Of Blood and Breath

Chapter 5: Kin

"Where's my boy?!" Merle demanded an answer from his ex-wife.

He grabbed her chin and made her face him.

"He got taken away by those government pricks six years ago," the disoriented redhead responded.

Six years ago, Forrest was in the custody of Merle at the time and his little brother, Kyle was in the custody of their mother, Bonnie. Bonnie failed to care for Kyle and instead of giving the custody of Kyle to Merle because Merle was not his legal father, Kyle was taken away by social services and adopted out to another family. It was evident though that Merle was Kyle's biological father by their similar features.

"No, ya dumb, bitch," Merle began. "My other boy."

"Forrest?" she questioned. "I haven't seen him in almost a week."

"And ya didn't look for him?!" Merle asked angrily.

"He's your boy too!" Bonnie responded.

"That boy's outta control," said the voice of Hank O'Neil, Forrest's step father.

He walked with his usual stroll into the room with Merle and Bonnie.

"It don't matter how hard ya beat him, he just don't learn," Hank grumbled.

"What'd ya just say?!" Merle shouted. "YA PUT YER HANDS ON MY BOY?!"

Merle's temper took over and he threw a punch into Hank's face.

"HE'S A GOOD BOY!" Merle continued throwing punches into Hank's face. "YA NEVER PUT YER HANDS ON MY BOY!"

"Merle, stop!" Bonnie yelled. "Get yer asshole hands off my husband!"

"Shut up, bitch," Daryl said, walking into the room. "Yer dumb husband don't get ta beat nobody no more. C'mon, Merle he ain't even worth it."

Merle's fist collided with Hank's face one more time.

"I ain't seen enough o' you, Hank O'Neil," Merle spat as Hank cringed on the floor. "Ya best pray ya never pass me again or I'll kill ya, ya dumb inbred bastard!"

Merle looked at Bonnie once again before leaving.

"We gotta find my boy," Merle panted as he and Daryl left Bonnie and Hank's house.

"Where the hell is he?" Daryl wondered.

"Probably with those friends o' his," Merle guessed. "Let's go."

"Glenn, we gotta go," Forrest said as he packed his rations into a backpack.

"What? Why?" Glenn asked as he shut the door of Forrest's apartment. "Where is there to go?"

"My dad ain't here," Forrest explained. "Ya said if he wasn't here, ya'd help me look for him."

"Maybe he's on his way," Glenn reasoned.

"Then we'll meet him half way," Forrest replied.

"We can't just leave," Glenn said. "We don't even have our weapons."

"We'll just ask for 'em back," Forrest suggested.

"Look, we can't leave. Yesterday, I saw a guy trying to leave," Glenn began. "The soldiers said no, but the guy couldn't take that for an answer, so he tried running past them and the soldiers shot him! I don't want to get shot!"

Forrest looked at Glenn in disbelief.

"When was this?" Forrest asked, doubt evident in his voice.

"After they gave us our apartments, a soldier asked me to help deliver rations, and as areward I got extra rations, but I saw it happen," Glenn answered.

"Why didn't ya tell me right away?" Forrest asked.

"I didn't want to ruin your first day," Glenn said.

"Well, fine," Forrest said with an annoyed tone. "Ya don't have to come, but I sure as hell ain't stickin' around. There ain't nothin' for me here."

"What about out there?" Glenn addressed. "A cruel, agonizing death, getting ripped apart and eaten alive?! You can't go, Forrest."

"That's my dad out there!" Forrest yelled, frustration evident in his voice. "Now I don't know how ya do it in China, but 'round here, family is everything. I can't just leave my father behind."

"I'm Korean."

"Whatever!"

Forrest slammed the door and left. Based on the information Glenn gave him, he knew he had to be stealthy if he wanted to get out of here alive. He questioned whether or not he should attempt to sneak into the armory or not, but he decided that it would be too well guarded. He could find weapons later, he just needed to worry about getting out of Atlanta alive. He climbed up the many flights of stairs in his apartment building towards the roof. From there, he had a vantage point and could scope out the city. He looked at all the visible exits via streets, but they were all heavily guarded by soldiers. He'd have to find another way. His next idea was to travel through buildings and take an exit from a building. He spotted the perfect spot. There appeared to be a door on one building which led to a field outside the city with long grass. He figured that he might be able to crawl through the grass without being spotted by the soldiers. He'd have to navigate through many buildings until he got to the one leading out of the city and then crawl through a lot of grass.

He climbed back down to the bottom floor of the building, where he spotted a back door that was unguarded. He decided it was best to avoid the soldiers so no suspicion would be raised. He snuck out through the back of buildings until he had made it to the grassy field. He looked to his let and right, thankfully no soldiers had seen him, but to avoid any potential unwanted attention, the sixteen-year-old, going on seventeen got down on his stomach and crawled as he had seen soldiers do in movies.

Forrest was aware he was currently unarmed in this situation, which was rather risky in this world. As far as he was concerned it was worth the risk. This was, after all, his family.
