed a little causing me to smile leaning closer to him.

"Mayte!" Daryl pulled away from me within a few seconds, as he sniffed and wiped his face clean of tears. Glenn ran into view frantically.

"Ya have some shitty ass timin' Glenn." Daryl growled.

I nudged him to stop. "I'm sorry, really but Beth just went into shock and Hershel's nowhere to be found!"

"What? Is Beth ok?"

"I don't know, Maggie and Patricia are taking care of her. Rick and I are gonna go into town to look for Hershel. Maggie said to call you over... Please."

I nodded and looked back for a moment, enough to see Daryl frown and furrow his eyebrows. I mumbled an apology under my breath as I started walking out of the woods and towards the house. Glenn apologized a few more times to which I simply dismissed. Sure he has bad timing, but it really wasn't his fault.

Rick walked over to us as we walked past the camp. He looked over at me and nodded. "Lori and the others are in the house, please keep an eye on them while we're gone."

I nodded. "Sure, just please be careful."

He reached over and pulled me into a hug. "Thank you." He whispered.

They walked over to the truck and drove off. Over the course of the afternoon, I had a talk with Beth. She had locked herself in the bathroom and broke the mirror in an attempt to cut herself and bleed to death. Maggie, Lori, and I stop her in time, breaking the door open to see a bloody and Beth bawling. Lori also mentioned when she brought her some food, Beth tried hiding the knife. This had to stop, we couldn't lose anyone else right now either. I stayed in the room as Maggie and Lori went off to find Andrea and started arguing. Maggie told Andrea to never step foot in the house or go near Beth again. As they came back, Lori looked over at me as if wanting to tell me something and Maggie sat on the edge of the bed by her sister. Lori then walked of and out of the house.

"Mayte, could you please bring a glass of water?" I smiled and nodded heading into the kitchen. As I poured the water into a cup, I saw Lori walking into the woods in the direction where I'm pretty sure Daryl was still at. I walked back into the room and handed Beth the glass. "Need anything else?" They shook their heads. "I'll be right back ok?" I walked over towards the woods running into a teary-eyed Lori. "Lori, what's wrong?"

"Nothing."

I frowned. "Did Daryl do something to you?" She shook her head as a tear escaped her face. "Lori, please."

She looked up at me and sighed. "I asked Daryl if he could go look for Rick. I'm really worried, I can't lose him again." I nodded knowing the feeling. "Daryl said he was through being our 'errand boy' and to go look for him myself." I furrowed my eyebrows. "I have to go look for him."

My head shot up. "What? Lori you know as well as I do that it's dangerous especially in your state."

"How-"

"Regardless of how I know. It's getting late." I said trying to reason with her.

"I can't just sit here and be worried sick about him!"

I stared at her for a moment before sighing. "You can't go alone Lori... I'll go with you."

She looked back at me wide eyed. "No, it's best if I go alone."

I rolled my eyes. "All of you are so stubborn." She smiled a little. "I promised Rick I'd keep an eye on you so whether you like it or not, I'm coming with you."

Lori nodded gratefully and pulled out keys to a car, walking over to start it up. I ran into my tent to grab my gun and knife and ran back into the car.

"Thank you." Lori whispered after a few minutes of the drive.

"Don't mention it. Especially to Daryl."

She gasped a little. "Oh my God. Daryl's going to kill me."

I rolled my eyes. "Daryl isn't going to do anything, I'm nothing to him so it shouldn't matter."

"Apparently he doesn't think the same way."

"I don't care what he thinks."

She looked over at me. "Sure you-"

"Look out!" The car swerving was the last thing I remember before I blacked out.
