Of Blood and Breath

Chapter 1: Black

A young man walked into a gas station store looking like a regular Georgia hick. Based on the bandana around his messy brown hair and the leather vest he wore over his dirty white t-shirt, he looked like the type of teenage boy who lived off trouble and indecent girls who would take to any boy that wanted them. Though in his deep blue eyes there appeared to be a kindness hidden under a tough surface.

He strolled slowly across the isles, seeking out his desired items, and slightly listening to the radio emergency broadcast.

"More cannibalistic attacks have been reported," the reporter stated. "Government forces are doing everything they can to get to the bottom of things meanwhile CDC scientists are doing their best to contribute. Some CDC researchers are suggesting that these attacks are connected to a virus. Whether these theories are true or not has not been confirmed."

"Viral infection," the man at the cash register scoffed as the young redneck approached him. "Ain't no infection. City folks gone crazy. They always was. We's fine out here. Ain't no crazy cannibals here and ain't no one's infected."

"If you say so, old man," the young man said.

"Oh, it's true, son. "You can ask my pa 'bout that. Weren't no man smarter than him. Damn shame that he died from-," the gas station clerk stopped, holding a pack of cigarettes that the younger man attempted to buy. "I can't sell these to ya."

"Sure ya can," the young brown haired man replied. "You're just choosin' not to."

"It ain't even legal. Yer just a boy."

"I'm about to show you how much of a 'boy' I am," the young man threatened.

"Is there a problem here?" the young man's friend, Jake asked as he walked into the shop.

"Hell yeah, there's a problem," the young man answered, "this old bastard won't sell me my cigs."

"Is that right, Dixon?" Jake asked. "You think I should go get the boys and we could teach this old bag of bones a lesson?"

"I think so, Jake," the young man named Dixon responded as Jake left the shop the gather their friends.

"I'm gonna have to call the cops," the older man warned.

"The cops?" Dixon laughed. "Don't ya think the cops are a little busy with the cannibals?"

"Dixon," the old man said under his breath.

"Ya heard my name before?" the young Dixon asked, raising his eyebrows.

"Yer Merle Dixon's boy, ain't cha?"

"How perceptive of you," Dixon said sarcastically as Jake and his friends walked in the shop.
"They call me Forrest."

"That asshole stole my wife!"

"Huh... guess no one will miss you," Forrest shrugged. "Now, I'll give you one last choice, sell me the cigarettes or I will permit my friends to let out all their anger and hatred on your old, aching body."

The old man stood still.

"Very well then," Forrest said, "have it your way. He's all yours, boys."

Forrest's friends began attacking the poor old man.

"Fuck you, boy and fuck yer fuckin' father!" the old man

"Sounds like your wife is a little busy doin' that, don't it?" Forrest responded.

"Fuck. You."

"Now, my boys and I would like to thank you for free gas and the 100% discount on all items in your store," Forrest said as he lit a cigarette and brought it to his mouth.

"You'll never get away with-" the old man recieved a hard kick to his head from Forrest's friend, Sam.

"Get away with what? I didn't hear ya," Forrest said. "...Old man?"

"Shit," Sam swore. "I don't think he's breathin'."

"Ya fuckin' idiot," Forrest said, rushing to the old man, placing two fingers on is vein to check for a pulse. "You fool fuckin' killed him. You was just supposed to teach him a lesson, not kill him."

"Calm down, Forrest," his friend, Andy, consoled. "Ya said it yerself, didn't cha? The cops are too busy with the cannibals. They ain't gonna know."

"It ain't about the cops, Andy! This is a man's life!"

"Ya should've thought about that before ya told us to teach him a lesson!" Andy countered.

"I never said to kill him," Forrest breathed.

"Look, what's done is done," added Jake. "We'll dump his body in the river. No one will know."

"No," Forrest said. "I know what to do. Sam, take his body out to the truck."

"Why me?" Sam complained.

"Because you're the one that fuckin' killed him, ya dumb motherfucker!" Forrest said.

"It'll be yer mother I'm fuckin'," Sam said as he picked up the old man's lifeless body.

"Fuck you, Sam, you fuck your own mother," Forrest remarked.

"Whatever, man."

Forrest turned away from Sam and back to Andy and Jake. "You two, start gatherin' whatever shit in this store we want."

Forrest, Andy, and Jake began gathering food and other trinkets from the small gas station. Andy ventured behind the cash register and began stuffing his pockets with cash. His wandered down into the counter. He reached down and grabbed a shotgun, which had been nestled and hidden.

"I found a gun, guys!" Andy exclaimed.

"Ya can't even shoot!" Jake laughed. "Remember when we went huntin' with Forrest's dad and ya had that high-power, scoped rifle and there was that buck like ten feet from ya and ya missed it. How the fuck did ya miss it?"

It bothered Forrest. They had just killed a man. How could they possibly be laughing right now? Forrest had always felt out of place in this town. There's not a lot you can do for yourself when you're seventeen and stuck in a one-horse town, in a Georgia desert, surrounded by forested mountains with a bunch of hillbillies of whom you happen to inevitably care about.

"On account of that, I'll take it," Forrest said grabbing the shotgun from Andy's palms.

Forrest and his friends finished gathering what they had needed and piled into their pick-up truck, Forrest driving, Andy in shotgun, Jake and Sam in the back.

"So, what's the plan, F?" Jake asked.

"We're headin' towards Atlanta," Forrest answered. "We gotta find one of them cannibals and we'll give the old man to it and it'll just look like the poor bastard was killed by the cannibals."

"Smart," Andy said.

The four of them and the dead man drove for several miles away from their hometown, towards the city.

"We've been driving for miles!" Sam complained. "I'm tired of sittin' next to a smelly as dead man."

"This is your fault, Sam," Forrest said. "You shoulda thought twice before-"

"Shh!" Sam interupted. "Ya hear that?"

"Hear what, Sam?" Forrest replied. "There ain't nothin'."

"He's breathin'."

"He's dead, ya dumb asshole," Andy said. "You've always been paranoid, ya crazy inbred son of a-"

Sam's screams filled the interior of the rusty truck.

"He's eatin' his fuckin' face!" Jake yelled.

As Forrest attempted to turn his head and see for himself, he lost control of the truck. It went tumbling to the side of the road, Forrest, Andy, Jake, Sam and the dead man in it.
Then everything went black.
