Daryl's Irish Destiny

Diamond Cutter

By Thursday they had an email response from Piers Janssens in Antwerp. He was coming to Belfast in a week’s time and was hoping they would be available to show him the diamonds.Niamh and Daryl discussed the email and she responded that they would be available to discuss with him at his earliest convenience once he arrived in Belfast. They asked him to respond with the name of the hotel he’d be staying in and what day suited him best.A reply came quickly and named Monday lunchtime as a time for meeting. They could have lunch together and then head back to Hershel’s shop to look at the raw diamonds.

During the week they waited for Piers to arrive, the house had been stripped of all old electric wiring and plumbing and the new was going in.As both could be done simultaneously and each took about a week, the major bits of the work were done by the end of the week.Daryl appreciated the workmanship and professionalism the men displayed but got the impression they would normally have been lazier and less productive to pad out their wages and draw out the project but because he knew what he was doing and pitched in to do a share of the work himself, they had respect for him and didn’t try to pull a fast one.

Daryl had asked Niamh to help him select fixtures and fittings for the house and was largely pleased with the suggestions and selections she showed him.Friday of the following week the lighting fixtures and hardware were mostly in place as were all the radiators.Daryl had liked the big shower heads in Niamh’s house so much that he opted for the same fittings in the 3 showers in the house. Two of the bedrooms had large ensuite bathrooms, all bedrooms would have fitted wardrobes installed and the main bathroom was epically huge.Daryl installed a rain room style shower with two big rosette shower heads, body jets on 3 sides and even a bench to sit on.There was also a huge double sized tub with Jacuzzi jets that he put on a raised platform under the window which looked out over the side of the property.

Niamh was excited to see each room start to come together.Daryl was pleased with the progress as well and expected that in another week, he’d be able to call in the plasterers for all of the upstairs while they finished work off in the downstairs. The new kitchen going in the house he actually opted for the design service offered by the shop that sold him the kitchen. The designer had come to the house, took a variety of photos and then worked out a couple different designs on his computer. When Daryl and Niamh went to see what he’d created, they were thrilled with the old fashioned kitchen he had designed. It was in keeping with the feel and age of the house without making it seem old and dingy.

Monday came around again and Daryl and Niamh enjoyed their breakfast together before heading off to Belfast to meet up with Piers.Hershel came with him and they ate lunch together at the Crown pub, one of the oldest pubs in Belfast, known for its excellent pub food and pints.Daryl was pleased to find Piers a genial man about 20 years younger than Hershel and the two had worked together of and on for nearly 30 years. There was clearly great affection and camaraderie between the two men.

“I tell you, Mr. Dixon.” Piers began.“I had to check the calendar to make sure it was not April first when I received Hershel’s email.I thought he had to be joking that a find this large of such old stones had just walked through his shop door in your pocket.” Daryl sipped his beer and gave him a small smile.“Can you tell me the whole story of how you came to have these diamonds? It’s not that I doubt your claim, just that it’s so hard to conceive of something of such value just falling into someone’s hands.”Daryl obliged the man, telling the story in his own words, looking to Niamh to confirm certain points as he came to them. She would jump in with a thought or observation once in a while during his story but let him tell it in his own words.

When they finished up their lunch and walked back to Hershel’s shop, they kept the Closed sign on the door and kept it locked while Daryl let Piers view the stones.Piers confirmed what the first jewelry appraiser had told them. They had a mixture of white, pink and yellow diamonds. The weight of the stones once cut would range from 1 to nearly 3 carats.Piers wouldn’t know the value of the stones until they were cut because colour and clarity were just as important as weight in determining value. He told Daryl that he’d like to use his team to cut all the diamonds for him. With four cutters, including himself working on the diamonds, Piers would expect to have all the stones cut within a month.

He explained his fee structure to them and gave them a loose quote based on how long he thought it would take to cut all the stones. He said he would write up a detailed quote and send it to them by email. If they wanted to, he would be happy to sell the stones on once they were cut.He advised them to seek two additional appraisers in the industry who were not affiliated with him or Hershel to ensure he was confident in the valuations he gave once the stones were cut and appraised by him.

All in all, Daryl and Niamh felt the arrangement was well organised and feasible, they had been able to check that Piers Janssens was a member of good standing in his community and that helped them trust his suggestions. As they were saying goodbye, Daryl scooped up the diamonds and put them in their velvet pouch and back in his pocket.

Piers shook his hand and told Daryl how much he was looking forward to cutting his stones.“Stones of this variety and weight, depending on their quality could fetch as much as 15 million euro.If the quality is not low, it will still be at least 1 tenth that amount.”Daryl whistled low, thanked the man and they left on the promise he would email them the quote today and they could arrange the rest once a contract was signed.
