Unexpected

Just Like Lucy

The camp was more comfort and security than she had experienced in a long time and most of the people were dead nice. However she felt like an outsider. She couldn't really connect with these people after being on her own for so long.

Her leg was healing, slowly so she wasn't made do anything too straneous around camp, despite her protests. She usually just kept an eye on the kids, Carl and Sophia. Carl was Rick and Loris son and Sophia was Carols daughter. Lori was the woman who had brought her the baked beans and helped her bathe awkwardly. Carol was the grey haired lady who had a horrible husband. The husband, Ed was always giving out to her and Dana didn't like it at all.

There was a grey haired old man that Dana found quite pleasent called Dale. He owned the RV. The chinease guy was called Glenn. He was cool and closer in age to her than most people there. Andrea, Amy, T-dog and Jacqui were also really cool. She liked Andrea, she had been an attorny and Dana thought that back before all this started they would have had good debates. Amy was also pretty close in age to her but she was a few years younger and always arguing with her sister Andrea.

Then there was Shane who hadn't said much to her, he seemed to have a lot of responsibility like Rick. There was something weird going on between them even though she had heard they were suppose to be best friends and former collegues. Maybe this monster infested world had put a strain on their relationship.

Then there was Jim and Merle. Jim avoided making eye contact with her and she thought that maybe he had been through an ordeal, perhaps bigger than the ordeals the rest of them had endured or maybe he just couldn't handle it. Merle was a bastard. Plain and simple. Making racist and sexist jokes and comments at any opportunity. She nearly choked on her cold rice the second evening she had been at camp when he called Daryl "brother". She couldn't believe someone so rude could be related to the Daryl, the man that saved her. No one really paid attention to Merle except T-dog who was usually the offended party.

They all reminded her so much of her family and friends. And despite trying not to think about them she would catch herself looking at Sophia and saying "she's just like Lucy" or looking at Ricks worried face and thinking of her father. Then she would feel the stab, the stab of grief. She would try to busy herself quickly and would put her mind off it. She desperately wanted some alcohol, not because she was dependent, but isn't that what everyone did when they didn't want to feel? Get ridiculously drunk? She had only been drunk once in her life but her best friend Laura had brought her home and put her to bed before she did anything stupid.

One day, on the third day since she had arrived at camp Sophia came skipping on over. A thought crossed Danas mind on how weird it was seeing children again. She hadn't seen one since....she stopped herself and turned her attention to Sophia.

"Can you fix my hair please?" she asked holding out a dirty bobbin. Her hair was long and brown, quite like Danas herself.

Also just like Lucys.

She felt a sting prick behind her eyes and cursed herself. Keep it together you fool she told herself.

"Sure thing," she smiled accepting the bobbin and turning Sophia around. She plaited her hair again for her. The whole time she couldn't help but think about how she used to do Lucys hair. By the time she was finished she felt a tear run down her face and hastily wiped it away.

"Thank you Dana!" she turned around smiling then she spotted Danas face "What's wrong?"

Dana let out a shaky laugh, "Nothing, just got something in my eye is all,"

"Mum says that sometimes too but I still know she's crying,"

Clever girl.

Dana laughed again and said "Well I'm fine, I really do have something in my eye, did I mention how beautiful your hair is?"

I have to keep it together she thought furiously

Sophia skipped off over to Carl and Dana was left to her own mind again. She focussed on the events around her instead of the past. She mused about how Carl and Sophia would be a cute little couple. Even if they were only ten.

She also thought about her own disasterous love life. In truth, it wasn't that bad. Just very limited. She had two boyfriends in her whole life. Her high school boyfriend Chris who was so sweet. They had just drifted apart when they went to college. She used to miss him. Now she was used to it. She wondered if he was still alive. Then there was Alex. Her cool college boyfriend. He turned out to be a fucking jerk. She wondered if he was alive.

"Hey, Dana..."

She turned to her left to see Daryl standing there, holding out some crutches. She looked at him, wide eyed, a little surprised. They hadn't really talked since he had brought her here.

"Here," he insisted holding out the crutches out to her. She accepted them and stood up. She had been using a big branch to help her get around the last few days but it wasn't very convienent.

"Thank you," she smiled at him. He gave her a tight like smile that wasn't quite a smile, more like an acknowlegment. She slipped her arms into them to find they were a bit big and her elbows sticking out.

"Oh....wait..." he bent down at her side, she got a little fright because she had no idea what he was doing. Then she realised she was adjusting the crutches for her.

"Where did you find these?" she asked him, leaving him with the crutch he was working on and then sitting down with the other one to try adjust it herself.
"You didn't go into a hospital did you?" she thought aloud. He couldn't have done that, the place was bound to be full of the dead walkers.

He shook his head, "No, in a house I was checking out,"

"Oh," she said and thought about who had owned these beforehand. Some elderly person? A mother? A father?

"Thanks," she said again when he handed her the crutch again. She got up and tried them again.

"Perfect," Dana said testing them out, walking around.

Daryl watched her making her way around in a circle on the crutches. Sophia came running up to her and exclaimed loudly. She said something Daryl didn't quite catch and then Dana laughed. Actually laughed. He hadn't heard her laugh yet. It sounded nice.

He shook his head a little, realising he was staring at her. She was quite a bit younger than him, probably a college student. He had never gone to college. He shouldn't be looking at her like this, he thought to himself.

However he felt a need to help her out, make sure she was okay. Truth was, he had looked for crutches for her since yesterday. He had gotten lucky that day.

He looked at her again. She was slender, quite tall for a girl and had wavy long brown hair that was a bit frizzy. She had a kind face and wide green eyes. She was wearing some of Amys clothes, a white shapless t-shirt that said "BOOM" and green combat shorts that hung loosely on her legs and over her bandage.

Sophia ran off squealing again and Dana went after her, telling her loudly not to shout or scream too loudly. Sophia ran over to another little girl and the sat down, starting to pick daisies.

Daryl turned around hastily and made his way to the woods.

Dana went back and sat on the bench, thinking of her encounter with Daryl. He had gotten her crutches. That was so nice. He may not look like the friendliest dude, but he was sweet.
She saw him dissapearing into the woods and stared at his retreating back. He was well built. She found herself looking at his arms, big and strong. She shook her head. What is wrong with you? she asked herself. One minute she was on the edge of a breakdown, the next she was staring at a guy at least ten years older than her. She needed something to do.

She then turned her gaze to Sophia who was skipping off into the woods and out of sight. Dana sighed, that girl was a handful. She got up and made her way to follow her. That's when she heard Sophia scream.

Something snapped in her. She knew it was a walker. She just hoped Sophia was screaming with fright and hadn't been bitten yet. She would not see another little girl bitten. She couldn't, not like Lucy.

She made her way as fast as she could towards the source on her crutches. She was surprisingly fast but she ponder on it. She came to the scene.

Sophia was backed up against a tree, crying as a tall walker advanced upon her, growling.
Dana didn't think, she just acted.

She ran over to the walker and hit it with one of her crutches. It turned to her.
Shit, what do I do? she panicked and pushed the walker away from Sophia again, looking around.

"Run!" she told her, "Go get somebody!"

But Sophia just stood there, paralysed. No one had come yet.

The walker was determined that it was going to taste some flesh today. Dana could see it in its movements, relentless and impatient. Almost like a real human being.

But it wasn't human anymore. It was a monster. A monster like the one that had teared her little sister to shreds.

Dana smacked the walker across the face so hard with her crutch that it landed with a bang on its back. She then raised her crutch, breathing heavily and brought it down on its face with a sickening crunch. She was panting heavily and she brought the crutch up and down until there was nothing but a disgusting bloody mess left at her feet.
