Diamonds in our Bones.

To Kill Bill-Part One.

“I am sure that the group was heading that way, to the other side of the quarry.” I informed, pointing towards the direction we needed to go. I turned around to see Daryl, Glenn and T-Dog who looked ready as they ever will be. I am still questioning for their reason of coming with me: Do they really want me to join their group? Why are they risking their life for a girl they barely know? But the times wasn’t right for them to be answering my questions. Daryl stood beside me and looked thoughtful.

“The other side of the quarry, huh? Glenn, didn’t you say there was a house at the opposite end?” asked Daryl, looking back at the Korean man. Glenn nodded which cause Daryl to look at me. “Is there a possible chance that Bill and his group his stationed there?”

“Yeah, probably. Hopefully, they don’t know about your group.” I said, walking towards the direction of the killer’s supposed location is.

“Do we have to kill everyone?” asked T-Dog and I sighed, sadly.

“They are type of men who will avenge for their fallen comrade. If we want to kill Bill, we have to kill everyone that comes in our way.” I explained and Glenn muttered something from behind me.

“I can handle killing the dead like that. But living people? I don’t know…They have souls in them.”

“Just see them as if they are the un-dead. One way or another, they are going to die. And they will probably want to die by our hands instead of getting eaten alive by the zombies.” I hopped onto a fallen log and stood on it. I chuckled as I recalled what Glenn said later on. “Glenn, there is no such thing as souls.”

“What do you mean?” asked T-Dog.

“The ‘soul’ is just a candy-covered term for the conscious. That is all. If you are a freaking serial killer, your conscious is the way of the serial killer. There is no such thing as having the thoughts of a serial killer but having a soul of a pure saint.” I explained and Glenn thought about it. “Okay, let me ask this. What is a soul?”

“The soul is what makes you…well, you.” explained Glenn and I smirked.

“But isn’t that what conscious is?”

Glenn was stumped which caused the other two men to guffaw. I patted Glenn’s back and continued our trek. As fast as the good came, it went out the window just as fast. I am putting these guys’ life at risk.
They shouldn’t have been so stubborn. I could defeat them by myself with just my bow and arrow and my assault rifle. I may not look like it but I am powerful with my weapons. I know what to do and what not to do. They are underestimating my skills. I hate when people do that.

Somehow that reminded me of the conversation with Rick before leaving:

“What have I done?” I asked, as silent tears rolled down.

“What do you mean by that?”

“If I went somewhere else, I wouldn’t have caused the killer group to be anywhere close to your group. Now, look what happened. Your group is getting ready to protect themselves because I kept on running away from them! I should have killed them way back then. I jeopardize your whole group!” I said, angrily, wiping away my tears from my eyes. What the fuck, tears? I am angry and you are making me seem weak to Rick!

“You didn’t jeopardize anything, Emma. It’s my fault, too. If I decided that you are not needed, I wouldn’t have shown you the group.”

“You shouldn’t have saved me either from the walkers. I could have finished them by myself. Were you undermining my prowess to protect myself?” I asked, walking really close to Rick. “Because, last time I checked, I am surgeon. And you know what’s good about surgeons?” Rick looked confused, not answering. “We are the best killers.”

Rick realized that I could be dangerous as much as I could be nice. “Emma, I never thought of you as weakling. But no matter how strong you are, you are always are need of help. Daryl and I didn’t come and killed those walkers because we thought you were weak. We came to help you so know you got someone trustworthy behind you.”

“You barely know me and here you are talking about trustworthiness. Why?” Rick sighed, and looked to his right. I followed his eyes to find Lori, Shane and Carl huddled together, talking to each other.

“After the apocalypse, strangers don’t talk about protecting the other group like as if they belong to them, like you did. Strangers would do anything to worm their way into the group and steal from us. While you were in the RV, we didn’t handcuff you. That was a test. All you did was read a book when you had the chance to open the drawer in the kitchen to find a handgun in there.” Rick explained, smiling. It shocked me. The whole thing was a test to know that I won’t endanger anyone in the group.

“That was a test? You know beforehand that’s not who I am.”

“Daryl and I know. People like you are extra rare.”

We kept on walking through the forest, all of us in our own thoughts. I glanced at Daryl before I stepped over another fallen tree. I didn’t even ask him to join this little crusade. In fact, he was the one who recruited himself, Glenn and T-Dog into this dangerous mission. From my knowledge and my observation, no one in the group “liked” Daryl. They trust him but it doesn’t mean they have to like him. I don’t understand why they don’t like him. He is loyal and caring (in his own way, of course) and actually listens to you, unlike Shane.

“Let’s stop for a minute okay. We are half way there but we need to figure out how we are going to execute our killings. We can’t just go in from the front door and start blasting. On what Emma had said, we are outnumbered. We have to be careful and cautious.” Said T-Dog and all of us agreed.

“I think it’s best if Emma was the one to kill Bill because she is the only one who knows how he looks like. First we need to figure out how many rooms there are in the house. After, we need to stake out how many members are in this group. After we do that, we double back to our base that we will mention when we get to it. When we are gathered, we will figure out how to infiltrate. Sounds good?” Daryl asked and we all nodded.

“Let’s go figure out where we should we have our home base.” I said and we continued to tread through the forest, killing stray walkers who decided it was a nice time of the day to take a stroll through the woods. Three against a whole group of merciless killers. What was I thinking? I should have grabbed Rick, too. Morales, Shane, Jim, Jacqui and Andrea could still protect the group.

“Three against a whole group…a whole group of trained killers.” I whispered to myself and I got terrified. Spoken in my head, it sounded bad enough but speaking it out loud was just terrifying. I felt a hand on my elbow and I looked up to see it was Daryl.

“We are also group of trained killers. Now, are you undermining our killing prowess?” he asked, jokingly. I gave him a confused look. “I heard what you and Rick were talking about. I agree, the surgeons are the best killers.” I blushed. I thought we were whispering but then again, it’s Daryl.

“That chinaman may look small but he has a sharp bite. Took down four walkers at the same time.”

“Korean.” sang Glenn and Daryl ignored it. “Emma, we are a strategized group. That’s how our big group is surviving.”

“We should have grabbed Rick, too.” I said and Daryl shook his head.

“If he were to come back alive from this mission, Lori will slit his throat.” Explained Daryl and a whole bunch of new questions arose in me.

“What is up with her anyway? Is she always that crazy?” I asked, looking at the three men. Glenn and T-Dog looked really uncomfortable but Daryl gave a shrug of ‘I don’t give a shit’.

“She is not crazy. She is a self-centered, arrogant cunt. She expects Rick to bow down to her in every way possible. And I am sure she is banging Shane in the background.” Replied Daryl which caused the other two men to choke on their own saliva. “You guys are blind! You don’t see that two-timing bitch go ‘hunting’ for mushrooms at the same time Shane goes for ‘hunting’ squirrels? Even a walker would know what’s going on.”

“Does Rick know?” I whispered and Daryl thought about it.

“I think he is getting bits of pieces of their affair here and there. Rick better find out before anything happens, like, I don’ know, like Lori getting pregnant with Shane’s baby or something like that. I am telling you. We already got shit going on in the camp. I don’t need no baby daddy drama goin’ on.”

“I agree, dude.” Glenn pipped up, nodding. “A baby in this world? That’s like putting raw meat on ourselves for the walkers. If they were to have a baby, what then?”

“They should decide on killing it.” I said in a tone as if I was telling how the weather was. Glenn looked at me as if I was alien. “There are several reasons. First, you must be dumb ass to bring a baby out in this world. Second: baby food is hard to get. Third: that baby is going to be loud. Fourth: We don’t have time changing his or her diaper.” I counted the reasons in our hands. Glenn made an understanding face as he realized that I was right. “I know it sounds cruel but bringing a baby in this dangerous world is crueler.”

“I guess, the condom still applies after the apocalypse…guys! The house!” whispered T-Dog, pointing ahead of us. We all crouched down and looked through the bushes to see the said house. It was two story house and on the driveway was a black SUV. Even though barely, we could see movements in the house from the windows. We decided that where we were standing now will be the base. We also decided that Glenn should be at the base.

With everything decided, we checked on our guns. It’s kill or be killed scenario. I glanced at the Daryl and we made eye contacted. He gave me his nod that made me stand my ground. “We will come back after we decide on how many men there are. All right? Be careful, guys. I better see you three at the base.”

It took me forty-five minutes to scout out the side of the house. From my own knowledge, two of the three rooms in the house is unoccupied while the third room held three men---three familiar looking men. Anger gripped my mind like a parasite as I watch the men drink some type of beverage and talking to each other. Something on the top of my eye caught my attention and I looked up. There was two silhouettes upstairs, laughing. I saw one of the guys throw his head back in laughter and his hair swayed from the sudden movement. I sucked the air through my clenched teeth as the realization set in.

Bill.

I wanted to string my brow up with my arrow and shoot him right here and there but that will endanger Daryl, T-Dog and Glenn. I don’t want harm coming to them because I let my emotions take control of me.

Deciding that my side of the house is fully analyzed, I turned around and took the long way back to home base. It took several minutes from killing the undead and avoiding sudden movements to disturb the birds but I reached the base safely. Glenn was crouching down, nervously rubbing his hands. I came through and evidentially, I scared the shit out of him.

“Oh, shit!” Glenn whispered/screamed and I snapped my index finger on my lips.

Be quiet! Be any louder, you will attract the men and the walkers. We don’t need that right now!” I hissed, not unkindly. He nodded fast, a blush creeping up on his face. “Look, they have no reason to stumble into our base if it’s a normal day for them. Make it seem normal.” When I said that, the bushes in front of me and beside Glenn slightly rustled, which caused me slip my fingers on my bow tightly. I made eye contact with Glenn and mouthed ‘shhh’ to him and he nodded.

“Don’t shoot. It’s T-Dog!” whispered the said man. I let go of my bow as T-Dog slowly emerged from the bushes. “I didn’t want to startle you two.”

“Neither do I.” the sound of Daryl’s voice crept out behind Glenn who squealed. “I am actually for Glenn for staying behind. He is going to warn them before we even enter the house.” Glenn blushed, glaring at the redneck.

“Not everyone is for killing someone. He got used to killing the undead because they have no acknowledgments of the real world. He didn’t kill the living. Not yet.” I defended him and Daryl looked at me. I smirked at him because we both knew that he was stumped for words. He flipped me off and walked away; he, too, was smirking nonetheless. I looked back at Glenn and he gave me appreciating smile.

“Anyways, back to the main thing. I saw five people on the eastern side of the house.”

“I saw none.” Replied T-Dog.

“Three on my side.” Daryl replied.

“Hopefully, there is only eight. Here is what we are going to do. I know for sure that Bill and probably the leader of the group is upstairs in the main bedroom. Their group members, the three I know of, are in the room adjacent to the living room. Looks like a study. Your three was probably in the kitchen. How fast are you at pulling the gun from your holster?” I asked Daryl.

“I am fast, really fast but not fast as Rick.”

“This is what we are going to do. We are going to split once we enter the house. Daryl and Glenn, you guys head towards the kitchen. T-Dog and I will head to the study. If there are wanderers around the house, kill them silently. If the house is alerted, we will be in big trouble. Any of you guys have silencers? I have two. I am going to use one and I will give one to Daryl. Make less noise as possible. We are walking into lion’s den with bows and guns while they have assault rifles. Once we are done downstairs, let’s get back together by the base of the stairs. Sounds good?” I planned, looking expectantly at my comrades. Daryl was giving me this uncomprehensive look. “What?”

“Are you sure you are a surgeon and not an Army general?” he asked and I laughed as I rummaged through my backpack to grab the two silencers. “I am serious. How does a surgeon know how to infiltrate an enemy base?” I gave him one and he started to screw it on his Glock 19. I grabbed my Desert Eagle and screwed my silencer on it.

“I don’t know. Movies?” I suggested, shrugging. “Does it count that my father is an ex-soldier?”

“There you go.” He said as he eyed my gun with wide eyes. His next sentence was slightly slower. “Your plan sounds foolproof. Watcha’ think, T?” asked Daryl, looking at the man who was looking at me intently. He nodded.

“Guys, you can still back out.” I tried again, looking at the three men who volunteered to help me in my crusade. They all looked up from checking their weapons if they were ready or not.

Shut up.” The three men said simultaneously, even Glenn who tend to be quiet when he was nervous. I just shook my head and put my gun in my jeans. I pulled out my bow and with an arrow ready. I heard a click and I knew Daryl just cocked his crossbow, ready to be shot.

“Let’s kill this motherfucker.”

I'd love to see a follow up - Shane and Lori coming back, and Rick and Emma are married or something. Awesome story.
