Of Blood and Breath

Chapter 3: The Promised Land

"46 miles," T-Dog announced as he continued driving towards Atlanta.

Jacqui was fast asleep in the front seat and Glenn was snuggled up in the supplies in the back of the van like a baby in a crib.

"T, let me drive," Forrest suggested.

"Nah," T-Dog shrugged. "You crashed that truck, real bad, F. Why should I trust you with the van?"

"You think I'm a bad driver," Forrest scoffed.

"Well, yeah," T-Dog responded.

"Come on, man, you're tired; Glenn and Jacqui are sleepin'; I'm wide awake back here," Forrest reasoned.

"You crash this van, imma fuckin' kill you," T-Dog joked.

"I'm scared," Forrest teased.

"Seriously, this van is all we got," T-Dog reminded him as he pulled over to the side of the road momentarily.

T-Dog ousted himself from the driver's seat and joined Glenn in the back of the van, allowing Forrest to fill the seat with his mass. He pressed his black boot covered foot on the gas pedal, turning the steering wheel with his young, rough hands.

"Hey, Forrest," T-Dog started.

"Yeah?"

"Sing me to sleep."

"Fuck you," Forrest joked.

The two laughed slightly together.

So this is what it was like. Forrest had never really befriended decent people before. He had always just associated with the impulsive rednecks in his town. It felt great to Forrest. He had only been travelling with Glenn, T-Dog, and Jacqui for a few days, but it was enough. This apocalypse really had just saved Forrest from his past and the unfortunate things that happened to him.

"Wakey, wakey, Baby Glenn," Forrest coaxed. "It's time to loot abandoned shops."

"What?" Glenn awoke. "Where are we?"

"Outside 'Lester's Armory,'" Forrest informed him, "on the way to Atlanta. 14 miles to go."

"We're just gonna loot this shop?" Glenn asked, sitting up. "Isn't that stealing?"

"Nope," Forrest answered. "It's the end of the world and there's no one here. Lester's probably already in Atlanta, we're just takin' what he left behind."

"Okay," Glenn said doubtfully. "What about T-Dog and Jacqui?"

"T-Dog just went to sleep about four hours ago," Forrest informed him.

"And Jacqui?"

"My experience has told me never to wake a sleeping woman."

"You've got to tell me that story," Glenn pleaded.

"Maybe another day," Forrest said as he led Glenn into the shop.

"Oh, come on," Glenn begged.

"Fine," Forrest said, realizing that there might not be another day, "but not until after we've looted the shop."

Inside the shop was what was left of probably several small groups looting the store. There were a few camouflage articles of clothing, some ammo, batteries, flashlights, guns, knives, and other useful tools.

"Ain't much," Forrest observed, "but it'll do. We'll gather it all as fast as we can and move on quickly to Atlanta. We don't want geeks showin' up."

"Yes, sir," Glenn yakked.

"Very funny."

Glenn and Forrest, the Asian and the redneck, gathered all supplies from the shop and mustered it all into the van.

"Geek," Glenn warned, witnessing one of the dead approaching.

Forrest raised his head towards the geek.

"Just one," he commented.

"Still dangerous," Glenn pointed out. "Let's go."

"Hold on," Forrest requested. "Let me test how sharp this machete really is."

"Forrest, let's just go," Glenn advised as Forrest approached the geek with his brand new machete.

He grabbed the geek by the greasy hair and stabbed the blade through his left eye.

"You like killing them?" Glenn asked, astounded.

"No way, man, I just figured it'd be better to get used to it. It was just one. Not like I was taking on a whole herd."

"Can we just go?"

"Yeah. You're driving."

Forrest swiftly threw Glenn the keys to the van and Glenn caught them, clasping both hands together.

Glenn climbed in the driver's seat, and Forrest in the back with T-Dog. As Glenn drove off, Forrest watched T-Dog awake.

"Is it just me or did the supplies multiply?" T-Dog asked.

"Go back to sleep, T-Dog," Forrest grumbled.

"Can't sleep in the back of this bumpy-ass van," T-Dog explained.

"Want me to sing you a song?" Forrest asked sarcastically, regarding T-Dog's joke from the previous night.

"Tell me the story now," Glenn chimed in.

"Story?" T-Dog wondered.

"You mean why you should never wake a sleepin' woman?" Forrest turned his head to Glenn. "Well, when I was about 12, my great aunt, Annabelle, was stayin' at our house for awhile and the old lady really loved to sleep, then one time I needed help with somethin', I don't even remember what, but anyways I went into the room she was sleepin' in and I kinda joke woke her up and it turns out she really doesn't like that. So, she picked me up by the back of my shirt and she took me to the bathroom of my house and the crazy old spinster just shoved my whole damn head into the toilet bowl. The toilet hadn't been cleaned for awhile, so it was quite unpleasant as you could probably imagine."

"That's so cruel," Glenn laughed along with T-Dog. "Damn."

"She was right for doin' it," Jacqui muttered, noting to the three males who accompied her that she was awake.

Forrest laughed at Jacqui's comment.

"I didn't think so, but now I know never to wake a woman ever."

"Seems like you would," T-Dog imagined.

"Guys," Glenn began. "I think we're here."

Forrest and T-Dog looked out the window and saw the city. It was surrounded by the military and people could be seen, living there lives regularly as they would in the city. It was amazing compared to the outskirts around it that Forrest and the others had experienced the previous few days.

Notes

This is one of the slower chapters, but it's focused on the relationships between characters.
