Of Blood and Breath

Chapter 28: Triggerfinger

Forrest sat in his tent, cradling his wolf pup in his arms, holding the bottle to its tender lips. He sensed a figure outside his tent. He cautiously curled Jack into the blankets and grabbed his tomahawk.

“Who’s out there?” he called.

“’S Shane,” he heard a gruff familiar voice reply.

Forrest unzipped his tent to see Shane before him, the bags under the man’s eyes made him seem tired and his eyes buzzed around every which way.

“Listen,” he said as Forrest stood before him. “I heard you and Dale talkin’ earlier and the old man’s right. It is obvious.”

“What is?” Forrest replied, playing dumb and not really wanting to talk to Shane at this point.

“Don’t play that game with me, boy,” Shane threatened. “We all seen the way you look at that girl. At least I have and I know you know I look at Lori the same way. The thing is Rick and Jimmy won’t be ‘round forever.”

“No one will,” Forrest replied.

Shane sounded dangerous, as if he was plotting something that Forrest should have been concerned about.

“Guys like them ain’t gonna last very long in this world,” Shane continued. “Not like us. Jimmy’s dumb as a doornail and Rick’s always concerned ‘bout doin’ the right thing. The only thing he should be concerned with is protectin’ his family. That’s all that’s left in the world that matters. It’s only a matter of time ‘fore both of ‘em are gone and guys like us can have what we want.”

“Whatever, man,” Forrest said, walking away from Shane.

Forrest wasn’t sure how to process all the things Shane was saying. He seemed like his mind was all over the place and Forrest thought it was best that he maintained distance from the older man for now.

The next morning, Forrest woke up inside his tent to hear the rumbling of a vehicle. He got out from under the covers of his tent slowly, stretching his aching back. He unzipped his tent and looked outside to see that Rick, Glenn, and Hershel had returned. Forrest could see T-Dog peering into the back window of the car.

“Who’s this dude?” T-Dog asked.

Rick and the others brought someone back with them?

“Randall,” Rick answered gruffly. “His little friends tried attacking us and they left him behind.”

“We couldn’t just leave him to be eaten,” Glenn added.

Forrest walked over to the car to see a young man tied up and blindfolded in the trunk.

“What’re we gonna do?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” Rick answered, agitated. “Let’s just put him in the shed and worry ‘bout it later.”

“Got it,” Shane said, opening the trunk and pulling the kid out, accompanied by T-Dog.

“Guys!” Maggie suddenly ran out of the house. “Beth’s gone!”

“What do you mean gone?” Lori asked.

“I dunno,” Maggie replied. “She was in her room and now I can’t find her anywhere around the house!”

“I’ll look ‘round the farm and the surroundin’ woods,” Forrest volunteered.

He returned to his tent and dressed up all the way and grabbed all his gear before heading out. He had a feeling that he knew where Beth might be.

He returned to the place that he had been to before with Beth and Jimmy. He found her tracks for sure, but she wasn’t in the exact place where she had killed her first walker a few days ago. He continued following her tracks until he made it to a large creek. Sure enough, there she was, sitting by the water looking like a ghost.

“Beth,” he said.

He knew she knew he was there, but she did not respond, but instead looked down at the water.

“Beth,” he continued. “Ya can’t jus’ go runnin’ off like that. Ya got people who care ‘bout ya back there.”

“What’s the point?” she responded. “I’ll be dead soon and so will all of them. So will you!”

“Ya can’t jus’ give up,” he reminded her, sitting down next to her. “Ya got ta believe that there’s somethin’ out there fer ya. Before all this I didn’t have nothin’. I was jus’ some fucked up depressed kid who didn’t have nothin’ goin’ fer ‘im. I know that before this the world was good ta ya and that ya were happy with the way things were. Now, I can’t change that fer ya, but ya can’t let the world ruin ya. Ya matter and ya got to jus’ pull through.”

She tilted her head upwards and looked at him. He felt some kind of greater power taking over his body and he lost control. He leaned in and kissed her, their lips meeting gently. Once he got pulled out of this trance, he backed up.

“M’sorry.”

“Me too. It jus’ ain’t me. It ain’t me.”

“Le’s git ya back ta the house.”

He stood up and helped her up, beginning to walk back to the farm.
