Endure

Heat

The urban wastelands that Daryl and I had once trudged through were now behind us. In our horizon was an expansive and vast forest filled with terrors of every sort. Screams from living creatures and the walking dead echoed off the sides of the mountains and were amplified by the trees. Fear was something that we had learned to put behind us, but with the snow falling and the nights growing longer, I felt it begin to creep back up in my psyche.

“You’d think that with all of his repeating, I’d remember the route that Rick had picked out.” I mumbled to myself as we quickly walked along a narrow path, barely visible beneath the layer of snow that covered the ground.

“I don’t think it would make much difference if you did. We wouldn’t be able to see the damn road, no way.” Daryl replied.

Our only plan was to head west. If we did that, eventually we would come to a town with a map and then we’d be able to pick up where we left off. Direction wasn’t nearly as important as surviving the impending blizzard. Both of us knew that at this point, there wouldn’t be any casual encounters with shelter or lucky finds of food or medicines. We were on our own and would have to become one with nature.

It was still dark out and if I had to guess it was probably around midnight. I was beginning to rethink my decision to leave at the moment that we had. That’s the problem with moving and being nomadic. There was always plenty of time to rethink what you’ve done. I needed something to break the silence. I needed Daryl to talk to me, but I didn’t want to ask for it.

“Meredith?” Daryl stopped.

“What?” I asked turning back to him.

“It’s fucking cold.” Daryl whispered.

I stared at him, blinking. I wasn’t sure if that was his way of breaking the silence or if he had, in fact, lost his mind and was now going to state obvious facts for the rest of his life.

“You’re very perceptive, Daryl. Would you like a cookie?” I asked through a layer of bitterness.

“Do you have one?” He smirked back and then begrudgingly continued on.

“Well… I do, but it’s not the kind that you were thinking of.” I snorted to myself, thinking back to an impromptu anatomy lesson with Jack after he returned home from school asking what a vagina was. For a lack of better terminology, I had instructed him to call lady parts “cookies” until he was older. That might have been one of my least successful moments as a parent, but it did severely diminish my son’s request for baked goods for a while.

“Do I even want to know?” Daryl asked and I told him the story.I could almost feel the heat radiating off his cheeks when I said the word “vagina”.

“That’s definitely not what I was asking for.” He said.

“Well, you could have it if you wanted it.” I said, quietly. “It would certainly warm us up a bit.”

We had grown used to the sounds of the forest and now listened only to the sounds of the crunching of the snow beneath our feet, and although it was dark outside, occasionally we would pass an area where the trees would break and the moonlight would reflect off of the snow. It was during one of those moments that I looked over at Daryl to see that he was already looking at me.

I looked back at the ground. The playful moment had passed and how I was truly feeling the exhaustion that had taken over my body. The freezing air that enveloped us was weighing down on me, as well, leaving me breathless at times.

I felt rough fingertips slide into my open hand and I entwined mine between them. I felt a small tug and realized that Daryl had stopped walking and was now standing still, looking down at his feet.

“What?” I asked in a whisper.

Instead of a verbal answer, Daryl began walking toward me. He peeked at me through his bangs and when he was standing directly in front of me, he pressed his forehead against mine.

I didn’t dare say a word. I had an idea of what he was thinking, but I knew that if I said something, he might change his mind. Daryl was like that. He could be scared off as easily as the rabbits that he was so infamous for hunting.

He pressed his lips against mine and, almost instantaneously, a dense warmth began to run through the course of my veins from my lips to the tips of my toes.

There was something about this encounter that made me nervous and feeling exposed. We hadn’t been intimate with one another in over a month and, aside from the one intense encounter after Enid’s death, I had always been the one instigating it.

He wrapped one arm around me and the other, he inched beneath my sweatshirt to my breast. My body perked up beneath his touch and a I twisted my fingers into his hair. He invaded my mouth with his tongue and I returned the gesture, until we were both panting.
I felt him growing against me and I shivered for more than one reason. There was a large tree behind me and I turned toward it, dropping my jeans to my knees and bracing myself against it. He entered me from behind, before draping his body over mine.

As he plowed into me, I guided his hand as he circled my clit with his fingers. My body began to shake and Daryl clasped his hand free hand over my mouth as I came, muffling the sound of my cries. With one final thrust, he grunted with satisfaction and then collapsed on top of me. We stood there, leaning against the tree, attempting to catch our breath as steam rose from our bodies.

I stood up straight and he kissed the nape of my neck as I pulled up my pants and buttoned them up. I leaned into him and looked up, past the tree and into the distance.

My eyes adjusted and I saw a subtle movement in the brush. It was a walker about fifty feet away from us. He was tall and slender and moved more erratically than the walkers before, as if it’s limbs were frozen. Each step it took, echoed off of the branches. Daryl heard it’s movements and followed my gaze.

“We need to go.” He whispered and we quietly continued in the opposite direction.
