Endure

Cages

As soon as we recognized who was lying at our feet, Daryl and I abandoned all discretion and jumped up to greet them. Jude’s men had brought back five Alexandrians; Nikki, Toby, Glenn, Michonne and Carl. They had brought back a pretty good selection of people, all triggers for Rick; a pregnant woman, a child, the first person he met after the turn, the woman he was closest with and his son. They had done a great job of collecting their hostages for ransom.

“Nikki! Toby! Are you guys okay?” I helped Nikki to her feet and tried to assess the damage to the others. They had been roughed up, too. Even Toby had fresh bruises and cuts. Seeing this caused something in me to snap and I ran up to the fence, throwing my entire weight against it.

“You can’t do this to us, you mother-fuckers!” The group of men who had just deposited my friends in the cage stared at me and smiles formed on their faces. They turned on their heels and walked away. “You can’t leave us in here, you fucking tyrants.”

“Ain’t that a pretty mouth, you got there.” One of the men turned around and walked toward me.

“Boys hold the others back. I wanna have a little chat with this little bird here.”

Two men held Daryl back and the others controlled the crowd while the man grabbed my arm, pulling me out of the enclosure, before allowing the gates to be slammed back behind him.

“Meredith!” Daryl called my name and I reached for him.

Without warning, I was struck on the side of my head with the butt of the man’s gun. It sent me tumbling forward. I was punched in the stomach and buckled over. He pulled me up by my hair and slammed his fist into the side of my jaw. I felt every bone in my face pop and something shattered.

“Let her go! Let her go!” I heard my family shouting from the cage and the gates were being bombarded by them.

I was enduring the beating of my life when suddenly the blows stopped and I came crashing down to the ground, unable to move. At first the only sound I could hear was Daryl’s voice calling to me, but soon it was drown out by the sound of footsteps approaching us.

“What the hell is going on here?” Jude asked from next to me.

I tried to pay attention to what was happening, but the only sound I could hear was my blood pumping in my head. I felt like I was swimming in a pool, but instead of water, I was floating in the density of the air surrounding me. I tried to fight it. I tried to push through the pain that I was feeling, but I couldn’t. I gave in, my eyes became heavy and I let myself sink.

**********

“We gotta get her up. If she’s out for too long she might not wake up at all.” I heard several hushed voices and felt hands gently tugging on my body.

“Meredith. Can you hear me?” Michonne asked.

I opened my eyes and the first thing I noted was that we were no longer outside. I tried to take in my surroundings. My fingers were laced into shag carpeting. It felt dirty and synthetic. My eyes scanned the structures near me. There was no furniture. My eyes flicked up. Wood paneling. There was wood paneling on the walls. Like in a trailer. We were in the trailer.

The next thing I looked for were faces. I tried to take inventory. Michonne was there. I saw Nikki standing behind her, clutching on to her belly. Carl held Toby's hand a few feet away. There was a pattern here. Women and children. There was no Wayne. There was no Glenn. There was no Daryl.

I tried to say his name but couldn’t. I couldn’t form words yet. I grabbed on to Michonne’s hand and tried to pull myself up. When she realized what I was doing she assisted, placing her hands on my back and pushing. When I was in the sitting position, I scanned the room, looking for him. He wasn’t there. My heart shattered in my chest.

“He’s not here, Mere.” Nikki, knelt down beside me. “They took him. They took Wayne and Glenn, too.”

“Where?” I choked out, finally finding my voice.

“We don’t know. Jude brought us here and then took the guys somewhere else.” She leaned me against the wall and jumped up to peek through the bars that enclosed us in the room. They had taken the door off and replaced it with more bars. Cages. More fucking cages. I couldn’t take it anymore.

I pulled myself up to my feet and drug myself across the room to the bars. I pushed her aside and when she tried to turn me back around, I shoved her away. I leaned against them, using them to hold myself up and began to shake them and kick them. Tears stung my eyes and I screamed. My throat burned but I screamed anyway. The sounds were lost in the nothingness that was the hallway in front of me. No one came. There was nothing but darkness.
