Dead and Gone (A Daryl Dixon Romance)

Chapter 22

Both of us are out of breath coated in sweat. He lays his head on me as the sun starts to rise; we watch the room fill with light. I smooth his long hair down feeling the back of his wet neck. My hand slides down his back as my fingertips touch his past, the rough lines all over and it makes me want to cry.
"I love you Daryl Dixon..." I softly say.
"I love you too, Grace." He mumbles back. He then gets up and pulls his pants up zipping them and buttoning them. I sit up and Daryl helps me. I try to pull my pants up as well and he helps me noticing something on my stomach.
"What in the hell is that?" He asks.
"Nothing, just a scar..." I drop my head. He picks up my shirt and hands it too me.
"Sure it is..." I watch him turn away and grab his sleeveless shirt off the floor. Did I just make Daryl upset? He turns back to me and gives me his long sleeved shirt.
"I had just turned twenty and I was going to marry my high school sweetheart. He was going to college and I still stayed with my parents at home. My parents didn't agree with it because I was still young but I knew that I loved him...so when we announced we were getting married I was five weeks pregnant," my eyes water and it's hard for me to continue but I do. "My parents we're devastated that I wasn't married when I got pregnant, they were always so religious so not only was my brother a sinner for killing himself but I was too. I was so happy until my fiancé just couldn't take my parents shit anymore so he left me and his child...honestly I don't think that's the real reason he left me. Then the worst happened I lost the child, about a month before it was due and they had to do an emergency c-section." I shake my head and pull my shirt on along with Daryl's. "My parents never forgave me and I don't even know if my fiancé is even alive, if he is I hope those lifeless things rip him to shreds." I say coldly.
"I'm sorry...about all of it." Daryl drops his head and he looks up his eyes watering a little. That's a first, I knew his heart wasn't stone cold. I think it's just hard for him to be sympathetic, to me that's okay. All I do is smile and throw my arms around him, hugging him tight.
"It's the past...it doesn't matter anymore."
"I wish the present didn't matter either." He says pulling away from me picking up the crossbow and putting it around him. I slowly limp to pick his leather vest up but my foot gives out and I fall to the floor. I bite my lip because of the pain.
Daryl rushes to help me. "No, I'm fine." I say looking up at him.
"You're a tough girl Grace, I like that." He says with a smirk.
"Gotta be, the world ain't nothin' but shit." I push myself to my feet again. Then I start to button his shirt up and hand him his vest. He takes it and puts it on my shoulders and I slide my arms through.
"You're my Angel Grace." He smiles, and kisses my forehead. I slowly walk to a bedroom and search for shoes. I get lucky and find some black boots. Sitting on the bed I take my cowboy boot off and drop it on the floor sliding the black boot on my foot that isn't injured. "Need help?" I look up to see Daryl leaning on the door frame.
"Sure." He quickly walks over to me and helps me get the other boot on.
"Still hurts pretty bad?" He asks stuggling to get the boot on without hurting me.
"Yeah, but I can manage," I wince in pain. "Ow!"
"Sorry..."
"It's not your fault." He looks up at me and pushes the boot on the rest of the way. Then he helps me to my feet and we go to the kitchen and eat some canned food. After that Daryl hands me a knife and his gun then we grab our bag and head back to the church.
Daryl grabs my hand as we walk back to the church. All I can seem to think about is this morning, his body grinding against mine. I squeeze his hand tight and he squeezes mine back. "You never told me your story, Daryl Dixon."
"I don't have one."
"Your brother, what happened with him?" I ask.
"Got killed, he ain't my damn problem anymore that's all that matters."
"His name?"
"Merle, he seemed to be a lot like my father. The biggest redneck prick on earth." He replies rather harsh. "He'd sit on his ass drinkin' smokin' and then beat the hell out of us! Take it out on us!" He starts raising his voice...remembering.
"Daryl, please don't be so loud!"
"You asked so I'm givin' you a damn answer!" He snaps. He lets go of my hand and starts walking in front of me. I slowly walk behind him.
"Daryl, I didn't know it bugged you that bad to talk about it. I just thought that maybe sense I shared my story that you'd share yours..." I cross my arms over my body. He turns around taking the crossbow off his back. "You could at least say the sex was good this morning, or something." He walks back to me pushing his face into mine.
"I'll tell you my story when I wanna, and it wasn't just sex...I made love to you." He says the last part quite breathy which sends chills throughout my body. He pushes my hair out of the way and softly kisses me. We start walking again and I can't help but smile walking behind him. As we walk he shoots an arrow into a walkers head that's on the side of the road and continues on walking without grabbing the arrow. I pull it out of the walkers head and walk proudly behind Daryl or at least try to.
