Apocalypse - The Walking Dead [1]

Chapter Five

While Morales and Rick went to talk with each other on the other side of the roof, the three women of the group were leaning against the edge of the roof, looking down at the walkers that were infesting the streets.

"God, it's like Times Square down there." Andrea breathed out.

"How's that signal?" Morales asked, looking down at T-Dog as he and Rick walked back over to the others.

T-Dog sighed after messing with the CB. "Like Dixon's brain--" He says, glancing in Merle's direction, "--weak."

In response, Merle raised his middle finger up towards T-Dog, who rolled his eyes in annoyance.

Morales let out a sigh. "Keep trying."

"Why?" Riley questioned, looking at the Hispanic and her brother, "There's nothing we can do. Not a damn thing."

"Got some people outside the city is all." Morales explained to Rick, "There's no refugee center. That's a pipe dream."

"Then she's right. We're on our own." Rick stated, agreeing with his sister, "It's up to us to find a way out."

Merle let out a scoff, catching the attention. "Good luck with that. These streets ain't safe in this part of town from what I hear. Ain't that right, Sugar Tits?" He asked, looking straight at Riley, who was rummaging through her bag, searching for something. "Hey, Honeybunch, what say you get me out of these cuffs, we go off and bump some uglies? Gonna die anyway."

Without looking at him, Riley continued to look through her bag, "I'd rather. Better than being with you." She retorted, giving him a cold glare before zipping up her bag and walked to stand by her brother.

"Rug muncher." Merle scoffed, watching her every move, "I figured as much."

"The streets ain't safe." Morales said to Rick, ignoring Merle, "Now there's an understatement."

"What about under the streets?" Rick questioned, looking at the Hispanic, "The sewers?"

"Hey, Glenn, Riley, check the alley. You see any manhole covers?"

Riley and Glenn quickly ran to the edge on the other side of the rooftop where the alley was. There was only was only two walkers but no manhole covers.

"No," Glenn replied as the two ran back over to the others, "must be all out on the street where the geeks are."

"Maybe not." Jacqui spoke up, before looking at Riley's brother, "Old buildings like this built in the '20s. Big structures often had drainage tunnels into the sewers in case of flooding down in the sub basements."

Riley looked impressed at the older woman. "How do you know that?"

"It was my job. Was. I worked in the city zoning office."

"Let's go check it out." Rick suggested, looking at everyone before looking down at T-Dog, "You stay here and keep an eye on Dixon."

T-Dog sarcastically saluted the cop. "Yes, sir."

Rick rolled his eyes before he turned to head to the basement with everyone, except Merle and T-Dog, trailing behind him.

Riley held a flashlight in front of her face as the others followed her to the basement and towards the dark, sewer entrance.

"This is it?" Morales asked, looking at Glenn for an answer. "You sure?"

"Riley and I really scoped this place out the other times we were here." Glenn replied. "It's the only thing in the building goes that goes down"

"But we've never gone down it." Riley added, "Who would, right?"

Without answering her question, everyone looked towards Glenn and Riley. They looked up when they realized everyone was silently asking them to go down, causing them to groan.

"Oh. Great."

Andrea shared a look with the others before looking back at the two. "We'll be right behind you."

"No, you won't." Glenn said, shaking his head. "Not you."

"Why not me? Think I can't?"

"No. That's not what we're saying, Andrea." Riley quickly interfered.

"Speak your minds." Rick encouraged the two, noticing Glenn's face.

Glenn let out a sigh. "Look, until now Riley and I always came here by ourselves-- in and out, grab a few things-- no problem."

"But now when we finally bring you guys, everything goes to hell." Riley added, earning looks from the others, except for Glenn and Rick. Quickly, she added, "No offense. If you want us to go down, fine, but only if we do it mine and Glenn's way. It's tight down there, so one of us will have to go down there."

"If we run into something and have to get out quick, we don't want you all jammed up behind us getting us killed." Glenn backing up Riley's statement. "I'll go and I'll take one person."

Rick was about to speak up but Riley cut him off. "No, not you, Rick. Since you have Merle's gun and knows how to shoot, you, Andrea, and I will be in the store, watching the doors and covering their asses."

"Morales, you're my wingman and Jacqui, you stay here." Glenn instructed to Morales and Jacqui. "Something happens, yell down to us, get us back here in a hurry."

Jacqui nodded. "Okay."

"Okay, everybody knows their jobs." Rick says, patting on his sister and Glenn's shoulders.

"All right, Rick, Andrea, let's go." Riley said, leading the two back to the store.

Andrea, Rick, and Riley made it to the main entrance store. While Andrea and Rick decided to have a conversation, Riley walked off to look around. Riley went over to the comic book section to grab a comic for Carl then headed over to the necklace isle. Katie's 12th birthday was coming up and she wanted to give her something special.

"See something you like?" Rick asked, walking behind his sister.

Looking up at him, Riley shook her head. "No, but it's for Katie. Her birthday is in two days and I wanted to give her something special."

"Oh, right. Are they where you are?" Rick asked her.

"Yeah. Shane and I got all of them out." Riley reassured her older brother with a smile.

Riley averted her eyes from Rick to a unicorn necklace that she knew Katie would love. If there was one thing that Riley knew what Katie loved the most, it was unicorns.

"Think she'll like it?" Riley asked, looking up at Rick.

Rick smiled and nodded. "I'm sure she will. Tell her it's from me as well. You're a good mom, Smiley Riley." He tells her, wrapping his arms around her shoulders and gave her a kiss on the forehead.

Riley smiled up at at him when he called her by her nickname he gave her when she was younger. She took the necklace and put it in her back pocket but the sound of glass shattering made is what caught their attention. To their shock, a walker had smashed the glass with a brick and walkers were close to getting in the store. Riley, Rick, and Andrea ran to the front of the store with their guns pointed up, ready to shoot. At that moment, Jacqui, Glenn, and Morales came back from their adventure in the sewers.

"What did you find down there?" Rick asked them, keeping his eyes on the doors and walkers.

Morales shook his head. "Not a way out."

"We need to find a way..." Andrea said as the walkers continued to pound the door. "And soon."

"Glenn, give me the binoculars." Riley told the Korean as they made it to the roof.

While Glenn did what he was told, everyone else followed Riley and Rick to the other side of the roof. Glenn came back and handed the binoculars to Riley, who took them and looked through them. She inspected the ground level at the construction sight below them.

"That construction site, those trucks, they always keep keys on hand." Riley explained to them as she passed the binoculars to Rick, who them passed it to Morales.

Morales glanced below them, noticing the group of walkers. "You'll never make it past the walkers."

"You got me out of that tank." Rick reminded, looking towards his sister and Glenn.

"Yeah, but they were feeding." Glenn argued. "They were distracted."

Rick began to think. "Can we distract them again?"

"Right. Listen to him man. He's onto something." Merle said, causing them to look at him. "A diversion, like on 'Hogan's Heroes'."

"God, give it a rest!" Jacqui snapped at him.

RIley rolled her eyes. "Do you have an off switch somewhere?"

"Come over here and I'll let you find it, Girlie." Merle smirked.

Riley was about to go over and slap him but was quickly grabbed by the waist from Andrea.

"They're drawn by sound, right?" Rick question, trying his best to ignore the Redneck.

"Right, like dogs." Riley nodded, shrugging Andrea off her. "They hear a sound, they come."
"What else?"

"Aside from they hear you?" Morales asked. "They see you, smell you, and if they catch you, they eat you."

"They can tell us by smell?"

"Can't you?" Glenn and Riley asked in unison.

"They smell dead, we don't." Andrea reminded, looking at Rick. "It's pretty distinct."

Riley stared at her brother and by the look on his face, she could tell that Rick was coming up with a plan.

"If bad ideas were an olympic event, this would take the gold." Glenn said from beside Riley as they were back in the store.

Rick was gathering supplies for the plan, which was to have him and Glenn to be covered in walker guts to disguise themselves as walkers. Riley didn't like the idea because she knew Rick and Glenn would be risking their lives for the others.

"He's right, Rick. Just stop, okay?" Riley agreed, walking to Rick was getting some protective suit. "Take some time to get this through."

"How much time, Riles?" Rick asked, turning to look at her, "They already got through one set of doors, that glass won't hold forever."

Riley rolled her eyes as the others stared at her when Rick ran through a protective suit to Glenn. "Ladies and gentlemen, meet the stubborn side of Rick Grimes."

Everyone else put on their protective suits and gloves while Rick and Morales ran out to get a walker from the alley. Rick had a hatchet in his hands and was about to gut the walker before he stopped himself. He got down to this knees, took of his glove and mask, and took the walker's wallet out of his pocket and opened it up.

"Wayne Dunlap." Rick says, checking the I.D. "Georgia license. Born in 1979. He had $28 in his pocket when he died and a picture of a pretty girl. 'With love, from Rachel'. He used to be like us. Worrying about bills or the rent or the superbowl. When I get to my family, I'm gonna tell them about Wayne."

Rick then passed the I.D. to his sister, and she inspected it. She remembered Wayne. She taught his young twin daughters since they both went to the school. The twins were a grade above Carl and Katie but her daughter was really good friends with the two. After looking at the I.D., she passed it on to Glenn.

"I taught his two twin girls. They were good friends with Katie." Riley decided to add.

"One more thing." Glenn added, after reading Wayne's I.D. "He was an organ donor."

After a moment of silence, Rick placed his mask and gloves back on. He then swung the axe into Wayne, causing everyone around him to groan in disgust.

"Oh God." Riley whispered, hiding her face in Andrea's shoulder, who covered her eyes, not wanting to see either.

"Madre de Dios!" Morales cried in Spanish.

"Oh God."

Rick continued to smash Wayne with the axe as everyone continued to groan in disgust. Rick then passed the axe and mask to Morales. "Keep chopping."

"I am so gonna hurl." Glenn groaned, hands on his knees.

"Later." Rick said as Morales continued to chop. "Everybody got gloves?"

"Remember, don't get any on your skin or in your eyes." Riley reminded them.

Everyone crouched down and took a handful of guts in there hands, then smeared it on Glenn and Rick. Glenn kept crying out in disgust.

"Oh, jeez. This is bad. This is very, very bad."

"Think about something else." Rick tried to make him feel better. "Puppies and kittens."

"Dead puppies and kittens." T-Dog added.

Glenn then turned around and vomited all over the floor as everyone stared at T-Dog.

"That is just evil." Andrea said to him.

Riley glared at him. "What is wrong with you?"

"Next time," Jacqui said from next to Rick, "let the cracker beat his ass."

"I'm sorry, yo." T-Dog apologized.

Glenn groaned, "You suck."

"Do we smell like them?" Rick questioned.

Riley nodded, "Oh, yeah."

"Glenn. Just in case." Andrea called and gave him her gun.

"If we make it back, be ready." Rick instructed.

"What about Merle Dixon?" T-Dog asked.

Rick took out his keys to the handcuffs and tossed them to T-Dog. "Give me the axe. We need more guts."
