The Road to Atlanta.

The Good the Bad & the Hungry.

To Lori’s surprise, the school were rather busy. Mother’s quickly bustling inside and out to drop off their children. For 8am in the morning, it was already scorching hot. The sun reflected in the windscreen of the jeep, warming the car to an unbearable heat. Lori blew her fringe up to try and cool herself before turning off the ignition and opening the door. Carl’s little hands scrambled at the door handle before hopping out onto the gravel. He slammed the door with a loud bang, attracting the attention of a few parents in the distance. After a warning look from Lori, Carl blinked in the sun and looked around blankly. ‘’Mom, where’s Charlie? ‘’

Lori swallowed. ‘’Sorry honey, Paula told me he’s sick today. And his dad is too. There must be a virus going round or something. Hope we don’t catch it! A cold in the summer is the last thing we want, eh?’’ She ruffled Carl’s hair and he almost grinned. ‘’C’mon kiddo, let’s get you inside.’’

As they walked hand in hand up the school driveway towards the main entrance, Lori frowned in confusion at the sudden crowd around the front doors of the school. Carl had the exact same look as his mother and he suddenly piped up.

‘’Mom, what’s happening?’’

Lori gulped for a second clearing her throat and said wistfully ‘’I don’t know honey…but we’ll find out okay?’’

As the pair approached the doors the cries of help became more clear, which unnerved Lori to the bone. She clenched Carl’s little hand in hers and tapped the first person she saw on the shoulder. It was James, a dad she’d seen around often. He had a little boy that Carl sometimes played with so she knew Lori could trust in his word. ‘’Hey…sorry but what’s going on here?’’ Lori’s voice got louder and louder as the panicked voices became more overwhelming. Carl began to shake and held his mother’s hand tight, latching onto her thigh like a little limpet.

‘’Oh hey Lori.’’ James said in an out of breath, frantic tone. ‘’Tony, you know Tony?’’

‘’Yeah the guy that has Elise the little girl. Yeah I know him, what of it?’’ Lori bit her lip nervously, her eyes flickering to the crowd. She couldn’t see anything but hundreds of parents crowding round to figure out what was happening. James cleared his throat and tried to talk over the desperate pleads.

‘’Well he just collapsed. He started convulsing all over the curb, being sick and everything. Poor little Elise crying at her dad on the floor. Then he just stopped….he stopped moving! He’s not breathing and I fear the worst. We’ve got the school medical staff on him now and an ambulance has been called.’’

Lori clasped her hand on her forehead and looked down at limpet Carl, who started crying into her jeans. She thanked the Dad and bend down and took his hands in hers and exhaled. ‘’Carl stop crying everything’s gonna’ be okay alright honey? ‘’ Carl nodded and Lori wiped away his tears. ‘’Tony’s gonna’ be just f-‘’

Before Lori could even finish her sentence an agonizing scream of a woman ripped through the air, cutting into it like a knife. Lori’s head whipped towards the sounds which were followed by more terrifying screams and people stumbling to get away. Lori instantly grabbed Carl and held him close to her to keep him from getting trampled on. She was so confused. Why is everyone screaming and fleeing? As the crowd began to rapidly disperse, the air was filled with sounds of crying screaming children, parents and the gurgling of a woman.

Suddenly looking through a gap through peoples legs, Lori yelled out in shock at what she saw. Tony was there! Alive! But something was wrong, so wrong. He had no colour to his eyes, the fever gone. There he was hunched over the body of the school nurse who were twitching in silence as the light left her eyes. Lori saw it. She saw how he tore into her stomach, ripping it open and delving his face right into the gore. He made grotesque sounds of gnashing and gargling as he choked himself on the insides of the school nurse. She was pretty much dead already. Lori were so shocked that she’d let go of Carl and when she looked back at him, he was stood there in a motionless state watching. She screamed and grabbed Carl’s face, twisting it towards her before grabbing his hand and running away like the others. Carl didn’t make any noise in all the commotion. He just stared motionlessly into the distance as he streaked towards the jeep with his mother.

Lori fumbled for the keys out of her pocket and shoved it into the car door lock. She ripped open the doors of the jeep and pushed Carl inside, slamming the door behind him. Just as she was about to dive into the driver’s seat, James edged behind her catiously. ‘’Sorry Lori but I need your car…’’

Slowly, Lori looked up towards him with a confused look on her face. But at the same time, there was a look of defiance in her eyes. ‘’Oh you want the car, James? You can take it, but you gotta’ go through me first. And I’ll be damned if I let you take this from me without a fight.’’

James hesitated for a second before looking down at the ground like a scolded child. He sighed. ‘’I’m sorry Lori… I think I just had a moment in all the confusion…I- ‘’ Suddenly, a derranged woman swiped a hard scratch on his shoulder, and he yelled out loud before swinging round to punch his attacker. Seeing it was a woman he hesitated and suddenly, the woman leered in and bit down hard on his face. Lori screamed as James was pulled to the ground, and she slammed the car door viciously before revving up the jeep. Lori didn’t even look at James squirming on the floor as she screeched down the driveway, dodging sprinting parents and children on the way.
