Enid

The next morning we packed the truck and trailer with people and with our packs before setting out into the great unknown. Rick drove and the little ones, Judith and Toby, sat squeezed between the driver and Michonne. Enid, Carl and Grace sat in the bed with the bags and a grumpy Eugene. The rest of us squeezed onto the trailer, cooling our heels.

Rick, although I’m sure he was once a great driver, somehow managed to hit every pot hole and bump in the road, making hanging on essential. The ride was anything but comfortable. Our bodies were tangled over one another, legs crossed, arms pinched, hair pulled, but without a doubt, we preferred this method of travel over any other. The proximity to Daryl’s body near mine brought a small comfort to the situation along with the fact that I was approaching my son a lot faster today than I had yesterday.

I could officially say that I was making progress. I spent a lot of time looking at Daryl’s hands and daydreaming. I couldn’t stand to look at the ground as we drove, knowing that I’d immediately get sick. Instead, my mind played a vision of what it would be like to find Jack over and over again in my head. I saw his big eyes shining and his sweet smile beaming. His little body running toward me while the wind teased up his curly brown hair. My mother was behind him, walking towards me shaking her head as if to say ‘I told you not to leave’. It was so clear and realistic that if my ass wasn’t numb and I didn’t have to squint to keep the image from fleeting, I would have suspected that the vision in my head wasn’t a fallacy.

I was jolted back into reality when the trucked slowed to a stop and Daryl’s hand grasped my knee. My eyes flew open and I craned my neck to see what the problem was. One by one, everyone around me stood and looked over the hood of the truck. Less than a football field away, a herd of fifteen or so walkers were headed straight toward us. They had seen us, there was no way around that and the sound of the motor was alerting even those in the back.

“Get up in the bed of the truck. Go now.” Daryl hissed, directing everyone in the trailer “Carl, y’all stand up, make room.”

The kids did as they were told and stood toward the front of the truck, hanging on to the luggage bars. Everyone but Daryl and Wayne were able to jump up on the trailer but as we approached the walkers, they stood back to back, armed with two long knives, ready to raise hell if they needed to.

“I am not going to slow down. I’m going to keep it steady, everybody hang on to one another and watch out.” Rick called from his open window.

The tension was thick outside and must have been the same on the inside of the truck because Judith began to cry loudly. I could hear Michonne attempting to comfort her and Toby following her lead. Suddenly, I heard the first walker get taken out by the grill of the truck.

As we passed, walkers reached into the truck, grabbing at our legs and arms. Blood splattered against our skin as Rick ran over the bodies. I looked over just as the truck lurched forward and Enid lost her balance, falling out of the truck. I reached for her and grabbed her arm just as she went down. I toppled over the edge with her.

My head smacked the ground but my hand never let go of Enid. She was screaming and trashing, but then again so was I. Walkers had flocked around us and we were being grabbed and snapped at.

“Don’t stop fighting, Enid! Keep kicking!”

For a split second, I glanced over at her and when I looked back, a big walker with broken jagged teeth grasped my neck while attempting to bite me. I propped both feet up onto it’s chest and kicked with all of my strength. The big sucker flew backward onto the concrete. I jumped up to my feet and, with my vision clear momentarily, I saw that Daryl and Wayne were running toward us.

Enid demanded my attention so I began grasping the necks of the walkers that were on top of her. I didn’t have a weapon and was forced to use my body as a resource and pin the walkers down. The men swung their knives and took out as many as they could and before long, all of the walkers were at least hindered enough to give us time to grab Enid and get her back to the trailer.

The truck sped forward as we checked the young girl’s body. Blood was everywhere, but there were no indications of whether or not it was her’s or not.

“Are you bit?” Daryl asked me quickly.

“I don’t think so.” I responded, distracted by my work, checking Enid.

He stopped what he was doing and began to run his hands over my body, lifting my clothes and checking for any wounds. For a split second, his face was mere inches away from mine, but as quickly as it had approached, it retreated.

“I found it.” Wayne said, turning Enid over to reveal the spot where the back of her neck and shoulder met.

A large chunk of flesh was missing from this spot. Blood poured from the crevice and onto the trailer bed.

“No!” Carl cried as he saw the wound.

He pushed his way to the back and over the edge of the truck and onto the trailer. I clutched his arm as he jumped forward, in an attempt to keep him from falling over the edge. The young man grabbed the girl up into his arms and held her while the life faded from her Earthly body.

Daryl, Wayne and I sat beside him while he rocked her back and forth. As the sky darkened, so did Carl’s expression. Eventually, the body went limp in his arms and he took a pocket knife from his jeans and jabbed it through the girl’s eye sock and up into her brain.

“We’ll be stopping soon to fill up the gas tank. I can dig a grave for her pretty quick.” Daryl said quietly to the boy, placing his hand on his shoulder.

“What for? Ain’t nobody going to be back to visit it if you do.” He said, darkly, before pushing the body over the edge of the trailer onto the ground. The three adults around him all reached out toward her, but Carl backed up against the wall and pulled his knees against his chest. He sobbed silently as the night fell.
