Daryl's Irish Destiny

Ireland Bound

Daryl wasted no time and called Niamh Cavanagh back in Newry the same day he spoke with the probate lawyer. He followed the international dialling instructions she had given him as he said he’d never called another country before. There was a strange double buzz ring on the other end. It rang twice and a breathless voice answered just after the third ring. “McGlinchey and Cavanagh, Niamh Cavanagh speaking. How can I help you?” He smiled at how the greeting sounded rushed. “Miz Cavanagh? This is Daryl Dixon in America…”

“Mr. Dixon, how are you? You received my pack then?”

“Yeah. M good thanks. Talked ta a lawyer too so I know yer legit.”

Niamh smiled at his gruff voice over the phone. “Good. Excellent. You have questions?”

“Yeah, I do. Now tha’ ya’ve found us an’ we can prove who we are, wha’ happens nex’?”

Niamh suggested he get a pencil and some paper to write down the next steps. While he was looking for that, she got comfortable at her desk and pulled open the Sean Robinson file. When Daryl was back on the line, she methodically explained the process, the steps involved and broke those down into what she was going to do and what he needed to do. Recapping at the end of the call, she confirmed. “So, basically, Mr. Dixon. If it was only a cash inheritance, we could have that wrapped up by the end of the month but because there is property involved, there is much more to be resolved. The bigger question is what to do with your great uncle’s property.” She paused for a minute considering the options that immediately came to mind.

“The estate can pay for it to be valued and sold or auctioned off as is. From the photos I’ve seen, it looks fairly run down which will definitely impact the sale price. It wouldn’t take much money invested though to improve it so it sells for a better price, it’s more the time involved. I understand you both have some experience in the building trade, it would be a way to maximise the sale price if you do plan to sell. You and your brother could come to Ireland and sort it out yourselves, we could charge your flights and accommodation to the estate so you’re not out of pocket. Or, the estate could hire someone to do that for you but of course that would impact the remaining inheritance.”

Daryl blinked with surprise. How did she know Merle and he had construction experience? He wondered how much about them she knew if she knew that much already. He coloured at the thought of what she may already know about them, some of the more colourful facts would certainly be part of public record, especially Merle’s run-ins with the law. He cleared his suddenly dry throat. “Lemme talk it over with ma brother ‘n I’ll get back ta ya on tha’.”

He explained everything as he understood it to Merle when he went to visit him at the weekend. “Ya gotta go there, baby brother. Go there, fix tha’ place up an, sell it fer more money.” Daryl had no surprise in hearing what Merle’s opinion was, he knew he’d want to make sure they came away with as much cash as possible. If that meant sending Daryl out of the country and out of every single one of his comfort zones, Merle would not hesitate to send him to the moon if he thought it necessary. “Ya know I cain’t go with ya. M stuck in this joint for ‘nother six months. ‘Sides, couldn’t get a passport now nohow, not as a ex-con.” Daryl was already resigned to go, he had known it was going to play out this way.

Daryl had never even been out of Georgia before, let alone out of the country so once again, he relied on Merle’s savvy lawyer, Andrea to advise him what he needed to do. Andrea was helpful and really intrigued that this painfully shy, gruff and rough-edged Georgia country boy was going to travel all the way to Northern Ireland on his own adventures. Adventures that Merle couldn’t accompany him on, or influence him in any way. She’d been Merle’s lawyer for too many years now to know that although the Dixon boys cared about each other, Merle clearly wasn’t a good influence on his younger, gentler brother, often bullying and berating him into criminal acts. It was just good luck that Daryl hadn’t been along on the robbery for which Merle was currently doing time.

It took about three weeks for Daryl to get his passport expedited and sent to him. Once he had it, he called Niamh to help him book his flight to Ireland. She was very helpful as always, arranged his flights and accommodation for him while he was on the phone with her. Daryl was humbled by her easy way and found he was growing rather fond of her accent. When she told him she would collect him from Belfast Airport and drive him back to Newry, he blushed at the tenor of excitement in her voice. She said she was looking forward to meeting him in person and he was amazed to think she sounded like she actually meant it.

“I’ll collect you at the airport. Can you send me a photo of yourself? I’ll send you a photo of me so we can recognise each other.” Daryl mumbled his agreement and said his goodbyes. Next time they’d talk it would be in person. Thick fingers fumbled with his new smart phone to find the camera app and figure out how to take a picture of himself and send that to her. Minutes later his phone beeped with an incoming message from Niamh. He opened her attached photo and his mouth fell open. She was beautiful. Dark red hair, sparkling green eyes, white skin with a smattering of freckles over her nose and cheeks. Her pink lips were pulled back in a natural smile, gleam of white teeth showing through her lips.

Niamh opened the photo attached to Daryl’s text and felt her chest constrict. Wow. Daryl Dixon was a very handsome man. He looked every bit as gruff as he sounded but Niamh wasn’t expecting him to actually be good looking. She had never fancied clean cut men, she liked men to look and feel like men. His long brown hair hanging in his intense blue eyes, high cheekbones, scruffy goatee beard all raised her blood pressure. Damn. She could look at him all day.
